HI GUYS, I HAVE BEEN ALL OVER THE INTERNET AND I AM NEW TO THIS FORUM, BUT IT SEEMS TO BE A VERY RESPCTABLE FORUM SO WHAT I AM DOING IS REACHING OUT FOR SOME HOME REMADIES, AND OR SOME INFO ON HOW TO DEAL WITH THE SYEMPTOMS THAT U HAVE FOR RESTLESS LEGS UP SET STOMACH AND WERD FILLING IN YOUR HEAD WHEN U RUN OUT OF YOUR MEDS. IS THERE A SUPLEMENT OUT THERE ANY ADVICE WILL HELP, I HAVE HEARD THAT SAM-E WORKS, ANY WIRHWITH ANY INFO WILL HELP THANKS GUYS.... AND I AM REFERING TO OPITS... THANKS...
THANKS SO MUCH FOR YOUR HELP AND FAST RESPONSE I AM JUST SHORT THE VALUM 8( BUT THANS FOR THE INFO. AND IF I HAD THE VALUM I WOULD NOT HAVE ENOUGHH TIME TO LAY IN THE BED A COUPLE OF DAYS...
gues the only OTC rememdy for RLS I have found is 5-HTP... found in the vitamin isle... of course more info in why you ran out early would be helpful before a CP patient would give out helpeful info.... sorry, but if you took it for the high and to abuse, tough luck
....straight line right?
Having nil understanding of why u ran out prematurely, wouldn't the fastest and most efficient route be to just be straight up with your prescribing caregiver that you need a refill? There's no shame in admitting you mismanaged your dosing schedule, (& for whatever reason--honest!)
They might comp you a stache of free samples that pharmaceutical reps showerupon them. Your doctor may even decide to reevaluate your dosing frequency or volume; hey you took your meds on your own schedule for whatever reason---and that reason can often help your caregiver better understand your needs. You're both on the same team, right?
Right! ;-)
Bottom line: always be straight-up with your doctor, even if predisposed to creative interpretation of dosing guidelines. & if it's a financialthing, you can work with your pharmD to purchase just a partial script pending a time down the road when you can afford the balance of your dose.
Hang in there, friend.
Honesty is the best idea with your doctor, but Im not sure its worked out for many people to tell their doctor "I ran out early." From the doctors point of view it stands to reason that on an existing plan thats beens in place, same meds & qty, that extra pain can be addressed before it's a problem with you running completely out of meds. If you are titrating upwards, then you can expect a dosage increase since you are working to find out what dose will help you best. During the titrating period if the doctor is accepting of it, he'll usually tell you "Please call me if you find yourself running out early, you can be honest with me." The first great doctor I had when I needed pain meds was like this, he told me he would rather deal with some non excessive infrequent early run outs, than have me in withdrawl. He also made sure, as I was finding what worked for me, that I had a surplus of meds. I was seeing him every week, then every two weeks, because he wanted my pain under control, and I usually received scripts for a months worth of meds, just to receive a different dosage or medicine the next week. So I never had reason to run out very often. He was great, got right down and serious to getting my pain under control, since he had experienced some serious pain in med school, and he was around my age. Ive read so many CP posts where people wait months to get adequate pain control after starting treatment. Sadly he got cancer and moved away suddenly.
My new doctor is also great, increased my dosage on the first visit, and continued my current medication. Now we have great trust, but I would not tell him that I ran out early. He is the type that when you make a change, you're stuck with it for the month, except in the case where I brought it to his attention that he under dosed me on the fentanyl patch.
