My doctor has put me on Suboxone to help me get off of Opana and oxycodone. He says I need to wait to take it the first time until I am having withdrawal symptoms. Is thisnecesary or can I start the med whenever?

Generally how Suboxone works

Generally how Suboxone works is the doctor wants you to come into the office when you start going through withdrawal. He will then dose you with the Suboxone and monitor you to see if the dose he just gave you was enough. If not he will more than likely give you more. The reason they do this is to make sure you are not being sub-dosed. Also, it is difficult to know how much to give someone who is coming off of heroin; not like there are standard dosage units when dealing with it. Now if you are coming off of whatever you are and the doctor has given you a prescription for Suboxone and he will not be dosing you in the office than you more than likely can start it straight away. You will feel like garbage at first I'm sure. But all these substances have different half life's and will eventually leave those mu receptors in your noggin'! Why wait for withdrawal? Remember after your first day if you feel that the dosage units you are given aren't enough call your doctor right away. Further make sure you take the medicine correctly. Try not to swallow any of it, let it dissolve under your tongue right behind your gums and teeth. If it helps lean your head forward then down at an angle. You want not to swallow any of the saliva as a result. It's ok it just won't work as well if swallowed. You want to have as much of it absorbed under your tongue as possible.
