Today my back hurts so much I had to stay home from work. I am currently taking Opana ir 10mg four times a day and Neurontin 600mg three times a day. I woke up and my lower back and down my left leg was in such bad pain today. I took a dose of Opana and the pain continued. So I am relaxing today hoping the pain will calm down. Any advice. I also put on of those self heating pads. Thanks in advance. I hope everyone is having a good day. :)
Have you tried a hot bath? How about gentle stretching? When my lower back hurts alot I tend to lie down on the floor and try very very gentle yoga stretches. I take a therapeutic "yen" yoga class once a week, when I can. Half of the class is savasana (corpse pose-lying down) with a guided meditation. How about walking around the block? Sometimes my back gets a little better just from getting up and walking. Now, overdoing it leaves me worse off. Right now, on a good day I walk 26-28 minutes. On a bad day about 5. I know these aren't pharmalogical suggestions but they're born of my trial & error. Feel better!

what helps me the most as far as NSAID's goes for my back is aleve(naproxen) in my lumbar and thoracic spine, and laying down in a neutral position for your hamstrings. lay on your back on the most comfortable thing for you, with your feet flat on the surface and your knees bent so as to not put any stress on your lower back. your hamstrings attach above around your hip towards your stomach, so when your legs are straight if you have tight hamstrings, this will torque your pelvis down and can cause more pain. i hope that makes sense... pm me if you have questions about that... im not the most descriptive person ever.
best of luck!
Thanks for all the wonderful advice. I feel a lot better today. I am getting out my yoga mat right now and going to do some light stretching. And breathing exercises. I appreciate all of you as always. How is everyone?
thanks for asking/ hope you are well also
Great to hear you are feeling better! I dont know what type of stretchs yoga entails, but I know of some stretchs I learned from my physical therapist that are great for the back. One is the butterfly stretch; lay down on your back, bring your legs up towards your abdomen bottoms of your feet touching and let your legs fall to the sides. Stretch out as much as you can, but it helps when someone can stretch you, they can stretch you until you are tight, then back off, then stretch a little further etc etc. That stretch loosens up a muscle that runs through the hip area which when its tight it will pull your hips/spine forward, and out of place causing extra pain. Another one called the bridge, you lay on your back, bring your feet up knees point up in the air, feet close together do gentle lifts of your body upward. Im instructed to do two sets of 10 lifts twice with a 30 sec rest in between sets. Seems to really help losen things up. You might know these already, I know you are feeling better, but they might come in handy in the future.
Will try these stretches :)
No problem, good luck!
I recomend that You get a pair of Dr. Scholls foam shoe inserts, they make a huge difference in preventing back pain, the foam are the best, the gel type too stiff, the inserts act as a shock asborber when walking esp. on hard surfaces as concrete or pavement.
Woodstock, hope You ll still feeling better
Mr Brandman, I learned those in yoga! My physical therapist is also a yoga teacher. There's a lot of crossover there.
That is really cool! Do you find that they help you? They help me with my back pain and help to relieve the symptoms of my sciatica a little bit.
Woody, good suggestion. I am partial to skater shoes like DC, Etnies, Globe, Osiris etc,
but when I wear athletic shoes made for running I notice a significant differnce in the strain on my body and back. I have used the inserts in my skater shoes and it gives them more of an arch like the athletic shoes. I feel like I am more alligned properly, and pressure is relieved.
They do help me. I've had 3 discs removed in my neck and I'm fused from c4 to c7, so i don't have great range of motion in my neck. I have to be careful to leave my shoulder blades on the floor during bridge - it's actually modified bridge for me. It really helps pain & tightness in the lower back. Butterfly is good too. I also do one where I lie down on the floor and put my legs straight up the wall. Then I bend my knees and put my feet flat on the wall. (my bottom is pretty much against the wall on the floor). Leaving my head and neck relaxed, and shoulder blades on the floor, I press into my feet on the wall and lift up my bottom and low back. I do it really slowly, picking up my back one vertebrae at a time starting at my sacrum. It feels great to slowly roll up and down. That also helps tightness on the thoracic spine. Happy stretching everybody!

I have never had any relief w/ opana however if you do that's great. is it sciatica? kinda need more info, maybe ask your doc for an NSAID i.e naproxen mobic whatever