I was in a car accident; on a sunny day coming down the mountain road I hit black ice, lost control, hit the side of the mountain, flipped the car which shattered windows threw everything but my infant son, wife and myself, luckily, out onto the pavement the car continued to slide down. That included the 7 day container I had full, had it with me since I intended to be away from home for a few days. OxyContin and Roxicodone were every where melting on the damp road, and go figure, it had to happen at the end of the month. Even with the increased pain and loss of meds, my doctor gave me some tramadol, lol, and said "you can pick your new rx up next month." Which was only 1-1.5 weeks away, but still. I was lucky that the ER properly medicated me and gave me Norco to take home after I explained my lack of meds, which I called my doctor to tell him everything they injected and the script I filled & he was ok with it.
why are you on meds? if I can be so blunt...i think i missed that part when you joined
Degenerative disc disease with multiple herniated discs, sciatica, I think gabapentin works great for the nerve related pain.
Thank God for seat belts, I cringe when I see kids or babies not properly secured. Had I been one of those slackers my son would have been seriously hurt. His seat worked great, so I got to love Graco, because there we are dangling upside down after a terrific accident and he is laughing away.
from what? just happened? what age? I have the same things plus some other stuff..i am interested in when you had to start meds for this?
I think I was predisposed, my grandma & grandfather on my mothers side both had issues, but I did a lot of heavy lifting, 50lb bags of grain sometimes 3 tons worth of bags at a time along with bales of hay that probably brought it on sooner. It started with numbness at 16 which the chiropractor could help with, had never even heard of sciatica at the time. I had Vicodin here and there 30-60 from my PCP at Kaiser for tearing muscles and ligaments in my shoulder. I also had a pallet expander I had to widen everyday from the orthodontist stretching out my teeth and roof of my mouth. My back started really hurting with activity around 17-18, I had Norco 90 a month for a few months when I was 22 then my insurance changed, in between insurances I started having worse than usual problems at work. I was an extremely active manager and I started having a hard time making it through the day. My leg would hurt, it would be numb and my back would hurt so bad I had tears. I started having to leave early to run home and lay down to cry with a heating pad and finally went to the ER, pain shot and a few Vicodin, info sheet on sciatica. 3 ER visits later I had new insurance and they finally decided to do a CT scan, found the disc problems. I found a doctor who told me I was crazy and didnt care about the CT scan. I left him after snatching my co pay back from the nurse as I walked by. Found a new doc who started me on Percocet at 22, a week later oxycodone 15mg 4 a day, a week later MS Contin 30mg BID, a week after that oxycodone 15mg 6 a day, I stayed on that for nearly a year before I had either the fentanyl patch or OxyContin with oxycodone IR for BT.
You know something interesting is that back when I had Norco, there was some left when I started the Percocet, and I stopped the Percs and finished up the Norco before taking the Percs again because I got more relief from 1 Norco than 2 Percs. Now its the other way around.
So Drew, do you still think this is a respectable forum or have you thought otherwise?
LOL, herrball! Yeah, if DrewP sticks around long enough, he may find out his first perception was not totally correct!
Oh, but we are a loving bunch, DP, honestly.
As far as the restless legs and thomas recipe, if you have no access to Valium or Xanax, I always like Valerian. I've used it for years for sleep and its also helped me with anxiety and restless legs a little. While certainly not as effective as benzos, (which I personally don't like - they make me mean) its definitely better than nothing.
Oh, if I may highjack this thread a little bit, I am having a triple nerve release surgery in a few hours. I haven't written about it much, but for a few months, I have had some INTENSE pain in my left arm, which began at my elbow then progressed to my hand. My hand muscles started to atrophy, last two fingers became extremely weak and almost paralyzed with numbness and tingling of the arm. Anyway, my doctor/neurologist did EMG/NCS which he says was "normal". which made no sense. I work for a neurologist and have a little knowledge of anatomy and knew that what I was experiencing was classic ulnar symptoms. so my doctor/boss did an EMG/NCS and found not only the classic ulnar compressive neuropathy at the elbow, which I was pretty sure I had, but also ulnar compressive neuropathy at the wrist, along with bilateral carpal tunnel (which was no surprise considering that I have been doing medical transcription for 20 years). So today, they are going to release all three of the nerves and I can't wait. I just hope that I will be able to get back to typing. My surgeon tells me that I should be able to at least start picking at the keys within a few days. to those of you that have had this surgery, is this a realistic expectation? I've been having some pretty intense arguments with my office manager and also my doctor boss about it. Their preference would be for me to do no typing for a MONTH! I don't want anyone doing my work! I'm hoping, as my surgeon said, to be able to do some by the end of this week. I hope so now because I've resisted finding someone to cover for me, so if I can't do it, oooh, I"m gonna be in trouble!
