Hello, Are there any currently available generic oxycontin 80 mg? A friend has asked me to research this for him. He's been getting it for several years, paid for by medicare or medicaid, not sure which. The last time that he went to get his script filled his pharmacist told him that there was no more generic available. His insurance won't pay for the name brand.
Seems that I recall reading a while back about there being some litigation in regards to this medication and that only the name brand would be available.
Any information would be appreciated. Thanks for your time.
He is right about the authorization, but there is a generic now out by Ethex, its the same thing as OxyContin, same imprint, made by Purdue just distributed by Ethex as a generic. Its a fairly new deal so maybe the shipment just hasnt reached your area yet, but hope this helps.
Not all Medicaid plans will allow for prior authorizations for it. A few years back I was on Medicaid and my doctor prescribed me Oxycontin (and there was even a generic at the time). The medication wasn't on their formulary, even with a PA so even after numerous appearls, etc. they wouldn't approve it. In the end it didn't matter because when I did try it, morphine worked better for me. Unfortunately I'm back on Oxycontin now (not on Medicaid any longer) because the only brand of morphine available lately around here is a brand that doesn't work for me and I actually started to have withdrawals on it. Right now I'm in the process of appealing a decision not to cover a vitamin supplement that I need that isn't on my health insurance plan's forumlary. What's ridiculous is the medication only costs about $20! They won't cover that, but they'll cover $3000 a month medications no questions asked. I don't get it. I mean, this is a medication I need to keep my heart beating properly and they don't want to cover it because it's not on their formulary, even with my doctor's letters pleading for them to cover it because I need it to live basically.
As others have mentioned, there have been different generics available at different times. The last I heard the only company permitted to manufacture a generic was only allowed to do so until March 2009 which obviously has passed. Some pharmacies have still had the generics available due to back stock etc...It seems that the few places with generics in stock are running out fast. mrbrandman said that an ethex generic has recently started production and if what he says is true (I've heard basically the same info elsewhere) this ethex generic should be generally accepted as more effective...
I just had an Rx filled today for 60mg Oxycontin, to my disbelief the only kind they had was name brand! My cost difference with co-pay is $60. When I asked what the deal was, this is how it was explained: "ALL GENERIC MANUFACTURING OF OXYCONTIN AND OXYCODONE PRODUCTS MUST SUBMIT IN WRITING TO THE FDA PRIOR TO DECEMBER 1ST, THE AMOUNT OF MEDICATION IT WILL PRODUCE FOR THE NEXT CALENDAR YEAR. THIS FIGURE CAN NOT EXCEED MORE THAN 15% OVER LAST YEARS PRODUCTION, AND IT MUST BE BACKED UP BY DEMAND".
At the chain of grocery stores where I get all my meds they said that they started running out of the 20mg strength last month as well.
Essentially, a majority of the generics out there are just plain sold out, due to supply and demand for this drug! The FDA imposes this type of restriction on very few medications at the request of the "NON-GENERIC", pharma companies!!!!
I hope this Helps

Hmmmm?? It could be just me but that makes no sense to me given the cirumstances. Im not doubting that those could be real standards, but Oneir already mentioned when the other generic ended and why. It had nothing to do with % of production, Purdue who is calling the shots after recent legal issues, simply stipulated a time to when Malli's royalty bearing generic distribution rights would end. We have had confirmation from someone who has received the "generic" made by Purdue, distributed by Ethex, heck for all we know Purdue ships it too and all thats done is add Ethex on the label. There is a thread where we have talked about the agreement between Purdue and Ethex, or you can go to either website and look up all their press releases.
RWill someone told you a big one, lie that is. Welcome to Pharmer where you can find correct info and some really good people. Take care, Htmom
rwilley the reason there was no generic ethex for the 60mg tablets is because purdue only authorized 10,20,40, and 80mg strengths to be made since the 15, 30 and 60mg tablets are newer formulations and where not around when Mallinckrodt and Ethex (KV pharma) went to court with Purdue who was granted a 30 month stay (both companies had to hold off making the drugs even though they both got approval) with an additional 180 day exclusitivity (6 months the exact amount of time Mallinckrodt made them by the way) against both companies which can be granted when a generic company gets approval to manufacture a drug that is still on patent through loopholes, paperwork mistakes, etc.
Also your pharmacists idea of how the DEA's aggregate qouta is off, but atleast the guy/gal is kinda trying to understand.
