Tramadol

Tramadol is an Non-opiate Synthetic Analgesic

Tramadol is a quasi-narcotic analgesic used in the treatment of moderate to severe pain. It is a synthetic analog of codeine, but has a low binding affinity to the mu-opioid receptors.
---------------------------------------------------------------------
Hydrocodone is an opiate narcotic. Oxycodone is an opiate narcotic and is one of the two derivatives of morphine, the other being hydromorphone. http://www.erowid.org/pharms/oxycodone/oxycodone.shtml
They are both used primarily in the treatment of pain and both considered controlled substances making them highly addictive and illegal for the transfer from one patient to another. www.erowid.org

As far as I understand

As far as I understand it, Hydrocodone and Oxycodone are both semi-synthetic opiod agonists. Oxycodone is derived from Thebain, NOT Morphine. Hydrocodone can be derived from both thebain or codeine. They are both narcotic analgesics and controlled substances.

Derivatives of Morphine include Hydromorphone and Oxymorphone.

Tramadol is a synthetic atypical opiod. It is not considered narcotic at this time, but there is always an ongoing debate whether it is or is not and whether it should be or not (on this site, and in the medical profession/community). It is not a controlled substance. Tramadol was originally said to have a low risk of dependency, however the prescribing info for Ultram/Tramadol carries the warning that it may be habit forming.

From www.wikipedia.com

Opiate:

"The term is often incorrectly used to refer to all drugs with opium- or morphine-like pharmacological action, which are more properly classified under the broader term opiod.

The main opiates drived from opium are morphine, codeine and thebaine"

Also from www.wikipedia.com

Opioid:

"Although the term opiate is often used as a synonym for opioid, it is more properly limited to the natural opium alkaloids and the semi-synthetics derived from them"

Hmmm....

"Oxycodone is derived from Thebain, NOT Morphine."

Opioids can be classified as the following:

Partially synthetic derivatives of morphine - [filtered word], oxycodone, oxymorphone,

Naturally occurring opium derivatives - Morphine

Synthetic compounds - Fentanyl, alfentanil, levorphanol, meperidine, methadone, codeine, propoxyphene

I see links out there saying

I see links out there saying it comes from morphine, but then I find contradictory information. I did in depth research and used some other very credible sources that I can't link to because they are subscription and I still am leaning towards thebain.

Oh well, im not here to argue, just wanted to post the specific links from which I based my previous post.

"Oxycodone is a very powerful and addictive opioid analgesic medication synthesized from thebain."

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oxycodone

Here is the monograph from GSM (Gold Standard), a source we can all agree is very credible:

"Oxycodone is an oral semisynthetic opiate agonist derived from the opioid alkaloid, thebaine, and is similar to other phenanthrene derivatives, such as hydrocodone and morphine."

GSM, first sentence

Partially synthetic

I'm definitely not saying that you are wrong I'm just making a point that we could both be correct in certain aspects, but i researched and found that oxycodone is derived semi synthetically from morphine, but in all reality morphine and oxycodone etc... are all one in the same meaning that they are all closely related and could not be without the other.

You are right incognito in your answer that oxycodone is derived straight from thebaine, but oxycodone can be derived semi synthecially from morphine. In all instances I thank you for raising this debate and would welcome more info and corrections on this subject.

Tramadol

Hi 717,

Not sure what you want to know here exactly but here are some experiential views of Tramadol.

  • Taken in larger than prescribed doses, it lowers your seizure threshold.  Keeping that in mind, I have stupidly far exceeded those doses and been lucky.
  • Their is nothing like an opiate buzz from taking them in normal or higher quantities.  Absolutely nothing.
  • Their time to onset in action is longer than opiates like codeine, hydrocodone, morphine, dilaudid, taking about 60-90 minutes.
  • I would say their effectiveness in relieving pain is no more than 800 mg Ibuprofen.
  • The pain-killing effects or side effects last much longer than opiates.  Perhaps 8-10 hours.
  • With exceeded doses, I have noticed urethral sphincter muscle effects and dribbling, clouding of hearing, nausea and vomiting.
  • There has been discussion on the alt.drugs.hard board that they may help relieve some opiate withdrawal effects and I have found them slightly helpful against hot/cold sweating, anxiety symptoms of w.d.
  • I don't know about being habit-forming (can't imagine ANYONE wanting to abuse them on a regular basis), but a tolerance to dosage is definite.

I hope this is some helpful.

Take Care, Stay Safe, God Bless,

Karen M.

Tramadol

Tramadol is very addicting. In recent years the DEA has reported increasing trends of Tramadol abuse particularly in people that have a past history of substance abuse. I personally take Tramadol and became addicted to them myself. In my opion as far as the difference in Tramadol and Hydrocodone is this:  When taken in larger doses than prescribed, Tramadol can create a euphoric state that is equal to and often exceeding that of Hydrocodone and other narcotics. This effect lasts about 8 house as opposed to say hydrocodone that for me, lasts only about one hour. I personally prefer Tramadol over any other narcotic because of the long lasting effects when taking 250mg or more. Also once Tramadol is in your system on a regular basis and exceeding the normal prescribing dosage, the euphoric effects tend to be almost equal to that of Oxycontin. This is just my personal experience with Tramadol however, some people have reported not "feeling" anything at all from taking Tramadol.

barbie,    I'm sorry you

barbie,

I'm sorry you are in this position.  There are numerous threads on this site that deal with tramadol, and addiction.  Possibly, too many threads that relate to tramadol.  As I'm sure you already know, tramadol is sometimes abused, despite it's unscheduled regulation.

I don't know of any other advice I can give, other than to say that I feel for you.

Here is a website that has been posted concerning opiate abuse and detoxing, take it for what it's worth.

My husband claims that there

My husband claims that there are 2 different types of Tramadol one with codine and one with out and the people on here must be taking the one with codine in it he says because the one that he takes will not do this to you.. I personally do not beleive a word that he tells me and I think that there is just one Tramadol and one only.. And yes its the one that he is abusing....

Thanks for all your thoughts...
