Meprobamate, Miltown and Equanil. Is this Soma a safer prodrug of this one?

I've just posted my latest contribution to the image contributions and have a few questions that maybe a few of you may answer.  First of all I know that Meprobamate is basically very rarely prescribed if at all but for a few countries.  I know at one time it was used as an anti-anxiety med and muscle relaxant that was non-barbituate so therefore much safer, but it still had some issues with abuse (not 100% sure), therefore rarely prescribed anymore.

Meprobamate

Just click the image and it will open a new window with a larger picture and details on it here at Pharmer.org

I've heard its basically what soma turns into once its in your body, and it kind of has the same effect except soma just knocks me out usually, whereas the meprobamate did the same thing for my back but didnt really make me too groggy.

Just wondering if anybody is, or has had this prescribed and if it really is basically what your body makes into Soma/Carisporidal...why not just eliminate the Soma and use Meprobamate.   Also, am I wrong about the abuse when mixed with opiates or is this a different drug.  I just thought this was a rather interesting class of drugs that is not too popular but very effective at both anxiety relief and muscle relaxing!

Thanks in advance,

Acey

You may get more responses if

You may get more responses if you include the U.S. names of Miltown and Equanil, those are the common trade names for meprobamate here. And yes you are correct inreguards to abuse and Soma metabolism. People would mix meprobamate and opiates/opioids to get an illegal drug like high. Similar to the abuse of Doriden with Codeine (4's and Doors) or Somas with Codeine (Soma Set).

Illegal drug...

like high...Vicodin+Soma referred to as  a "Las Vegas Cocktail."

That was me functioning as an urban dictionary.

This minor tranquilizer and the barbituates have been largely replaced by the benzodiazepines due the safety profile. Theraputic index for Miltown, and barbituates is very low...

P.S. For those of you who've read A. Huxleys Brave New World, "Soma" certainly is an interesting trade name for a medication of this class, wouldn't you say?

P.S.S. Soma could be considered a prodrug of Meprobamate.

Ahh okay yah

Good point both of you guys, thanks for sharing!

"The Las Vegas Cocktail".... I get wobbly really quickly if I take an extra pill or even half someties!

I watched one Intervention, where this girl had what she thought to be an incurable disease that put her in so much pain that she was on such strong meds she would be nodding out.  I specifically remember a scene where she says she is going to take her 2 somas and Oxy or whatever it was before she went to a family function and she literallly lost her legs and collapsed!

So if Soma is a prodrug of Meprobamate then, these both can probably be easily overdone!

yeah

Thats what I remember hearing about!  A different drug from the same family?

Solo, when you said the term "4's and Doors", it reminded me about reading about....funny how that slipped  by the FDA.

Thats right, it was Doriden that I remember hearing abuses when taken with a Tylenol #4!  Crazy, as well as a lot of OD's.

I think Doriden was a non-barbiturate, non benzodiazepine, sedative used as a "safe non addicting alternative!" Foot in mouth