I doubt anyone else would want another person doing your work, they sound extremely fond of it from what Ive read in your posts. Im sorry you need surgery, but Ill still laugh if you come back to tell me that you ended up at work hunting and pecking with one hand.
I've run out early ie, giving my dad a few or "lending" to a friend until her script gets filled (never reimbursed me!) So I learned the hard way. I had to get by on Tylenol 3's for several days until my next appt. Best thing to do when you get your meds is to put them in one of those daily pill containers and put the rest away. You don't want to have to go through this again...
mrbrand - i have a feeling that is exactly what i will do! of course, i only just had surgery yesterday, but oh boy, does this hurt! thankfully, i do my typing at home, so no one will be a witness to my suffering, but since i made such a big deal about "i dont need any help, i can do it, i'll be fine", there is no way that i can admit that i can't do it! they really don't WANT anyone to do my work, but they actually care about me and would rather have someone take over for awhile until i heal. and as we sit, yes, i most certainly am hunting and pecking with one hand!
boy i wish that would work for me, TC! but hubby is a drug addict and i have to "hide my stash" or he will steal them all!
by the way, how are you, drewp?
I have been in a lot of pain lately with the colder weather and I must say, you made my day!!
I got a good smile out of you hunting and pecking, then, just when I thought it could not get better I read this:"boy i wish that would work for me, TC! but hubby is a drug addict and i have to "hide my stash" or he will steal them all!"
I can almost see the exact partially serious but smiling face you would make saying that, as well as the tone of voice.
My abs hurt.
hehehehe, "hide my stash" ........... and from all people, your husband! LOLOLOLOLOLOLOL, I can just see him executing a search when you go to get the mail (que Pink Panther theme), or you leaving him notes in places you think he might look that say "sorry not here" "not here" "nope, not here either", or a picture of a pill, or you putting a few in an old bottle tucked away that has Midol in it. Tell me those pills say Midol on them? If not, and they were to go missing just telling him, "Honey, those were'nt pain pills, you've been taking Midol" is priceless. Addiction is not funny, so I dont mean offense, but thanks for sharing, and thanks for the laugh. You have no idea how much I needed it.
I also must know something, is Beavis in BeavisMom stand for that old MTV cartoon Beavis & But head? (mispelled intentionally) If not please share, or PM me your name because all I can ever think of when I see your name is the obnoxious behavior of those cartoon characters, and since you seem so nice, I need a different visual, only if you dont mind. I have watched the cartoon many times, so if it is the cartoon your name is after, Im not trying to put you down.
In all my laughing I forgot to wish you a quick recovery......so, may you have a quick recovery. I hope the pain gets better too. You should be touch typing in no time, if not, have you ever seen the episode of The Simpsons where Homer is like 500lbs, working from home, wearing a moo moo and puts that bird that swings back and forth in front of the keyboard so it pecks the same key over and over until the plant melts down?
Oh, you crack me up too. I'm now for the first time trying to type with two hands, but its close to impossible with two numb fingers and a painful hand. To tell the truth, I've pretty much done all of that trying to hide pills and if I substitute a "placebo" he always knows. He has the imprints of his favorite pills memorized. I'm not offended and your "pink panther theme "cracked me up too. You can't imagine the places where I hide my stuff ie inside of shoes, pockets of old jackets, tampon boxes (he is on to that one, tho!), at the moment, my pill bottle is in my pocket so I rattle when I walk! I busted him yesterday when he got money from my folks. I gave him $40 to pick up my RX and to buy some beer. But he got $50 from my folks, cause his pills cost $15 a piece, so after paying $20 for my RX, he would have had $30 left, enough for 2 pills. I demanded to see the receipt from the pharmacy and made hiim empty the nasty garbage on the street to find it. He did and I had my answer. He tried to lie his way out of it and I really had to laugh. PO'd him royally! Na, na, na, na, na, naaa!!
