Hi all,
I'm brand new to the forum, in feb of 04 I had an orthoscopic triple open lung biopsy the surgeon severed t-4-t-9 of my peripheral nerves and I was diagnosed with thurasic peripheral neuropathy as well as a mild to moderate case of RSD. I have been prescribed 100mcgs fentanyl patches along with lortab10 for break through pain for 5yrs
My doctor started my transition to methadone 5mgs yesterday. My question is,is it normal to be sleepy all the time? Any info would be greatly apresiated.
Thanks in advance, eamderia

I just started methadone 5mg

I just started methadone 5mg every 8 hours for pain management. It gives mes me headaches and nausea. It does help with the pain though and the adverse effects are starting to not be as bad the more I take it. Yes it does make me sleepy. If I stare for longer than 5 seconds it seems my eyes get heavy and I want to go to sleep. I also take norco for break thru pain.

methadone

Are you still on the fentanyl patch along with taking methadone or did your doctor already take you off of the fentanyl?  To answer your question methadone can indeed make you drowsy.  Very drowsy.  Millertime said it well.  The drowsiness will subside in a couple of weeks.  May I ask why your doctor is switching you from fentanyl to methadone?  Fentanyl is more potent than methadone.  God luck.

Methadone drowsiness

Methadone therapy will indeed make you drowsy.  Even after I got used to the drowsiness, I found that my need for sleep overall increased about fifty percent over the past year.
