I was just wondering if any of you have ever had bad experiences using different pharmacies?

It seems like I have the worst luck of all when it comes to getting prescriptions filled. I have had pharmacies to loose my information, pharmacists to refuse refilling my meds, as well as pharmacists just being plain out hateful.

On one occasion, I dropped off a prescription for 110 pills at a Walmart Pharmacy. I only picked up 60 tablets due to the price but was given a partial refill for the remanding pills. A few days later I decided to pick up the remanding pills and the pharmacist told me that she could not refill it until the "days supply" was up, which was 13 days away. This prescription was not a narcotic or even a controlled substance at all. So, I asked her if it was their policy not to provide my with the partial refill until the days were up especially since I only got half of the original  prescription by choice. She just refused to do it.

On another occasion, I dropped of a prescription of 90 tablets at a different walmart pharmacy and when I called to see if it was ready to be picked up, the pharmacist got on the phone and was very rude and hateful to me. He said that I had picked up multiple prescriptions for this medication in the past, (this was not a narcotic or controlled substance!). I told him that  had been taking this medication for about a year now so yes I have prescriptions that have been filled in the past. Well, he said that he called the doctors office and the doctor cancelled the prescription. I was furious! I immediately went to the doctors office to see what was going on since I had just seen the doctor earlier in the day. The doctor wasen't there but the nurse took me into an office and told me that the pharmacist called and make it sound like to them that I had been obtaining multiple prescriptions for this medication in the past year and that I may be abusing the medication. The doctors office decided to cancel the prescription based on that. I have considered suing the pharmacise because I have had to change doctors because of this and it has caused me alot of stress.

I am just wondering if any one else has expirenced trouble with pharmacies or pharmacists of any kind?

I have definitely had bad

I have definitely had bad experiences with different pharmacies. I live in a small town, and have to go out of town to get my scripts filled.. for awhile, I didn't have insurance, and the pharmacies treated me bad.. I remember calling in to see how much something would be, and the woman said ''too much for you, honey.'' and then laughed a little.. I remember thinking to myself, wow..how utterly rude. Now that I have insurance it's gotten a little better, but not a lot. I don't know if it has something to do with my appearance, because I'm a flat out hippie chick.. so I assume that THEY assume that I'm just trying to get messed up or something.. eh. But yes, I know where you're coming from. I wish that weren't the case, however, because sometimes they are so hateful I want to cry.

wal-mart

I have not had this exact experience however I have had negative experiences at walmart pharmacies multiple times and now refuse to use wal mart at all. Once I transferred a rx to walmart and they wouldnt fill it for a week after since my insurance said it had not been enough time because it had been rebilled after the date i received the meds, they would not even let me pay the cash price. Another time, they couldnt re-bill my insurance cause they didnt know how so I had to bill ins. myself and another time I got the third degree refilling my clonazepam early (w/ my dr.'s approval) and my dr. had to call THREE separate times to tell them to release my meds! Another time, at walgreens, my next least favorite pharmacy, they called my dr. about my oxycodone rx and said that I had filled multiple narcotics at other pharmacies and I had to go see him and get a signed note by him telling the pharmacist to release the rx. The reason I had other narcs is they were hydrocodone products which he and his team had prescribed that I could not take due to a stomach sensitivity. I have found, at least in my area, that Albertsons/Sav-On pharmacy is by far the best. They have never questioned any rx's or refills, they will match any other pharmacies price, and always have my rx ready in about 10 minutes. I have been going there exclusively now for about 3 months unless I have to got to a 24hr pharmacy in which case I must deal with the evilness at walgreedys or rite-aid. Also, jenniferlynn, what drug is it (if you dont mind me asking) that you have been having problems filling? And if it is not at narcotic or controlled substance, than why might they think it has potential for abuse and that you might be abusing it. Do you have rx's from many different dr's as well? Just curious and wanting to help. I would avoid walmart in the future if I were you, they seem to hire idiots and be very unorganized in their pharmacies. Best of luck and sorry to ramble.

I finally found a decent

I finally found a decent pharmacy, it's privately owned.. so they're a little more considerate with your personal feelings as opposed to walmart. I refuse to go to walmart for anything, especially meds.

After my step-brother passed away I was prescribed to xanax to help calm me down, and it was stolen at work.. I had to file all these police reports and what not.. the pharmacist at Walgreens flat out accused me of selling them, and called my doctor's office to try and get them to drop me. Thankfully I know my doctor very well outside of his office, he's been like a father to me practically my entire life.. and he pretty much put her in her place. I got my script refilled, and never went back to that pharmacy again. I just can't believe some of the stories I've heard about pharmacists.. I mean, yeah, there are people who are dishonest or just addicted.. but not everyone's like that, so to treat everyone like that is just wrong. Gah.