Yes, Beavis does sorta stand for the cartoon, but its because it is the name of my little best friend, my 15 year old little terrier mix, Beavis AKA as Beav or "THE Beav". So HE was named after the cartoon (my son and I used to watch it when he was little) and I am named after my dog. And neither of us look like either Beavis OR Buthead!
Ok, now I'm trying to figure out if I should be offended or not. I've taken with good humor your laughs about my addicted husband, my name and now you are comparing me to a 500 lb Homer!
BTW, I am SO TOTALLY kidding! I enjoy a good laugh as well as you do and its always the taboo things which are the funniest! (Just like Polish jokes. I am Polish by the way!) I do remember that episode and it was pretty funny. To make it even funnier and to give you a little visual of me, I'm 5'5" and 120 lbs with long red curly hair and my name is Judie. Nothing like a yellow, bald, 500 lb Homer in a mu mu!!!
Thanks for the good wishes. And the same back atcha, my friend. You crack me up and make me laugh too. Sorry to hear about the cold weather effects on your pain. I hear it all the time from my patients at work. Thankfully, the cold weather doesn't bother me, but the damp weather does. Although, being in FL, we don't have lots of cold weather, but we do have lots of wet weather, or at least humid. Thanks for the laughs and I hope you feel better too!
Oh, Drew. Sorry to hijack your thread. But you haven't been back. Where are you? How are you? Hope all is well with you. Best of luck.
Talking about pain and pain meds can get so "dry", you know, our conversation here was so refreshing. Judie, you are funny, Im glad you didnt take offense and have a great sense of humor.
Brandon
Hey, anything I can do to refresh you, just ask! LOL! Hope you are feeling better today. I'm seeing some improvement myself. (and, for FL, its COLD outside today!)
myself beavismom and its maybe 60 around tampa..brrrrr.
you too, huh goat? i don't think its quite THAT cold here, but close!
it has warmed up to 64...i am breaking out a jacket
People north of Georgia must think we are nuts!
i am from ohio and when i moved down here in 92 i had a good laugh watching people in heavy winter coats when it got in the 50s . I always am wearing shorts though...can't stand the feeling of pants..as long as i keep my core warm i am good to go.
Speaking of not being used to cold climate, I moved from Michigan 24 years ago. I had some errands to run today and realized it was colder outside than it was in the house the A/C running. But it is refreshing!

You, too TC? I noticed that too. Thought it was a little chilly inside with the AC on, but then I let the dogs out and whew...! CHILLY!!! OPEN THE WINDOWS!!! And it is refreshing though. I hope it stays chilly like this for a while until my arm heals so I can go out in the hottub when its cold at night. Now, THAT is refreshing!
I moved to Savannah, GA from Pittsburgh in '82 to join the army. And I also got a good laugh at all these people running around in 60-70 degree weather going "oh, its so cold" and I would be in a Tshirt and shorts thinking what a bunch of p*ssies! This is SPRING weather! But, lo these many years later and I find that I am a p*ssy myself!
(No pants, huh Goat??? hmmmmm.......)
avg temp. was a nice 55 year round, now 60 degrees perfect for light chores, any thing hotter than that it gets miseriable.
Woodstock
im always running out early. and i admit its my fault. i just need to know what other people do when they run out
Suffer.
