I’ve been off and on gabapentin since 2010. I have dealt with addiction for seven years. I know now I should of never been put on this med. at the time gabapentin wasn’t known for its exotic euphoria it gives you. I can’t be trusted with a lot how can I be trusted to wean. So I have klonopin. I figure just go thru the ???$* of withdrawals and be done with it.

There has never been a drug I’ve been more addicted to the gaba. So I have to make a choice to save myself grief in the future to come off of it.

The withdrawals are hot flashes. Cold sweats nightmares. Palpitations and anxiety. Seizures if I wasn’t on klonopin. So please help me guys I don’t know how else to stop this med.

 This medication is very,

This medication is very, very tricky to fully get an understanding of. Not only do medical research doctors still not have a thorough understanding of the precise mechanism of action that is responsible for Gabapentin's effects, it seems they can not even agree to disagree. The few things that seems to be universally accepted with the researchers is what it gabapentin is not, which flies in the face of anecdotal reports from far too many patients.

When I had a couple of months without my gabapentin, I can't say that I experienced any cold sweats, but my goodness, my skin literally felt like it was on fire. Thankfully, this went away after about 10 days, and was always noticeable during the night only. I may be one of the lucky ones, but aside from some extremely unpleasant mental confusion and uncoordination for the first few days while starting this medication, I never noticed any change in my mood or thoughts.

My personal opinion is that, for a drug that is still not completely understood, this drug is prescribed way too often, for way too many things. The FDA has only approved the use of Gabapentin for certain seizure disorders, and post-herpetic neuralgia, yet is prescribed off-label for every type of nerve pain imaginable. If I had to guess, I would conservatively estimate that at least  50% of patients treated by my pain group are prescribed gabapentin for nerve pain. I can safely estimate that 98% of us do not have post-herpetic neuralgia. I'm still looking for some articles, written by doctors, that addresses gabapentin and addiction, and will post them when/if I find them.

Before the storm

FrownI have to say Thank you to both the above posts.  I was told about Gaba from a freind who insists I ask for it from my doctor(s.)    I have not tried it yet and probably never will.    My freind was given it by a girlfrriend of his and he also obtained it from his doctor, all he had to do was ask.  This freind of mine called me from his girls house as he broke in to get some Gaba while she was awayoll.  He could not run out he said.Man breaking in a house just to get some???   Well needless to say if  stopped valium after 38 years the last thing I need in another "strung out run "on anything.

When I was first put on it in

When I was first put on it in 2008 I had the worst anxiety possible. The docs and the ward knew I was a recovering drug addict so they would not prescribe klonopin or anything else. When I first took it all it did was make me talk a lot and I felt spaced pout. In 2009 I couldn’t deal with the anxiety I was having so I started to buy Xanax off the streets.

When I ran out I found out by accident that gabapentin masks the withdrawals and gave its own nice euphoria. Today I don’t abuse benzos. Ugh I hate the way they make me feel. Gabapentin tho gives me energy and stamina. It helps my social anxiety and stuff like that. But after taking your normal dose for awhile the side effects start to wear off and that’s where you get in trouble by abusing it. It has been almost a ten yr affair that I have no clue how to stop it other that tie myself to a bed and go through withdrawals.

`BENZO STOPPAGE

Stopping a benzo can be done.  After 36 years (or more)of diazepam my doctor decided to wean me off starting a full year ago.  It took till last month and everyday I want a Valium.  I dream about them everynight and I do not go out unless I drink,  and I do not like drinking so I stay in.I realy don't know how to act around people.  Most of the time I am so unhappy but find a bit of happy times in playing guitar,so I bought a new LP and a big amp and play. But I do not know if I will ever be cool with stopping the Vs.  But it can be done, as far as the withdrawals I guess I made it,so you can also.                     Good luck and believe.

Rocker Dan, I'm glad I'm not

Rocker Dan, I'm glad I'm not the only one who has the dreams where I am back on Klonopin. I was on Klonopin (or Xanax xr) for roughly half the time you were on it, and to this day, I am miserable and reclusive. I can't imagine being on it 36 years and stopping so abruptly. Props to you for being able to handle it.

I'll admit, there are days where I literally feel like I am one stupid comment from someone away from having a full-fledged break down. The worst part is that I have a doctor who flat out stated "you're pre-hypertensive and I need to make sure you are on your nerve medication." Then, the same doctor refers me to yet another "specialist" because he can't bring himself to actually prescribe anything. And Gabapentin? For anxiety? Please. GabaA and GabaB are responsible for completely different mechanisms within the brain. For me, Gabapentin does absolutely nothing for anxiety, and tends to just make me mad because it fails to meet my expectations.

All of that aside, doctors don't realize that patients need this medication to avoid feeling a certain way, as opposed to feeling a certain way. Sorry to rant, I'm just feeling extra angry tonight I guess.
