I take 10mg Methadone 3 times a day and have for bout 3 years. I've always had a problem with breakthru pain and so has my doctor though our problems are different. I have severe at times breakthru and my docotr likes to deny the possibility of it. Hydro has always worked well for me but now i need to take atleast 30mg to get any relief. 50mg is more on point or 30mg Oxy IR{I've never taken oxy ER} Also, the 30mg methadone daily has slowly been working less well for All-the-time pain.

Any advice? First hand experiences? Especially interestded in ideas not involving Oxy

advice on switching from methadone to alternative

hello, i do not know your medical reasons for taking pain meds, i assume you go to pain management? i have been going for about 5 years now. i also take methadone, 6 10mg a day, and 4 hydro 10mg for breakthrough, i find it to be the best thing out there for my situation. if you are going to pain management, that is why you go, to find a happy medium with meds that will help your pain the best. methadone last longer than any other pain med, if  i take mine today and run out, it will be in my system for about 32 hours until i can get more, but i make sure i don't RUN out! you should ask your doctor to up your dossage, that is what they are supposed to do, providing your current injuries require more meds. i can't have surgery, i will be on medicine the rest of my life, i am 48, and that x*#&s! i don't sleep, i haven't been in a bed to sleep in 4 years! i am currently in a reclining chair, back and forth from sitting on the couch! pain is my worst enemy! the meds just sometimes dull the pain, but make it tolleralbe to live! i was in therapy for about 2 years until i said everything that could be said! i can't even have physical therapy because i canot do any weight bearing exercises! i think with your dose of methadone incresased with the right amount of break through you will find it to be a lot better. i also take neurontin and xanax.  i find that for my pain when i tried the oxy, if i had none the next day i was a hurting SOB!!!!!!!! i will never experience that again! also, do you take the generic methadone or the real ones? there is a difference. well enough about me. eagerly awaiting to hear from you, while my body will let me sit here! take care and god bless kurtwood!   P.S.---- my doctors say that you do not ever want to go through withdraws off methadone, they say it is worse than any other meds out there! i know of people that tried getting off them and had to go to the hospital in an ambulance! i remember what it was like to run out of hydro in the old days, i don't ever want to experience anything like that again! my body could not take any further pain, it would probably kill me!!!!! i can't take morphine products, i am allergic to morphine, that is probably why the methadone works so well for me.

I personally dont think

I personally dont think oxycontin is the answer to everything. Have you heard of MS Contin? When I first started going to pain management my doctor tried putting me 5mg methadone every 8 hours and he also prescribed me norco 10/325 every 6 hours as needed. I was still staring at the clock waiting for that sixth hour to come around because I was still in a good amount of pain. Well when I came back for the follow up visit he asked me how I was doing, I had a bunch of side effects from the methadone, and I told him I was taking 4 norcos a day. He11, I would have taken more if the bottle let me, because the pain was still pretty bad. He tells me I am taking too many norco, which confuses me because hes the one that wrote the script for the norco and I took at as directed. Well he asked me what I want to be on because there isnt too many options for pain relief when you dont have health insurance.

He decided to put me on MS Contin 30mg every 8 hours and I hardly take norco anymore. I might take 2 in a day for break thru pain. Ask your doctor about MS Contin, or maybe upping your dose of methadone. I personally didnt get hardly any relief and it seemed like it was changing my personality along with some other side effects. If it works for you then maybe you just need a stronger dose. And if you are taking 50mg of hydro at a time you are not doing your body any good. First of all thats not how its suppose to be taken and they APAP with it can bring some serious health risks. Secondly, your doctor will think you are a drug seeker if you choose to take more than whats prescribed without consulting him or getting his approval first.

Some people on here think that sometimes when people quit getting the euphoric effect that the drug isnt doing its job anymore. I dont know if this is the case with you. Personally when I take my meds I dont feel any different mentally but I do feel pain go away or slowly come back. I guess you will just have to discuss with your doctor alternatives methods to the methadone if he isnt going to up the dose. Ask him about Morphine Sulfate, its not quite oxycontin and it works really well with my pain. Let us know how things work out after you next appt.

its would seem hard to find any opiate

compatiable with the methadone, think about for just a second, the methadone would work against any opiate as this is the main purpose of methadone was to void any opiate to some degree, this was what I always was lead to beleive the purpose of methadone or suboxone purposes.

anyone else like to debate this

for cwk48

To the OP, sorry I'm heading off on a tangent.

It concerned me about how you stated you can't do any PT because you can't do any weight bearing moves.  Have you tried aquatic PT.  After my accident, I fell down stairs bouncing down half the flight on my lower back, I couldn't stand for anything much more than light clothing to touch my lumbar area of my back.  I could barely walk and couldn't do any type of movements on the table in physical therapy--the heating pad was too heavy and ice made me shriek in pain.  My PM doctor sent me to the pool.  Because we are almost weightless in the pool I was able to walk and pretend to ride a bicycle.  I was unable to progress much further.  In fact my PT assistant said I never graduated from kindergarten in the pool.  Because any movement in the water is completely NON weight bearing, maybe this could help you.  I don't know what your insurance status is, but medicare/caid covers it.  In fact as long as you have any insurance you could afford it.  I'm sorry, but if you are self-pay it is just as expensive as the other type of PT.  It isn't always easy to find PT centers that have the pool, but with an open mind you could talk to your PM or PCP about it as an option.

I'm a poor example of a positive outcome, but what I was able to do--it made me feel better.  I hope you don't take this as prying into your business.  I've only meant this with the best intentions.

I believe anytime you exercise in the pool , you are working about every muscle in your body, no matter of the limitations, a heated pool such as a natural warm springs would be even better.

while Deer hunting in Bath county Virginia there was a natural warm springs they had bathhouses for both genders, hunters would bathe in the spillway to prevent soap from contaiminating the large pool it was like 60 feet in diameter an 8 feet deep, a half hour in that pool did wonders, 1 time I stayed in for a hour an the next morning I was extremely sore, the manager the nite before told me that the time limit was 30 minutes which I did nt know he told me that the minerals in the water adsorbed into the body , that morning I believed him

I was told that the bathhouses were shut down but i believe that they will open back up, if not already, they belonged to the warm springs hotel an were a big draw for medical patients

Thank You

Thanks for the reply and sorry i couldn't reply sooner.

Not on meds cos of injury. It's due to abdominal pain due to IBD(irritable bowel disiease) I'm not in PM anymore(started with PM at first, 3yrs ago) my primary knows my financial situation so doesn't won't me to pay all that$$ for a PM so he prescribes...mind you not liberrally in the slightest.

Also, i know not seek 'euphoria' when aiming for relief. Just take enough to Dull it All
