I am going to have surgery on my shoulder in two weeks. My orthopedic perscribed me Lortab 5/500 about two weeks ago and I have been taking them since for the pain I am experienceing now. What is the doctor most likely to perscribe me ofter surgery. The Lortab seem to still have a painkilling effect but I am taking two of them a day now.
thanx, its kind of a hard question to have an exact answer for but the lortabs are somewhat becoming tolerate to me. Would oxy or upping hydro strength work better for shoulder impingement surgery
Let me rephrase that question I just asked. For severe short term pain ( like after sholder surgery) is hydrocodone and oxycodone the only two meds they prescribe.
when i had my 2 operations on my lower back...they only increased my percocets by maybe 2 extra a day...that would be 6 of the fives...

Hydrocodone or Oxycodone with tylenol are certainly the most commonly prescribed drugs for regular post operative pain.
Although hydrocodone and oxycodone are most popular for post op pain I have seen one person get prescribed dilaudid 2mg after having a stint put in.
I'm having decompression surgery for shoulder impingement, does anyone know how severe the pain is after surgery and what dosage of hydro or oxy I will recieve? By the way thanx for the responses guys.
you sound totally scared to death...I had a impingement of the right elbow..i could not use my hand to tie my shoes..no grip between thumb and index finger....I have a nice 12 inch scar as a memory...and the meds were extra percs..total of 30 mg a day of oxycodone. the pain was what it was..no one can tell exactly how you will feel...just take it easy and let things heal.

I have experienced a lot of painful procedures in my life so the opperation doesnt scare me. I just want to be sure that I recieve adequate pain medicine for the procedure. I have had shoulder surgery in the past and also have had a chest tube put in after I was running the option during a high school game and suffered a collapsed lung and broken ribs. Im not scared to death im just wondering what strength of meds the doc wil most likely persrcibe.
Man he answered it already for you. Its up to the doctor. There is NO way to know what he is going to do and if you specifically ask for a medicine he will be ULTRA cautious with you and that isnt something you want. if the medicine he gives you doesnt work, thats another thing, but right off the bat, it is impossible to know. Just worry about getting better dude, not what kind of medicine he will give ya heh hehh...
Good Luck!!
Thanx for the imput
Hey. After this is all done come back and tell us how you are doing and what meds you were given. Dont worry man medicine today is extremely good and will help you with your surgery and post op pain. Just be careful and dont over do it like my brother did and end up back in the operating room! take care man and let us know how you do.
When I recentley chopped my pinky off(at the first bend it was hanging by a thread) The doctor at the emergency room just numbed me up and sent me to see a specialist. He gave me Oxycodone 10/325, enough til the surgery date. Then he gave me the same thing after the surgery, he put pin in my broken finger and sewed it back on. And then we had to schedule another surgery to take the pin back out a few weeks later. But after that one he only gave me Hydrocodone 5/500. So I guess it depends on what type of procedure your having done.
Thanx Flyer, I'll do just that. By the way what is the maximum amount of tylenol (acetemeniphen) one should take in one setting. Ive been taking 5/500 lortab and my bodys starting to get used to them. Started with one a day now its 15 days later and i did 2 and a half.
Well the maximum tylenol intake is 4000mg per day so I would assume no more than 1000mg every 6 hours although I have exceeded almost triple that in one sitting with no noticeable effect......but i did say no noticeable effect...there might have been slight damage i dont know about. I would try to keep it 1000mg or under every dose(which should be 4-6 hours)
i was 20 when i got my first bout with kidney stones, i had 3 stones blocking my ureter, so i found urinating painful, when i went to the first urologist he only gave me toradol tablets (same as sugar pills. got a second opinion and was put on endo 10/325, and after 13 days of the endos, i was forced to have a stent placed in, which had to be there for 6 weeks, i was immediately placed on OC 20s and roxi 5s for bt, when my stent was taken out, my tolerance already was at 2 oc 20s a day and 4 5s a day, my doctor was familiar with the tolerance factor, hope you have a doctor like mine, called me at home to see how i fealt. some doctors were just made for what they do. thats my two cents

It depends on the doctor mostly. I know someone who had back surgery and only got percacet 5mg(although he got a lot of them) which is equivalent to a lortab 7.5. Then I know someone who had surgery on his hand and only got vicodin 5/500 4 per day. Then I know someone else who had surgery on his hand and got 6 percacet 10mgs per day. So it depends on the doc as two people i know broke their hand and had to get pins put in...one got 6 percacet 10mg per day and the other only got 4 5/500 vicodins so it varies and depends on your doc and what surgery you are having.