If you can get a script for Tramadol, most doctors wont hesitate to give it since its so weak, it will help significantly until you can get your meds filled. I have had time where I ran out for a day or two because *you know what* happens. The tramadol didnt help my pain much but really put a cap on the withdrawls I had since my body was dependant on the meds I had been taking for some time.
some people over indulge by the mere presence of the medication in the bottle, they run out sometimes a full week before time for a refill, they make it just fine until its refill time or time to see the Dr.
if merely the presence of the pills cause pain, an a person can do fine without them until the next refill, then apparently there s really nothing wrong with them, besides having pills that need to be took.
We re all a, then adults here, if one cannot abide by the dosing without approval from ones Dr. then one must pay Their dues an suffer, merely calling Your Dr. to document the extra need may be the step necessary to get adequate pain releif, but what if after getting a increase We run out early again.
self control is the key, let Your consceince be Your guide, if the halflife factor is not right an they do lab work, You re looking to get terminated from the Dr.s practice.
Woodstock
Woodstock, you crack me up guy! Sometimes I cant understand a single word you say. hehehe =)

Someone somewhere recommended those multi-day pill holders, and I think that is your best bet. (Unless your are on fentanyl, no fentanyl product will fit in those pill cases except fentora which really shouldnt be out of its safety blister pack until you are ready to use it) If you ration out your pills in those containers, at the very least the narcotics, you will always know you have enough for the month. Empty each days pills into a travel container (both travel & 7 day containers only $0.98 @ wally world) and not matter how much you hurt dont touch the other days pills. If you have an extra pill or two on any given day put it in the emergency back up stash bottle only to be used when the pain is bad enough to consider going to the ER. I myself can too easily say "just one extra today since I hurt and I'll take one less tomorrow" and it just doesnt work out. I started the containers and its great, I dont have to worry. When Im on fentanyl I just pull a patch out of the safe to stick in the locking pack I got from Cephalon, as well as that days amount of Actiq units. There is also room for two of my seven day pill cases should I need to take them which have my Soma, Motrin, Colace etc. all divided out, as well as my travel container. My glove box locks so if Im going to be out all day or on a long trip I take my pack and leave it locked in my glove box, and on quick trips my travel case works fine right inside my pocket. (except the times I forget its in there an wash it)
Anyways, something else I find that helps pain, and possibly withdrawls is a multi vitamin, amino acids and antioxidants. You never know what your body is depleted of and you could be in need of some extra nourishment. Those three things really help me feel better in any situation. A quick way to give your body a nutrition boost is to drink AirBorne. I drink AirBorne even when I am not sick but am in extra pain or just not feeling 100% and it really helps. Ensure is also loaded with nutrients but I think AirBorne is easier to drink, especially if your stomach is upset from being in withdrawl.
I know when I get to the end of the month and I can start seein the bottom of the bottle I'll try to cut one dose per day in half or take a slightly reduced amount each dose. When I was prescribed 5 pills per day I could get away with only taking 4 by taking 3/4s of a tablet for 4/5 doses. The other thing I try to do is space them apart further. When I'm really active at work I can't always put more space in between doses than I already do so that leaves me trying to space out the time between wake up and first dose and the time between last dose and bed time. I'll use a strong sleep aid nights when I skip my usual last dose of the day. Also I find that I can go longer in the morning without taking a dose if I wake up an hour earlier than I need to and get ready then go back to sleep for an hour and set an alarm for the time I have to walk out the door. I don't know why but it helps me...maybe just because it breaks up my routine a little bit. When I'm tryin to space out afternoon doses I try to be more active. Not active like back breaking labor but I'll go walk around the mall or maybe just take a drive, go sit in the park, play a video game. Anything to keep my mind active and not thinking about when I take my next pill...
It is a difficult struggle but I've cut my daily intake of oxycodone by about 50% in the past 3 months. I started around 180mgs and am down to 90...trying to do 75 but somedays (like today) I made it all the way til right before bedtime and only had taken 67.5...the throbbing pain got to me and I took an extra 30mgs. Part of me feels bad about giving in but on the other hand I can't afford to miss anymore sleep and consequentially work due to this condition....
