I know I sound like a pest but if anyone had this cortisone shot could you please give me some idea of what to expect. I mean its in my spine and I have decided that I am going to request a more accurate mri to be done. It doesnt hurt to wait a few xtra weeks considering they are going to try the shot to see if that is actually it. my husband feels that the shot just coats the problem and he wants me to find out whats wrong. any info would be appreciated...
the shots do help me but I refuse to have anymore around my spinal cord due to this http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Arachnoiditis
If at any time the dr has a problem placing the needle tell them to stop/I wish I would have. Good Luck.
I am not a Dr. I just play one on TV.
I do know here in England that these cortisone shots are used on a regular basis during football matches. For instance , a footballer hurts his ankle badly, he is given a shot at half time to get him through the game . A lot of young sportsmen use these shots on a regular basis and end up having to retire in their mid twenties ,because there is so much at stake ££££££££, as they take the shots instead of addressing the prob which leads to irreversable damage. thanks

A cortisone shot does not simply mask the problem like narcotics do. The thought is that cortisone in the epidural space around the spine decreases inflammation. When the inflammation subsides, the pain decreases or resolves. It may take several injections over a four to six month period of time to get good results. Sometimes an injection is theraputic as well as diagnostic. For example if you inject lidocaine (a local anesthetic) and cortisone into a certain joint and the pain goes away, then you have acurately located the source of the pain to that joint.
