Hello to all! I stumbled across here a while ago & saw the support that you all have for each other, and found it amazing! I'm looking for some insight into other options to control my symptoms and was hoping that some of you have some ideas, because I know you're in the same boat, concerning pain management. Here's my story, and forgive me in advance for the length!
I'm 23 years old and have been diagnosed with PCOS (Poly Cystic Ovarian Syndrome, for those who may be unfamiliar), endometriosis, loads of scar tissue in that area, and about a year ago was diagnosed with Fibromyalgia. My ovarian troubles began a few years ago, and my first OB/GYN visit (not my actual first, just the first visit for the pain) led to an emergency surgery, as did the second. Thereafter, I had a total of 5 ovarian surgeries within ONE year! Which of course caused me to do poorly for an entire year of college and lose loads of money from missing work. After all of the surgeries on one ovary, and having that ovary removed, the trouble began with the opposite ovary; Lucky me! Being that I was only 19 at the time, I was offered no options because I was so young and don't have any children. I had seen several physicians to no avail, and the last one referred me to a PM clinic. I went to the PM clinic for about a year, and while going there I began to have severe trouble with my back, neck and legs. Luckily the PM doctor understood and treated that as well, and I was diagnosed with Fibromyalgia after the pain was continuous. I continued to go to the PM doctor until my insurance said that I needed to see a specialist for my back; which was fine by me because all I wanted was to get better, and I also moved about an hour away to attend college. While at the PM clinic I tried everything, narcotics, anti-inflammatory medications, muscle relaxers, trigger point injections, PT, and other various things. Needless to say, while I was there my pain was well managed with both the ovarian trouble and the Fibromyalgia, & the doctor was amazing and so understanding and unbiased that I was so young and had so much trouble already.
Fast forward to about 8 months ago, after I stopped going to the PM doctor, and the pain is still there, untreated. I am a full time student and work part time and can't afford any new medical bills (still in debt because of the numerous medical bills from before). My parents help tremendously with my bills, but one is very condescending about my troubles. At one time, after everything I had been through, s/he even told me that I was a drug seeker and that my PM doctor was a "quack" so, needless to say, that parent doesn't understand what I go through on a daily basis, and that is the parent who helps the most with bills. Thank god for the other parent, because s/he knows what I go through. Going to another PM doctor is out of the question for those reasons, and basically any doctor for that matter, although I have health insurance. The parent that understands my pain was crying for me to go to the doctor the other day because I had a flare up, and I just refused to go.
I have tried anything OTC that I can buy, heat and ice packs, home therapy, etc. I have talked to several different pharmacists to see if they recommend anything OTC I haven't tried, and all I get is that I need to see a physician because of the Fibro I know you all suffer with chronic pain as well and am wondering if you know of any alternatives I could take. Maybe home remedies, herbal remedies, ANYTHING would definitely be appreciated by me tremendously. I have heard Lyrica is proven to help Fibro, but that would include me making a trip to the doctor, and I don't want to hear about it from the parent. Also, I absolutely despise going through all of my medical history, and fear that because I'm so young I may not even get the treatment that I need. I'm not a drug seeker, all I want is to feel better.
Thank you so much for reading my novel and I appreciate any feedback that anyone has to offer! It's nice to have a place to come to where people really know what it's like.
I apparently typed 23 instead of 22. I will be 23 in a few months, and then I will be taken off of the parent insurance and get on a plan of my own. To be completely honest, I'm not sure if the insurance said they wouldn't cover the PM visits anymore or what, but that's what the parent said that receives the insurance information. When the parent accused me of being a drug seeker and blah blah blah, I agreed to quit going and see the specialist, and to prove I was not an addict or a drug seeker, and I did just fine! I can obviously still function and attend college full time and work, but it is NOT easy! Just looking for some alternative therapies, I guess you could say!
Thanks for replying, by the way! :)
After researching non-stop today, I found a few alternatives that I hadn't thought of or found previously. So I'm definitely going to try those out! Thanks for everyone's time and I wish everyone on the site the best of luck! :)
I just want to add my two cents. I would go see the Dr. as soon as your new insurance kicks in. I have never heard of an insurance company refusing PM visits, unless of course there were other issues. I do understand wanting to prove the parent(s) wrong. I have been thru many of your situations (had the left ovary removed at 19) What I can say from my situation is that the pain was taking over my life and not to mention my sanity. Forget the stigma, do what is best for you. Everyone is different and so is everyones pain, you have to try different treatments and see what works for you, don't deprive yourself of relief just to prove a point. Again, its only my opinion.

i AM SO SORRY TO HEAR ABOUT YOUR CASE. I HAVE BEEN DIAGNOSED WITH FIBRO TOO.
YOU MAY ALSO HAVE INTERSTITIAL CYSTITIS. THIS IS VERY PAINFUL AND IS RELATED IN A WAY TO FIBRO. IC IS ULCERS IN THE BLADDER. ALSO YOU SHOULD GET A BLOOD TEST DONE BY THE ONCOLOGIST JUST TO RULE OUT CANCER. (SCARY, I KNOW, BUT IT MUST BE DONE ASAP!)
U SHOULD GO ON A SITE LIKE WEBMD OR GOGGLE IT, TO FIND A FIBRO DR. IN YOUR AREA. THEY DO HAVE DR.'S THAT SPECIALIZE IN IT.
YES I KNOW U DON'T WANT ANY MORE BILLS, BUT THESE WOULD BE WORTH IT. AND YOUR FAMILY WILL FINALLY KNOW THAT YOU ARE NOT JUST DRUG SEEKING.
YOU HAVE A LEGIT REASON !!!!!
GOOD LUCK. KEEP THE FAITH.

I can relate to your situation since I'm young and suffered with chronic pain and know what it's like for only about 5% of doctors to actually not treat you like a junkie looking for opioids. You said you still have health insurance? are they no longer covering your PM visits or something? You said your 23 so is it a switch of insurance since thats the cutoff for the whole parent-insurance-plan-for-college-students?
