I was wondering if anyone has had this problem. I am breastfeeding a five month old baby exclusively and taking Hydrocodone. I am wondering if my baby will have any trouble once I start to ween myself off of the meds, as that is my long term plan. I know that she had to adjust once she was born as she must have received more in utero than she does by nursing. I assume that due to a comment made by a nurse. I am not a bad mother, but I do struggle with this addiction. She is very healthy and is thriving. I also nursed my older daughter, who is now three, from the time she was four months until she was over a year old while taking it. Back then, however, my dosage was a lot less. Does anyone have any ideas or thoughts on this matter? PS. I am not a bad person, just fighting with myself over something I know that I desperately need to leave behind.

According to the PDR

Hydrocodone is a pregnancy category C drug : Not for use in nursing

Cat C= Risk cannot be ruled out.

Hope this helps

It has been prescripbed for

It has been prescripbed for me at one time, just not at the dosage I am currently taking.  I meant would she have withdrawals when I quit?

oh heck yes

yes. she will have withdrawls. I had to have surgery while I was nursing. Because I had to be on Lorazapam prior to the surgery for extreme anxiety... (massive facial surgury they had to do while I was still awake). I had to ween my son COLD TURkey. one day he just got the ba... I didn't know anything about what withdrawls were. at  6 mos old I'm sure I put him thru a living ???$*. I didn't know. Wean her off your breast. Apply for wic. but don't do anything suddenly. Also, the apap she is getting prob isn't good either.

Weening

I do not plan to ween her until she is 12-18 months old, so I plan to ween myself off of the pills first.  Formula is just not something I want to do.  I know that probably sounds really dumb, but breastfeeding is something that I really want to do for her.  Especially because I am lucky to have a great milk supply and a good pump.  I have been looking at the other forums that have weening plans for adults on pain medication and I think I can do it if I put my mind to it.  It just takes willpower I guess, and inner strength.  I can do it, for her I can do anything.

Gracie,Here is a link you

Gracie,

Here is a snippet from Mothering.com about certain drugs and breastfeeding

From Mothering.com(click link for entire article)

Specific Drugs

Analgesics
The analgesics most commonly used by breastfeeding women are acetaminophen and ibuprofen. Both are ideal, because the levels they attain in breastmilk are largely subclinical, and both are cleared for pediatric use. Levels of ibuprofen transferred into milk following 400 mg maternal doses are generally less than 1 mg per liter of milk. Long-acting nonsteroidals (NSAIDS) such as naproxen (Aleve, Naprosyn) should be avoided, although they are not absolutely contraindicated if used only briefly, say for a few days.

Codeine and hydrocodone are often used for mild postpartum pain. The amount of codeine transferred into milk is marginal, although sedation and apnea have been reported with frequent, higher doses. If doses of codeine and hydrocodone are kept low and administered after breastfeeding, few cases of neonatal sedation have been reported. In many respects, morphine continues to be an ideal strong opiate for breastfeeding mothers in moderate to severe pain. Due to poor oral absorption (26 percent), morphine produces only minimal sedation in breastfed infants. Frequent and repeated exposure, however, can lead to accumulation in the infant and should be avoided.

Thanks

Thank you for the link.  I assume that she received more while I was pregnant than she does by nursing.  Anyone been successful weening themselves off of the 10/500s? I have a plan, I just have yet to start it.  I have what I need to begin, I just dread the process as I have not been without the medication for nearly two and a half years.  Since I really had no injury or real pain to need the medication originally, I hope this will make it easier for me.

Gracie,As far as weening

Gracie,

As far as weening plans go, there are many on this site.

However, a site that you might find more helpful is Opiatedetoxrecovery.com.  You can type in "weening" in the search engine on pharmer and read the numerous weening processes other members have gone through.

Or you can go to the link I provided and read all about weening processes, how to do it, what to expect, etc, etc.  Opiatedetoxrecovery.com is a peer to peer based help group, and they seem to care about the well being of each other.  Give them a try and see what they have to say.
