I am currently having extreme discomfort from external hemmorhoids.  Some days they are just uncomfortable but others it is very painful.  Certain things like going to the bathroom and cleaning ones self is extremly painful.  I am going to see a colon/rectal doctor on the 20th to get this taken care of.  I currently take tramadol for shoulder discomfort from surgery about 3 months ago.  Tramadol doesnt help the pain at all caused by the hemorrhoids.  I am going to need a stronger painkiller to help ease the pain, but I am concerned with constipation causing even more problems.  I am not sure what the doctor will prescribe me for pain but what do you guys think he or she will say regarding pain control and constipation affecting my hemorrhoids.

Tough subject for men maybe

Tough subject for men maybe but most women who have had children have delt with this. Take mira lax or milk of magesia to get over the initial blockage (so to speak). Then take a OTC stool softener twice daily, and drink a ton of water. This should help to keep your stools soft which will keep the hemmeroids as pain free as possible. As for easing the pain from the actual roids, there are many OTC creams, but what I found the most helpful was regular black tea bags (lipton kind) wet them and keep them pressed against your anus for as long as you can up to an hour. You can do this as many times a day as possible, as well as alternating with sitz baths (epsom salt) and ice packs help too. I don't know why the tea bags helped but Grandma said they would and they did. At least for me that is. Good luck, I know your pain and it's about as much fun as any other kinda of pain, just harder to talk about.

hemmorrhoid pain

Hi, I too am a mom and from being pregnant i think i can help you too. Try straight witch hazel or tucks pads and let the pads on your anus for as long as they dry out, then repeat throughout the day. I guarantee you within 1 to 2 days  they will have shrunk back to normal. Try it, you will thank me. Cinzee1

Thanks for the comments.  I

Thanks for the comments.  I have tried epsom salts, hydrocortizne cream (prescription), and prescription suppositories.  They always come back.  I researched the topic and it said that one should not use the hydrocortizone cream for more than 2 weeks at a time becuase it will start to thin the membrane.  I am tired of them coming back so I am going to a colon/rectal surgen who will probably do rubber band lidigation.  I am not sure if this procedure is painful but I heard it is much better then invasive hemorrhoid surgery.  Mine are off and on but when they are on they are extremely painful.  As long as they are internal there are not too bad.  They itch and are uncomfortable but not unbearable.  However, when they start protruding they are very painful.  I want to take pain medication for the pain but i'm worried that it will constipate me which would make the hemorrhoids worse.  Maybe the doctor will prescribe me laxatives along with painkillers to take care of this problem?

hey im not embaressed to

hey im not embaressed to chime in on this, i know when i've been on opiates that it causes some serious constipation, which would result in some... errrr not-so-soft poop. A mom's advice of stool softners is a great idea (which I think doctors should warn you that opiates will constipate you and to get a stool softener), then some generic version of Preperation H works well too. Also swapping toilet paper for baby wipes isn't a bad idea.

Mira lax

The great thing about mira lax is that it doesn't cause the cramping that things like ex lax causes. Say you treat the initial constipation (with something like ex lax or an enema) and then go to daily stool softners, and continue to have constipation then stool softners alone will not help you. No one wants to take ex lax daily, nor is it safe to do so, but mira lax is safe to take daily and will keep you under control with out the extra pain of cramping. I was delighted when the made it OTC, because my daughter has a condition called hirschprungs where the nerve endings don't work down there so she has to use this daily. Then, I went to buy it and found out my co-pay was less than the OTC priceFrownLOL anyways, GREAT product (in my opinion only of course)

Depends on your doctor.....

But, in my experience they have always told me to stay away from any narcotic pain medication due to the fact that they can cause constipation which will irritate "your bottom".  There are many OTC medications for your problem and they do work wonders.  If you are going to have any type of procedure, then I would think that your doctor would make sure that you are comfortable after the procedure.  I wish you luck and hope you are pain free soon.  All of the posts so far have offered excellent advice.

Best Of Luck!!!!!

Thanks for your reply.  In

Thanks for your reply.  In case you didnt read the rest of the post, I have tried every over the counter "bottom" cream there is.  I have used preparation H, prescription hydrocortizone cream, prescription suppositories, epsom salt baths just to name a few.  I know I need a procedure done, but until then I would like to be comfortable you know.  I'm not sure if when I go in to see him that on that same day he will perform the rubber band lidigation but I hope so.  If not he has to prescribe me something for the pain bc i'm fed up with these things.

Sorry if you thought......

I was insensitive to your problem.  I know how painful they can be.  Be honest with your doctor and let him/her know how much pain you are in.  Explain to him/her that you have tried every OTC cream and you don't get the relief you need.  I spoke to my brother and he said that his doctor did give him some pain medication to get him through until his surgery and then they gave him some stronger pain medication after the procedure.  Do you have a primary care physician who would be willing to prescribe something for you until you see the specialist?  Have you seen this specialist before?  If so, maybe he/she would be willing to call something in for you or have you come by his/her office to pick up a prescription.  It's worth a try to get some relief.   I wish you all the best and hope that your surgery goes well!  Again, I am so sorry if you thought I was being insensitive to your pain.  Please keep us updated.

If it was me i would ask for

If it was me i would ask for something topical for the roid pain.  As you have been told pain meds are the worst for causing poop to be hard. Try not to strain during a bowelment. You are young to be having these sort of problems. If you have to take a bowel preparation before the procedure, ask for something for the pain for sure!!! Take care, htmom
