I was in an automoblie accident. A drunk driver hit me. My air bag came out and i do not know why i thought of it but i put my left hand up to block the air bag from hitting my face- so in turn ,it hit my hand and that resulted in a pretty nasty break - ladies & gentlemen.

I have never broken a bone or taken pain medication. i have a question about my medication

Hydroco/apap 10-325 MG or NORCO

i feel dizzy when i take it. How can i lesson the dizziness.  I don't want to be in pain but i also don't want to be dizzy---that ruins my day to say the least.

all your comments will be greatly appreciated

Because you have never taken

Because you have never taken pain medication bofore you are not tolerant, and dizziness is a common side effect.

You can try breaking a pill in half and taking only half at a time with food or milk, and if within a 1/2 hr to 45 minutes that does not help your pain, take the other half. Please do not exceed your recommended doseage.

I'm sorry about the accident, and more so your broken hand.I hope you heal quickly.. Smile

You could take some

You could take some Dramamine, its used to treat sea sickness (nausea, vomiting and dizziness), but since you're opioid naive, your Norco 10 may be too strong, you could try halving it.

Hope this helps

Take less.  People often are

Take less.  People often are prescribed a bit more than they actually need strength wise to eliminate most of the pain.  If a whole norco pill makes you feel ill or dizzy, try breaking it in half and only taking half of it.  It may be your body only needs 5 mg rather than all 10.

The other suggestion is to take it with food.  That eliminates many of the negative side effects people have from taking hydrocodone.

I've never broken a bone,but

I've never broken a bone, but the surgeons broke many for me-and I've been in PT more times than I care to even think about.. I'm in PT now as a matter of fact, but for another reason.

I wasn't aware of your nausea,I thought that you only had the dizziness, but taking only half a pill w/food or milk might help with the nausea as well as the dizziness.Like I said earlier though,if half a pill doesn't help your pain within 45 minutes you could take the other half.

How long ago was the break? If your pain is moderate to severe, waiting for pain medication to work might not be an option and taking half a pill might not be a good solution for you.If this is the case you might want to call your Dr and tell him/or her that you are feeling these symptoms and ask if there is anything that you can take for the nausea/dizziness.My Dr Rx'ed me PHENERGAN a couple of years ago whenever I was first prescribed narcotics for chronic pain.

..Or you could call your pharmacist and ask if there are any OTC options that might be right for you.. because they know all of the meds that you take and any reactions you might have.

I have been on pain meds......................

for years and every now and then my medication will "turn on me" for lack of a better phrase. Dizziness, nausea the works. I lie down with a wet cold washcloth in a dark or dimly lit room and keep my head still and that works for me. Good luck with the break. I'm glad you weren't hurt worse. Drunk drivers are out and out criminals!!! I hope the person who hit you gets the maximum. Have a great day!!!   Greg

Been there done that with the

Been there done that with the broken bone! Back around December of 2004 I woke up in the middle of the night to go to the bathroom...I was half asleep so I tripped and fell over a little slab of marble that's on the floor right in the doorway. Anyway I put my arms out to break my fall and I ended up breaking my left wrist in two places....the pain that I felt took my breath away. My whole left wrist started swelling and bruising...went to the hospital and the x-rays showed fractures in two places...I had a cast for 6 weeks(the worst part was how itchy it got)! Be careful in the shower...I had to wear a plastic bag over my cast so it wouldn't get wet...that was annoying.

As far as PT goes...I had physical therapy back in 2003 for a torn ligament in my knee(luckily I evaded surgery)..I had it three times a week for three weeks, actually I had physical and aquatic therapy for my knee(I would go do exercises in a pool which helped the stiffness and pain immensely). After the aquatic therapy in the pool I would go on a stationary bike and a leg press. After that I would work with a physical therapist who would do various stretches and lifts with my bummed leg and then he would do a massage and ultrasound with biofreeze. It was great for that type of injury...certainly helped with my pain and with the stiffness of not really using it for a few weeks.

As for the hydrocodone goes...when I was opioid naive and would take vicodin ES 7.5/750 for a root canal or something it used to make me sick to my stomach and dizzy as well. Take your medication with food and like the others said half the pill...5mgs of hydrocodone is a therapeutic dose for some people and since you are opioid naive 5mgs of hydrocodone is all you may need. Depending on how long you are taking the pain meds for usually those side effects will go away with time...I imagine you won't be taking it for so long, but hopefully your body will get used to the medication within a week or so.

I wish you well and a speedy recovery!

OMG, Sprinks that sounds

OMG, Sprinks that sounds painful!  Holy cow!

We saw a patient a few weeks ago, and while I was taking her history, I asked if she had ever had surgery before.  And she told me that a few years ago, she did the same thing as you, tripped and tried to stop her fall and ended up, not just fracturing her wrist, but suffered an incomplete......oh poo!  what was the word, not decapitation..... um... drat, I hate brain $&&*&!  But anyway her hand was almost totally... AMPUTATED! That's the word!  She was a little old lady, so I'm sure her bones were brittle, but other than some skin still holding her hand on, she just about amputated her hand when she fell on it.  Isn't that horrible?  I've never even heard of such a thing before.

I was in a MVA many years ago, lola and fractured most of my right ribs and also my hip in three places.  Obviously you can't put a cast on any of those bones, but I did have to have PT for the hip fracture, almost had to learn to walk again, since I couldn't bear any weight for quite some time.  I remember it was quite painful, esp when I was laying in bed and they would put an ankle weight on my right leg, which I was supposed to lift off of the bed to strengthen that hip.  How's your face?  Did you do any damage to your face?  I've heard that those airbags can be pretty devastating when they explode.

Sorry about your accident

Hi SuperLola25,

Sorry to hear about your accident.

Everyone else has covered pretty much everything.   I just want to mention that you really want to try to be on as little of this medication as you can for as short a period of time as you can as it can become habit-forming.   Many people end up with long-term problems as a result.

I also agree that if you are opiate-naiive, you will be a little dizzy for a day or two but it will go away by itself.   Be careful operating machinery or doing anything that requires fast reaction, too.

You may be able to get away with half a Norco plus one Tylenol.    Don't drink with this med, though.

Good luck and I hope you feel better soon.

Sorry...must make a

Sorry...must make a correction to my post...I had PT for six weeks not three weeks...and Bmom...the pain was absolutely excruciating...the chronic pain I suffer with I can deal with...it's those surprise traumas where acute pain comes into play that I cannot deal with. I woke my mother up in the middle of the night because of the sound that came out of me from the pain...I was opioid naive at the time and the doctor gave me some form of hydrocodone 10mg with APAP(can't remember if it was vicodin or lortab or what have you)...and it made me sick for a while....also Bmom are you thinking of a compound fracture? that is where the bone is pretty much sticking completely out of place...almost(or maybe it is completely) out of the skin?