Anyways, enough ranting...its time to try to sleep.
night all
should do if moderate pain is all that is happening , take an split an hydrocodone an try to dose every 3 to 4 hours an only take the other part if absolutely necessary.
One can get a couple pills saved back if over indulging can be prevented, an believe me they be more emergencys than 1 can prepare for.
Woodstock
Wow, those are good ideas woodstock, mrbrand and oneir. I wish I could do something like that, but I'm not in pain management yet and have to beg for that whopping #30 Lortab I get a month. and to top it off, addict husband either begs for them or steals them. He has been unemployed for over a year now and is always asking for money for pills. Admittedly, I give it to him when I'm hurting pretty bad and need some relief. But he asked yesterday and I finally told him no. I told him that there are many people in the world in pain that don't get drugs off the street and turn into addicts. So, he is going to mope and pout and sit around the house.
upsets me
please do not go around the word filters thanks
NEW TO FORUM
everyone please forgive any misspelling.
Here's my 2 cents on opioids I was given 30 mg. morphine for brand new back problem, ( I had never taken morphine before in my life, but I had been taking a script for perc 5/325 as original script for this new back problem. I then was given the morphine because the perc 5/325 were doing no good for pain) 90 days worth X 2 a day recommended. (found out 4 months later after MRI that I had ruptured disk!) At the end of the morphine script, (45 days later) I was experiencing classic withdrawal symptoms the next day.
I took the gaba the next day when the symptoms started, 300 mg. x 2, ( that's 600 mg. total at noon on semi empty stomach) they took close to 2 hrs to reach an Effect: I felt sort of cannabis high without the time distortion effect. Very mild euphoric effect. None of these effects of taking gaba were know to me at the time so I was surprised by them when they came on. I ate something at the 2 hr. +3 point and began to feel more focused. I could drive a car if necessary but wouldn't. Ok long story short, I took the same dose of gaba at noon in same way for 3 days. at the end of 3 days I stopped the gabapentin. the very next day I had no more opiod withdrawal symptoms!!!!! No cravings for either gaba or morphine!!! I didn't take after that day and to date this was 2 months ago and have not had any problem!!! read up on gaba. before taking for any reason. This drug, Gabapentin was a miracle for my problem.

Oh BMom, dont get me started on your husband again.
I cant stop laughing about what you said already. "You laugh about me typing with one hand, now Im not sure if I should be offended. I took with good humor your laughing about my addicted husband, then about my name and now you are comparing me to a 500lb Homer in a mu mu.......nothing like a 500lb, bald, yellow Homer." LMAO!
Gabapentin mkes me to spacey to function well.... but it provided an extra kick for painkillers that helped with end result I wasn't taking opoids as often so I didn't run out. My insurance doesn't cover them anymore though. Gabapentin did make job difficult as I have a hard time concentrating when taking it.
....just dig into my doomsday stash. I have enough opiates and minor tranquilizers to supply a small hospital for a week. I'm conservative with my therapy.
But when I have chosen to go without, I find that I need clonidine at the least to control the cardiovascular symptoms I get almost immediately after missing a scheduled dose.
If I had to quit cold turkey again, I would choose to be an inpatient. My CNS hyperarousal is extreme.
why does nt your Husband seek the services of the county behavior health center, most give methadone to detox on, it may be a pain for the 1st couple weeks unless he can talk them into pill therapy.
I know several reasons why not, but before I blow big bucks,I choke down some humblepie an seek help, sooner or later a random pill count is gonna blow your big 30 count , an then it may be both.

this is a site about medicines, and advice forums about medicines. It is not a site for you to personally judge people looking for advice. I hope you are in that situation one day and you will "Never Forget" it. And yes I am making fun of your super generic, phony, wanna be-patriotic screenname.
If anyone has a question about any painkiller or Benzo- xanax per say, lemme know. Ill probably be ale to help you out. I should have been a pharmacist.
