Hi, I am fairly new to this site and wanted to ask some questions. My doctor has me on 10/325 norco's every 4 hours for chronic back pain. I have been on the norco's for 6 months. At my last visit yesterday my doc asked me if i find myself running short? I then told him hat i have to take 1 and a half about every 2 and a half hours because the med wears off. Well he then asked me if i wanted to try a fentanyl patch or go on oxycontin 10mgs. I then told him that i once had patch to quit smoking and it broke me out real bad and he let me choose what i wanted, so i said the oxycontin. Now that i got it filled today, I am scared to death to take it and i really don't know why. I still am prescribed my 180 ct norco's plus 50 oxycontin for breakthru pain. How is the oxy compared to the norco. Norco 10/325 and oxy is 10 mg's. I guess i am so used to taking my norco's that i am afraid of new meds because i don't know if it will mke me sick or what. My doc said it could at first. Can anyone shed some light on this for me. How much stronger is the oxy opposed to my norco's? I even asked my pharmacist and he just acted like " oh you'll be okay", it's not very much strong than what you take now. I guess i should trust my phar but i have some reservatons. Thanks for all of your help!
did it make you sick when you started the oxy's. My next appt my dr wants me to decide which med i want. I hate taking 325 mg's of tylenol 6 to 7 times a day though.
It did create some naseau in the beginning, but it was bearable and over it in a week. I would totally try to cut back on the apap too. I would see how it works out, every person is different. I can honestly say the therapy plan I was on, Oxtcontin base med with the Percocet for breakthrough was great for me. You could significantly reduce the tylenol intake by finding the right dose of Oxycontin with your doctor. Many people do the Oxycotnin 3 x a day, as it only provides 8 hours of relief. Good luck!!
Just wanted to know how it is going to make me feel, I am like a big chicken when it comes to new meds or needles LOL. Yeah the apap can't be good for 6 to 7 x's a day. Thanks again. I guess i shall begin in the morning. I appreciate your help. Oh on my bottle it says oxycodone ER 10 mg take one tablet by mouth twice a day. will or should it last 12 hours?
good luck, it should be fine.
6 norco's isnt all that much tylenol unless you have decreased liver function or liver damage. at 6x day it works out to be 1950mg which is slightly lower than taking 4 tylenol in a day
But i would rather ave relief alot longer than 2and a half hours. Just taking two oxy's twice a day just seems more logical to me. I still have my 180 ct of norco per month and the 50 oxy. No my liver tests have come back fine. Thanks.
Don't be concerned with the oxy, 10 mg twice a day is like taking 4 percocet a day. That's not much at all. At first you should have 12 hr. relief from pill. As you build tolerance you may need three a day as they really only last 8 hrs once you build a tolerance.
You have made me feel more relaxed. I never thought i would be taking oxycontin but i am. Only one thing, it makes me so tired. I would rather take something like roxicodone instead. I read that the roxi won't make you tired. Anyone have any suggestions? Thanks again.
I dont know about that because their both the same active ingreadient (oxycodone) except the roxi would be instant realease while oxycontin is extended realease. I take roxicodone 8 times a day. The first 2 or 3 Im sometimes hyper, maybee the coffee. But as the day unfolds I get alittle more tired/drowsy. Maybe if the norco isnt working as good, you could ask your doctor about trying instant release oxy with or without tylenol. How are the oxycontin working for you? Are you getting brand name or the generic?
Hope everyone has a nice day! (-:
I am taking oxycodone IR genric for oxycontin and 10 mg of hydrocodone 10/325. The oxy makes me so tired. I like the effect of being out of pain and not tired at all like the hydro 10/325. I don't know what it is about the oxy why i am so tired. Thanks for trying to help. My real name is Stevie, like the singer Stevie Nicks. I hope nobody thinks im a man. Anyway i called my doctor today and he said to stop the oxy if it makes you too tired and we will discuss something better for you. My doctor is real easy going and is always willing to try something else if one does not work, Do you think roxicodone is more apt to make me not so sluggish and tired? Thanks Deanna
Oxycodone IR is not a generic for oxycontin. Oxycodone IR -the IR means instant release. Oxycontin is an ER-extended release med. ER meds are baseline pain med and IR are for breakthru. I was at one time on Oxycontin, it did not help. I was put on Avinza (morphine) a once a day med. It changed my life!!It was the first time i had pain relief. Maybe your oxycodone with your breakthru is too much.I would give it a week or so if it was me. Just my experience. For alot people Oxycontin really helps. I wish at the time i was on oc my dr would have upped my doses or given me 3-4 a day to really give oc a good try. But i was on oc 6 months before going to Avinza. Take care, htmom
Im a carolina girl also
Sorry for the post above, my mistake. Honey i'm not from north carolina. I am from California. When i was typing my user name i put stevenc. which is probably why you thought my name was steve in nc. Anyway I then noticed that i did not put the i in it and instead accidently typed a n. It is supposed to mean Stevie from Ca. I need to correct it but don't know how. anyway sorry again for the generic mistake. Stevie
oxycotin should ve of been the base but the way he wrote the rxs it clearly shows they re for nightly break-thru, in regards to 1650 mgs of apap a day, i just got off apap combination rxs an they poison body at any level, Paul Harvey said that more americans over dose every Sunday morning trying to cure a hangover, they grab 2 tynenol an a beer an due irrepairable harm to their livers as the combination of alcohol an apap, very bad mixture

The oxycontin should be effective and it lasts much longer than the Norco. I have been on Oxycontin for almost two years now, with Percocet 5/325 for breakthough pain. It has been my experience that the Oxycontin is very effective when prescribed 3 times a day, or every 8 hours. I started out 20mg twice a day and within two weeks I told my doctor that it was not lasting 12 hours as intended, so he increased it to 1 20mg every 8 hours. I started at 20mg twice a day, went to 3 times a day, then increased to 40mg three times a day over the year and half I was using it as part of my therapy. I was also taking Percocet, it varied day to day, but I received 60 pills per month. This was all up until my surgery this past summer.
It seems odd that the oxycontin is prescribed for breakthough and the Norco is your base med, it is usually the other way around, from my experience and from what I have read here. I am sure it is a little nerve-racking to have to start a new medicine, but the relief it will bring to your pain, will hopefully calm you. It has allowed me to live my life a little more comfortably and has works wonders for me.
I had a soinal fusion L5 - S1 6 months ago and I have tapered down the oxycontin and scheduled to be off it next month. The surgery was a great success and I am back to physical activities and pain is just about gone. I am down from 120mg of oxycontin and 10mg of Percocet a day to now 20 mg Oxycontin (1 10mg in the am and 1 10mg at night)with 2 Percocet 5/325's a day, it has taken a while but it has worked. Swimming has done wonders too!! Soon to be med free. I wish you the best!