Privately owned pharmacies

I have also found that many privately owned, mom and pop, and other small pharmacies usually have much better service than the big chain stores. They are often much quicker, are willing to help out much more w/ ins., and are generally friendlier than big chains. I will always use these as opposed to rite-aid, walgreens, walmart etc. The worst by far though is costco pharmacy. I have also had meds stolen and had to get a police report and the pharmacist thought I was abusing the meds so he told me dr. who gave me ultracet vs. the percocet that was stolen, I never even took a single tab before it went missing. Big thanks to the pharmacist at rite aid who scared my dr. into giving me ultracet, big difference compared to percocet. I changed drs after that and have been with the same PCP for over a year now and we have an awesome dr-patient-pharmacy relationship with Sav-on pharmacy. I have such a trusting relationship with her that she has no problem writing rx's that I suggest after talking to the pharmacy, some she didnt even nkow existed. Bottom line=stay clear of walmart and I think youll find yourself better off.

Pharmacy Trouble

JPX, The medication that I take is Ultram. I know that it is not considered a narcotic but it can be addicting. However, as of now, it is yet to be scheduled or controlled in any way by the DEA. For this reason, I don't think that pharmacies should be allowed to refuse to fill Rx's.

The second time that I used Walmart 9a different one from the first time), The pharmacist just flat out refused to fill the Rx. So, I called Walgreens to have the prescription transferred to them and they called me back and said that Walmart refused to transfer the prescription to them because they said that I needed to call them before it could be released. When I called Walmart back, the pharmacist got on the line and said that he had called my Dr and the doctor cancelled the Rx. I was furious because I had just seen the Dr. earlier that day and was given 5 refills so that I would not have to be seen again for 6 months.

I have thought alot about sueing this pharmacist for doing this because I have had to change doctors since then and everything else but I don't know if I can or not. Does anyone have any info on this?

I'm sure you could bring a suit against the pharmacy, but who knows how far it would go.  They probably have laws that protect them from this sort of situation, and I've heard that they can "reserve the right" to refuse service due to suspicious behavior or simply by reviewing records.  Which, if that's true, I think that's a load of you-know-what.  Especially if your doctor approves it.  But I would say go for it, if you think that's the right course of action.  Soley my opinion.

I've actually only had problems with one Wal-Mart, but it was because of a mistake on my doctor's part.  He wrote "Lortab 10/325", instead of Norco 10/325, so they told me it had to be either Lortab 10/500 or Norco 10/325.  So even after the Dr. approved it over the phone, they still would not fill it unless I went back to get a new prescription.  Understandable, I guess, but CVS ended up filling it anyway, no questions asked.  The other Wal-Mart that I use now has always been courteous and there are never any questions asked.  Lucky me from the sound of it.

Walgreens, on the other hand, I will never go back to unless I need a 24-hour fill.  When my back specialist referred me to a chiropractor, he said that the chiro would take over filling my meds.  Unfortunately, my chiro appt. was 32 days after my specialist visit, so I had one day without meds.  So when I went to Walgreens with the new prescription, they said they could not fill it till the following day because it was a new doctor.  I had them call the chiro so he could explain, and they still would not fill it.  So when I asked for my rx back, she grabbed it and wrote "Too soon until" then whatever the next day's date was--then handed it to me with a sneer on her face.  No othe pharmacy would fill it that day after that, so what did I do?  I went it there at midnight (12:05 a.m. to be exact) and got it filled.  I think I would rather sit in agony now before going to Walgreens again.  Sorry for writing a novel, but I thought I would share a couple of my experiences.

Htallow

I also have has the same problem with Walgreen's. I needed to get a refill once on the Tramadol and they refused to fill it until the next day also, which brings me to a new question.

A lot of pain management doctors supply a patient with more than one prescription. Usually a two months supply. One rx is available to fill immediately and they "the drs" usually wrote "do not fill until" on the other one. That is a decision made by the Dr not the pharmacist.

So, question is, do pharmacists have the right to absolutley refuse to fill or refill a rx that does not specify a "do not fill date" by the Dr? It seems that they refuse with or without that noted on the Rx.

I have also experienced pharmacists refusing to fill my Rx and when I would try to transfer them to another pharmacy that would, the pharmacist would tell them that its too early and refuse to release the Rx to them. Do they have the right to refuse releasing a Rx?

Also, does anyone know of a website that has the specific "policies" for pharmacists and what they can and can not do?

Thanks everyone!

One thing that needs to be kept in mind in regards to this statement, and thread as a whole, prescribing laws are largely left up to the state. So rules and regulations can/will vary.

i would reccomend that

i would reccomend that anyone looking for individual states policy simply go to their respective states website.

i know TN has a link on their site that will inform patients of regulations.

all thoughts and opinions expressed are those of my own and should not be mistaken for medical advice. i am not a doctor nor a pharmacist. all medical questions should be answered by a licensed pharmacist, doctor, or primary care manager.

Pharmacists

Phisher, I took your advice and went to the Virginia State website. There I found information on recent laws and regulations of pharmacies and pharmacists.

Also, I was very surprised to find a link that contained records of displinary action against pharmacists by the Board Of Pharmacy.

I was able to read all of the pharmacists in Virginia that have ever been reprimanded by the board as well as view the actual order at the hearing. Several pharmacists lost their licence for mistakes in filling prescriptions of sechedual 1 and 2 substances as well as some were reprimanded for filling prescriptions that were forged, altered, or illegal. I was unaware that a pharmacist would get in trouble for filling rx's that someone forged and presented to the pharmacy.

I think that it is very helpful that we as customers can view information on our pharmacists past violations.
