Klonopin vs. Xanax
Hello everyone, I have recently started taking xanax for panic attacks, and so far it helps a little.
Can someone tell me what the differences between Xanax and Klonopin are? Someone told me that Klonopin was much better, or more effective.
Thanks.
Why do you think he said that Klonopin is safer?
<the top post was right...Alprzolam can be rough on the body and klonopin is much cleaner. with out intensives side affects like "blacking out"

Where do you find that information?

I agree with your doctor that klonapin is 'safer' than xanax. Klonapin seems to be abused less. Because klonapin has a slower onset of action and a more sustained effect you don't have the same rapid relief from anxiety that can lead to overuse of Xanax. Similar to why sustained release narcotics are 'safer' than immediate release.
The main reason is the slower onset which causes less euphoria or a high. As I said klonopin is more like an extended release med whereas xanax has a quick onset. Xanax CR has been found to have less severe side effects as Xanax and they don't make a klonopin CR. Klonopin can be abused but isn't abused nearly as much as xanax. Both can cause memory impairment but I would say xanax is more severe. You really would want to talk to your doctor about this, but klonopin has less severe side effects as far as I know.

I would have to say that ER narcotics are more likely to be abused than IR narcotics. When taken properly both should be equally as safe, actually IR meds would be safer because they are low dose and do not usually cause accidental overdose. ER meds are for people with opiate tolerance and are much more dangerous because a lot of people don't know about the medicines.

I would have to disagree about the abuse of Klonopin. Where I live (Detroit area) Klonopin is fastly taking over the number one spot for the most sought after benzo. Anyone I talk to that I know is a Xanax abuser is actively seeking Klonopin on the streets and from docs. I dont think doctors are just yet aware that people are abusing them so much, because they used to be reserved for seizures and severe anxiety and not just generalized anxiety.
xanax & klonopin. they are both benzos and very similar in every way. as far as which is "better"- thats a matter of opinion. basically xanax you can pop if you feel a panic attack coming on... while klonopin generally is taken, for example, once every morning to help in preventing the possibility of a panic attack from even coming on in the first place.
I am surprised to hear this. The number of tablets dispensed for a patient on klonapin is usually 60 (bid dosing), whereas Xanax is 120 or more (qid dosing + prn). I would have thought more product = more sales. I can understand the shift in demand from Xanax to Klonapin because of increasing resistance to prescribing Xanax for chronic anxiety disorders.

Clonazepam and xanax are both benzodiazapines. Klonopin is said to be approx. half the strengh of xanax. However, klonopin lasts longer and is metabolized slower in the body. Klonopin is directed in the use of seizure disorders and panic attacks. I actually saw a doctor today that believes klonopin is much safer and better for you than xanax. Xanax is not so much prescribed for seizure disorders, just anxiety and panic attacks. So the two drugs are similar but klonopin has a slower onset of action but lasts longer-almost like an extended release med. Xanax IR has a quick onset but doesn't last as long unless you take the CR formula (which has a slower onset). Both effect GABA, a neurotransmitter associated with inhibition.
