Howdy.   Recently had dental work, and was on a course of percocet 7.5.  No other meds, so I know this was the only difference for those 4 or 5 days.  When the pain was bad, I was taking 1 pill every 4-6 hours,  the really awful times the first 2 days I would take 1 and a half pill every 3.5 hours.

I know this wasnt my imagination, but during the few really bad times, I found that I would have generalized itching.  At first it seemed my back was itchy then my nose or arms, just random areas.  When I was feeling better, and had been off the perc., nothing.  Taking the pills caused the itchiness, even though the Dentist said that it was pretty rare.  Possible, but rare.

Anybody else have this issue?    (Or just feel itchy while reading this  =}  )

Itching from Percoset

Hey Carlos...What you experienced is from the drug.  I have in the past experienced it when taking a narcotic I wasn't use to taking.  I disagree with your Dentist though, I don't think it's all that uncommon.  After you get use to the drug (if you're on it more than a few days) the itching goes away.

itching goes away??/Tolerance

Well, I'm off of the pills, but now I'm curious... so if I had had to take the percs for longer, would I have gotten used to the narcotics and that is why the itchiness would have gotten better?   Or, would I have needed to take a bigger dose of the meds, like 2 pills instead of 1 or 1.5, thus guaranteeing the itchiness again?

Would I have gotten tolerant of the medicine THAT quickly?  How fast does it go?

Ha, thats so true! Thats all

Ha, thats so true! Thats all i can think about when i see someone rubbing the palm of their hand on their nose. Fortunatly that went away for the most part after I built a tolerence.

possibly allergic to something in the percs

i was in the hospital july 2nd for surgery and they gave me morphine and when i woke up it was because i was scratching my chest and my arms,my legs, face you name it...they said it was a little bit of an allergic reaction possibly and lowered my dose- i also had taken darvocet before and had an even worse itching fit and the doctor said i was allergic and had to stop taking it.....?

I don't know if that means

I don't know if that means you are allergic, but I also had the same thing. Alot of people I know who have taken pain pills end up itching, especially on their nose.

Tolerance does not build quick. I've heard of some people building a tolerance in a month or two, but my doctor told me last i was there that is takes about 3-6 months to build tolerance. He was not talking about a major tolerance, just that my dose would not work as well, and I would need to take 1 more, or double the dose that I was taking. Don't worry about the tolerance.

I find it to be pretty

I find it to be pretty common actually. Other people i know itch as well, usually starting with the nose then spreading throughout the face. Nothing major, just feels like a feather is constantly being waved on your face. I dont think you really have anything to worry about, just a common side effect.

I have to agree with the

I have to agree with the core here.  Itching from taking opiate based meds is very common.  I would say itching of the nose can be more common of abuse but this isn't really always the case.  If the itching is painful and turning you all red you could be allergic.  Itching def. goes away with time but can still occur if you take high doses.  It is very a interesting phenomena and a lot of drug users actually enjoy it.

Itchiness

I seem to remember reading that the itch problem has something to do with your body releasing more than normal histamine. I may be wrong bit it makes sense to me         I am not a doctor or health profesional and all posts by me are for disscusions purposes  only

Antihistamines are prescibed

Antihistamines are prescibed to help with this occasionally so that def. could be the case.  They are however a little contraindicated as they cause drowsiness and cns depression.

Itchiness--as in OTC anti~histamines??

If this were to happen again, would a good idea be to suggest to the Doctor something like benadryl?  Or would I just bring up the possible allergy and let him decide?   Now, of course, I'm more trusting of you good people than some docs since my dentist thought this was rare?

I know the itchiness was not my imagination because once my few days of the percocets were over, the itchiness subsided within 24 hours or so.   Thanks.

O, and to the person who said that some people like the nose itchiness was that a joke?

Carlos,Not to be rude by any

Carlos,

Not to be rude by any means, but if it's just going to be for a couple of days worth of taking the medication, I'd just simply deal with it.

preach on

the itchiness, especially in a limited use basis such as dental work, is a very common side effect and one seen alot in people who are first timers or abusers, not saying or implying in any way that you are an abuser so please don't read that into my rant, when i had my first back surgery at age 17 they had me on dilaudid drip, i itched so bad that i unconsciously scratched myself all-over pulled off my pants and undies and was covered in scratch marks, the docs +interns making their rounds in the morning got a good laugh, they subsequently lowered me to morphine. anyone who knows Dr Gary Rhea in Columbus,Ohio he put this humpty back together and did a great job, without him i would've never walked again. i was a poor kid and he did it for free, he is a saint. sorry to be completely off subject but boredom does that at times. you are way too kind thanks for listening

Usually if you bring this up

Usually if you bring this up to your Doctor or Pharmacist they will suggest you either take a lower dose, or use an OTC anti-histamine such as the benadryl you suggested. But be forewarned anti-histamines are a potentiator to opiates.(Increase the side effects, mostly sedation) Im not positive but I think an anti-histamine containing ointments will not do this, either will the non-drowsy drugs like allegra, zyrtec, and claritin.

ill post wat i know about

ill post wat i know about this, ok well, both me and my brother was prescribed anti histamines while in the hospital for morphine and w.e else we was on, secondly. i dont know where i read it but i know its true, that potent opiods like mophine, some do and some dont im not sure on which ones do, but morphine, causes a release of histamine, which i believe that is why they use anti histamine, and the histamine would bring up allergy like symptoms i would assume.

Spam Filter

Sorry brodank,

We are having trouble with our spam filter. The other morning we had several disgusting spam postings that the filter didn't catch. So we may have overcompensated by adding many words that are used in ordinary conversations as well as in spam postings.

I'll delete your duplicate posts and mark the one post as 'not spam'.

I apologize. Several people have complained in the last couple of days, and I regret the inconvenience. But we can't tolerate spam. Next step is probably captcha which will really be inconvenient for our posters.

Please try posting again in about an hour. And let me know if you have any more problems. Thank you.

Yes opioids cause the

Yes opioids cause the release histamine. This is most common in Morphine and Codeine. It is less common in semi-synthecis like hydrocodone, oxycodone, hydromorphone etc.It is even less common in completely synthetic drugs like fentanyl, but there are reports that it still happens. As to why it happens, Im not 100%, but I think it has something to do with mast cells that store histamine are triggered by opiates.
