Does anyone who takes opiates, particularly hydrocodone," thats all that I take," experience dry mouth and the feeling of thirstyness and feel dehydrated? Also does anyone have stomach pains or cramps from taking these meds. If so do you know what to do to lessen these side effects, Im sure probably drink more water huh? Ive been told I drink tooo much coca cola. I usually drink a glass of water with my pills and drink juice and coke through the day. Does anyone know how much coke would be considered harmful per day. I usually drink abt 6 to 8 cans per day, and I have cut out my alchohol comsumption completely since im taking hydros. Thanx

I don't know how much

I don't know how much Coca-Cola is safe for consumption on an average day.  That being said, it can't be good for your teeth.  Personally, I limit my cola intake to 1, 20oz Diet Mt. Dew during the day, and then drink flavored water like, Propel, throughout the day.  I don't eat a whole lot, so I get some of my daily required vitamins and minerals this way.

Your stomach cramps could be due to a lot of things.  If you take more than, or close to, 4000mg of tylenol you might experience cramps, but that would be more because of your liver than your stomach.

If you are not getting near that much tylenol troughout the day, maybe try adding a non-stimulant laxative, something like Sennacot or it's generic.  As for the dryness, I've always heard that x*#&ing a sugar free hard candy can help.  Make sure it's sugar free though.  If you're drinking 6-8 cans of cola a day, x*#&ing on a sugar candy will only make your teeth deteriorate faster.

Remember though, I'm in no way a doctor, pharmacist, or anything else medical.  I read medical journals and the likes during my spare time.  So, take this information and do with it as you please.

No . I take anywhere from

No . I take anywhere from abt 700 to2500mgs of tylenol everyday in my hydros. My stomach pain is usually when I wake up in the morning and also my back hurts on either side where my kidneys are. Where would the pain be if your liver is hurting? Also I seem to have trouble urinating usually first thing in the morning, like my bladder wont empty out completley. I also take a multivitamin, and a B2, and garlic pills. I just always feel dehydrated. Thanx for your time and info.

Trouble urinating can be a side effect of narcotics.  Assuming you are a male with a healthy prostate, your urinary problems may be caused by your pain meds.

Also, I know that with a kidney stone, you get the pain you are talking about.  Have you had stones in the past?  When I was trying to pass a stone about 6 months ago, I was having the same issue you are talking about.

The way you describe the dehydrated feeling, the back pain (vaguely) near the kidney area, for some reason really makes me think that you might have a kidney problem going on.  I am in no way a doctor, pharmacist, nurse, etc, etc, etc.  The only reason I am posting about this is because I have a family member who is on dialysis, as well as another family member with Polycistic Kidney Disease.  I, in no way, think that you have any of these conditions.  However, I think it would be worth your while to go to your doctor and tell the about these issues.  You might want to ask about having some blood drawn just to rule out the possibility of kidney problems.  At least, this is what I would do if I were in your shoes.

Yes I do think I should

Yes I do think I should probably get some bloodwork done just to see if anythings going on, and I cant beleive ive never had that done. I do think its got something to do with the narcotics, cause i dont think I had this before. I also noticed sometimes that I feel like ive been run over by a mack truck when i wake up with full body pain, until i take my hydros, its scary like I cant even function day to day life without these meds.I know I cant keep thisup forever. I just feel so bad without them, so I just keep takin em.

dancin bear,    When you

dancin bear,

When you get your lab work done, please let us know.  I'm not trying to scare you in any way, shape, or form.  I just know that you have describe, almost verbatim, the symptoms that a relative of mine had prior to being diagnosed with PKD.  PKD is actually a rare disease, so at least you have that on your side.  I'm not in the medical field, so take my "opinions" and do with them as you wish.  I think your mind will at least be at ease once you know what is causing this pain.

potential Cramping answer

I dont know what to say about the dry mouth but if the cramps are the next day they could be from slight withdrawls.  Opiats make you constipated so the next day an opposite effect happens i.e. you get diarrea but before this happens you can experience semi to severe cramps. So if its the next day your probably becoming tolerant and should try to wein down as soon as your pain is manable w/o meds.

all thoughts and opinions expressed are my own and should not be mistaken for medical advice. i am not a doctor nor a pharmacist. all medical questions should be answered by a licensed pharmacist, doctor, or primary care manager.

You may have developed a

You may have developed a dependancy on the hydrocodone.  If you need them for severe pain, ask your doctor for a long acting medication so you don't wake up feeling sick because the hydrocodone wore off during the night.  If you are taking them to avoid the side effects of not taking them, and not for severe pain, you should probably get off of narcotics.

Excessive thirst and dry

Excessive thirst and dry mouth can be a sign of diabetes, especially if you are drinking a lot of juice and pop with sugar in it.  Diabetes is very common.  There can be other metabolic diseases that can cause your symptoms.  Please make an appointment to see your doctor.
