Please tell me why Doctors are not more sympathetic to migraines sufferers? I have had a migraine for seven straight weeks now and am so tired. I feel like shooting myself, but I have my family to consider! I wake up in the morning with one lasting all day and fo to bed every every evening with one. It's like friggin ground hogs day around here. I have no life. It seems I cry over the most asinine things lately! It has messed with my marriage, my relationships and the everyday of enjoying life itself. You go to a doc here in good ol' Tennessee and you can forget pain meds! I take my maxalt, Treximet ( Both 9 pills each month ) Amitriptyline & Topomax for prevention. I am so lost for words right now.. Any, any suggestions would be a huge help. however remember I am almost 40 years old and it's getting worse... Thanks for listening.. Kristi
Excederin Migrane or Fioricet/ Fiorinal also the Fioricet with codeine...
If all else fails, propofol is said to work wonders (off label).
P.S. If it's that severe, I hope you've had a CT, or other imaging studies to rule out intracranial hemorrhage. If you haven't already, I would advise visiting the local E.R.
I think doctors are suspicious of people who say they have migraines because a lot of doctor-shoppers use it as a way of trying to get painkillers. It's not hard to fake a migraine if you know how, I guess... you really need to be able to monitor them internally in order to know whether they're genuine or not.
I get them too. Ask your doctor about a type of medication called "triptan inhibitors." It's not a painkiller, it alters the flow of certain chemicals in your brain- I've found them to be quite effective (I used to use one called Zomig, a rapid melting sublingual tablet, and it would often quell a migraine within about 30 minutes or so, provided I took it early on.) Just be careful- you can't take them with MAOIs and a few other types of medication... talk it over with your doctor and he'll determine whether it's an appropriate option for you.
EDIT: Hm, you already take Maxalt... yeah, I would get some brain scans done, just to rule out anything dangerous.
Ask the doc about Imitrex injectables for one. Also how many of those Triptans do you take per month. Triximet (imitrex & naproxyn ((sp?))) is a new version of imitrex because the patent was running out and the company that developed imitrex wanted to make more money by combining it with another drug and patenting that. You can get addicted to triptans, or abortatives, if you take too many of them. Addicted in that when they aren't in your system it will trigger a migraine. Also using narcotics for migraines can be a slippery slope. In that doctors know they can cause rebound migraine headaches. Some docs know this and will not script them because of it. And it's funny how some doctors are totally unsympathetic. My girlfriend had two brainsurgeries, she has head pain everyday of her life. She went to this nuero who said she needed to get off of the percocet because it was causing her to have rebound headaches. Well that is fine and dandy if you are suffering from migraines, but she is not. That doctor told her that she just needed to love in pain. What utter and total f'ing bull doo doo. I should have known better about this quack nuero because I saw her as my nuero years ago when I was just getiing over my seizures. She wasn't about to give me narcotics for my head pain at the time. She is one of the only doctors I know that can't script schedule two, 2N, or schedule three, 3N, narcotics which is very strange. Most doctors cannot operate their practices without having the ability to prescribe percocet, a 2N, or vicodin/lortab/norco/T3-4(codeine), all 3N! Considering the only reason some people will ever visit a doctor. Crazy!!!
I feel you with the migraines, they have totally taken over my life in a bad way! I am also on Topamax as well as axert, ect.....None seem to work for me...At one point I was put on Stadol Nasal Spray, now years ago that did work but it would lay you out feeling like you were drunk! For me the only thing I do when I have a full blown migraine is go to the ER...I have been suffering from them for 20yrs, and because of the frequency of them, I have a very high tolerence to pain meds....The only thing that ever helps me is IV with fluids cuz I'm usually dehydrated from the puking, Dilaudid IV & Phenegran or Zofran....and sometimes I have to get several shots in my IV before it works due to my tolerence being so high....I wouldn't wish a migraine on my worst enemy....But it's not always a nice trip to the ER because sometimes they do act skeptical like ur just a drug seeker or something.....I hate that!
To WOODSTOCK: I am past the point of being able to work. I had to crawl under my desk because of the lighting, noise and people just walking around me. I have been to the er 3 times and apparently waited too long. I kept getting sick and they were pumping my full of phenergan! Toradal has no effect on me, I have several different kind of migraines, not just basilar. Thank you for the advise it is very appreciative!
I have had all the Cat Scans and MRI's you could think of and it's very irritating to be told we find nothing, you must have been pre-genetically exposed. Well no s***! My mom, her sis, my cuz and dad all have migraines. When I get my treximet filled I take those nine pills in 3 days because I know I will at least have some sort of peace for a little while. I will take anything for it ( If I have it lol ) except for oxycontin. Knowing me I might like it and that would be just another problem I can't deal with right now lol. Thanks again for your help... If you do hear or learn something new, please feel free to let me know. KQ
i know a lady that gets extreme migraines and the only thing that keeps her from a trip to the er which is a last resort, it is a nasal spray opiate cII, cant remember the name off hand. being in tennesee tho u may have a hard time getting an rx for it. i am sure one of us knows the name of it um um i got it it is called Stadol Ns. dont know if it is labeled for migraines but she says it works wonders for them. but like i said it is a scheduleII in my state so u may have a hard time getting rxd it in ur state. google it or find it on this site, sure its here somwhere and it comes in a nasal spray and acts very quickly.. hope that helps, take care.
Thats what I was talking about in my reply #5, Stadol Nasal Spray...I was rx'd it for migraines and it did work wonders...The only problem is the bottle only lasts for a short time and if you don't use it within 24hrs you lose 2 sprays because you have to prime the bottle...A lot of doctors don't like to prescribe it due to the addiction....But I am a severe migraine sufferer like urself and it is a last resort before the er
that is exactly what she told me, but she was rxd it because if she wasnt she would be in the er everytime she had a episode, or a cluster of migraines as she put it. but being the sate the poster is in he is going to have a hard time getting it rxd, or maybe not if he has an extensive history of this problem. they want u in the er sometimes just for the $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$.
Have you tried steroids or an injection of Reglan? Are you certain of the migraine diagnosis and seeing a neurologist or family medicine doctor with an interest in headaches?
...anywhere near any type of steroid. Ask most people who've tried them. Doctors pass them out like candy for cases in which they cannot confim diagnosis.
Reglan injection= E.R. Doctor's lawsuit avoidance strategy.
Holy cow nine Treximet in three days? That is quite extreme! I hope you do not do that too often. If you were taking that much all the time then you would certainly be giving yourself abortative rebounds. It's just your head gets use to the triptans in it all the time and when they aren't there then it sets off the trigger to get more. And it's not like triptans make you feel good.
Tell your doctor you want to try the imitrx injectables. It comes with this auto injector pen and is very easy to use.
I would seek out a pain management doctor on your own. Who cares about dependence when you live your life in pain everyday? Narcotics are what you need. Besides it is not like they are causing you the migraines now, so how can they keep them from you?
Can also ask for midrin. It's not a narcotic and actually works for a good chunk of folks who have migraines.

is it flourescent or the standard light bulb, I used to work in a office with long flourescent bulbs an the effects of insufficent light caused bad headaches that would not go away until they slept off, the pain would be directly in the front forehead.
Excedrin suppose to be the best OTC medication for headaches, but everyone that went to the ER, with migranes received Toradol.
oil of peppermint, gives some relief, just don t get too close to the eyes, it has a warming effect, rub on forehead an temples, hope you re not allergic.
