My dad has been prescribed Percocet after a recent surgery. They help him quite a bit, but they tend to upset his stomach quite badly. He tries to get by without using them, but when the pain is very bad- usually at night- he has to take one in order to sleep. What would you do in order to prevent stomach upset from taking opiates? I've never had problems like that with those sorts of medication, so I don't really know what to tell him. It's not the greatest situation for him, because it's either take the Percocet and feel like crud, or don't take the Percocet and hurt too much to sleep or move around. You know? I told him to ask his doctor to maybe give him something different, but he won't have the chance to see his doctor for a few weeks, so he'll have to stick with the Percocet for now. If anyone has some advice, I'd appreciate it.
the pamplet that comes with his medication, some medicine says take with food or with a minimum of 8 ounces of water, if taken on a empty stomach a pill such as asprin or other pain medication it can simply ly still an irrate the stomach lining.
I had a extremely bad bout once with ultram an swore I never take another.

Thanks guys.
I asked Dad where the info sheet he should have gotten with the Percs went to, but he doesn't know where he put it. He misplaces stuff all the time- we're both scatterbrains, haha- and that's why he was asking me about it.
I sent him an email about what you mentioned- the Pepto, phenergan, and making sure he has a full stomach. He almost never takes medication of any type- he's very healthy and even when he's had injuries from sports he usually just opts for the RICE treatment (rest, ice, compression, elevation) and doesn't even take Tylenol. Could be why he's having an issue with these, since they're quite strong.
Here's hoping this'll help with his stomach troubles. Thanks again!
When I was taking Oxyfast(liquid oxycodone), I would eat applesauce or pudding. Htmom
with nausea. Eat something bland..Crackers, jell-o, broth. Just don't eat a whole lot of it. Phenergan works well if you have it, as does Compazine for nausea. Even one of the OTC preparations of scopolamine--Dramamine (for motion sickness) will work, and it comes in a patch that you stick behind your ear. Benedryl(off-label) will work also, though it will make you drowsy. In fact, all of the medications I have listed will make you drowsy so be careful... Hope this helps...Ray

Phenergan is something a doctor may prescribe for this problem, meanwhile he could try taking it with food, or chase it down with some Pepto-Bismol.
