Thank you for the reply. I am a nurse, and a pt had asked me if there was such a dose. I had never heard of it, so I tried this site. thanks for the reply
there is such a thing as a 80mg methadone my mom is on it from a treatment clinic and they offer a time release liquid and a time release waffer and she is on 130 or a 140mg treatment and it goes up in 10mg doses and the dose has to be given in one amount if you were on 140 they can't give you 2 70mg waffers of course this is in indiana and we do things different here but what she takes is called oralam it is orange sherbet in color and is about the size of a nickle and i have seen the bottle and lable and waffer with my own eyes she has been on it for years but just recently changed to the waffer from the liquid kirby is right for straight methadone pills but there are many differrent things from treament center to another and when she was in the hospital she could not get the waffers she took normaly they give her 14 10mg methadone pills and she did not think about it until it was to late and then realized they were not time release and she was sick for hours they about overdosed her and her treament clinic was very upset but you may talk to your patient agian to find out the oragin of the question because methadone can be very dangerous
There is no such thing as an 80mg Methadone pill or wafer at this time. Unless you consider taking two 40mgs an 80mg. And if you disagree, I would like to see hard evidence as to it's existence.
Dateline 5 July 2006: Sometime in recent weeks (at least, possibly in as much as in the past two months) an 80 mg. Methadone wafer has become available in the U.S. for Physicians to prescribe. Pharmacies are now stocking it, and several friends of mine have had scrips filled now...just thought someone out their might want to know!
Aguaceros
I had a friend about a week ago tell me that he had 80mg methadone and said it was the size of about an alkaselzer tablet, and I couldnt believe him. I still dont, but he swore thats what it was so who knows? It would be great if someone could post a pic of some sort to prove of its existence just to be sure, till then its up in the air!
"I am not a medical doctor or expert, any advice given is strictly for the exploration of knowledge and making sure we share what we already know!"
hmmm.....
i have just got thru looking at the dateline archives and cant find anything to support this. i did find a few mentions of methadone but nothing about an 80 mg waffer being produced.
perhaps you could give us a link to support this?
Nor is there any such thing as a methadone time release syrup or liquid.
I went through the internet and through the FDA website... I have found neither anything called Oralam, nor any pills in 80 mg size. As was stated before, 40 mg is the largest size issued the the US ( and that includes Indiana).
We can't find it either in our pharmacy resources. We have all the distributors with all their pills and nothing over 40 mg is distributed at this time.
You can get 2 wafers at 40 mg each, but there is not an 80 mg wafer.
and it makes little sense to turn a drug that has a half life of 24-48 hours into a time release formula... you already need to take it once a day (the purpose of having a time release in the first place).
concur, concur, concur
Orlaam used to be perscribed for opioid dependence, it was originally produced by Roxane Labs and its actual name is LAAM or Levomethadyl hydrochloride acetate but in any case it was pulled from the shelves a few years ago because of severe cardiac related problems with many people. Its not even being made anymore let alone perscribed. People that have been perscribed to LAAM after this info came out had to be switched to methadone or probably bupe/suboxone. I beleive the dose for methadone when coming from laam is 80% the originally laam dose.
In any case its very hard to beleive that your mother or whoever is still perscribed to LAAM unless shes got a giant supply stashed away , however theres no doubt in my mind that theres a 80mg Done out there because lots of people at methadone clinics have to take at LEAST 1 of the 40mg wafers to get by without being sick. So it would make sense they make a higher dosage tablet. In any case thats just my 2 cents. im done.
PS. By all means check out the FDA's page on it http://www.fda.gov/cder/drug/shortages/orlaam.htm
The 40 mg Methadone disc is the highest MG in a single pill. I know this because I have been on Methadone for over 2 years.
Atleast that is way they do it in Illinois. I have searched the internet, and can not find any one methadone pill with a higher MG.
love my PHARMs.
KNIGHTMETAL
well w/out any definitive proof to back it up will just have to assume that you are incorrect and accept that statement as your opinion.
in the u.s. 40 mg is the highest dosage made. the f.d.a would provide info i that wasnt the case. unless of course it is a conspiracy like others have suggested before.
well w/out any definitive proof to back it up will just have to assume that you are incorrect and accept that statement as your opinion.
who was this directed to? if it was me your in no place to tell me im incorrect because i said straight out, thats just my 2 cents, and the fact that it seemed "LOGICAL" they make higher dosages because most junkies out there take quite a bit more than 40mg a day. So say if there was an 80 out there, which im not saying does or does not exist, would seem logical to have on the market. after all fentynal comes in 100microgram patches, those are quite a bit stronger and more dangerous than 80mg of methadone but theyre out there.
then again if it wasnt directed towards me, just consider this a veterans rant that holds no bearing.
Agreed!
40mg is the largest methadone dose made
"in my mind that theres a 80mg Done out there because lots of people at methadone clinics have to take at LEAST 1 of the 40mg wafers to get by without being sick. So it would make sense they make a higher dosage tablet. In any case thats"
Methadone clinics despence syrup not pills. The dose can be raised or lowered by as little as 1 mg.
No 80mg tab, only 40 mg wafers
There is no need to bring back a thread that is over one year old and not add anything new to the discussion. If you said something that was new and wasn't already covered then that would be a different story.
yes you can call it time released i;ve been on liquid methadone for years
when you take your dose it stays within the body 24 hrs plus
All methadone has a half life of 24 hours iirc, so I wouldn't consider it time released...just the normal metabolization of the methadone.
As of Jan. 1st 2008 There will be no Methadone pill larger than a 10mg pill at any pharmacy. Check for yourself. Only in Treatment centers will there be anything stronger than a 10mg Methadone pill. Like ITC (Indiana treatment center for reahbilitation.
Dr Mike

There is no 80 mg methadone marketed in the US per the FDA lists of approved products. 40 mg is the largest dose in a single tablet.
