I am writing this because even I can only stop one person from going on Klonopin then I will be happy. I have very bad anxiety and panic disorder... After my first panic attack, I did not leave my house for over a month. Actually I did not really even leave my room. I tried taking Klonopin and within ten minutes I was walking around feeling completely normal as if I had never felt anxious in my life. After about one year of being on Klonopin, I began to feel extremely tired, dizzy and nausous. I THEN REALIZED THAT KLONOPIN IS NOT MEANT FOR LONG TERM USE! My anxiety came back completely!! This so called magical drug was not helping anything anymore but only making me feel like ???$*. I was so sick from the med that I had to quit my job and take a medical leave from my University that I attend. Nice waste of 8,000 for that quarter of school. I have not gotten near the worse part... once my doctor realized that Klonopin was the reason why i was very sick, THE WEANING OFF KLONPIN PROCESS BEGUN!!! One word: ???$*. I was put on seroquel to help alleviate the withdrawal from getting off klonopin. The withdrawal symptoms from Klonopin are insomnia (no big deal) but here are the fun ones.. unable to walk due to lack of be able to feel your own body or muscles, EXTREME painful tightening feeling in the stomach as if someone threw bricks at your stomach, nausea, depression, crying spells, anger, isolation from everyone. I have been off this horrible drug for three months now and I am still not back to normal, Klonopin side effects can linger for years. DO NOT TAKE KLONOPIN, IT IS DANGEROUSLY ADDICTIVE!
I then went on paxil and have gained 20 pounds in three months even though I am a runner and I eat very healthy. DOes anyone have an answer for me? I need a medication that treats severe anxiety and panic disorder but that does not cause weight gain! I have mever felt depressed in my life, but this weight gain from paxil makes me feel pretty sad.
HMMM, Okay yeah you are right lots of meds are addicting but benzo's are pretty much the worst. Hey do you know of any SSRI that does not cause weight gain like paxil does??
same dose of xanax for like 6 years.......i was on zoloft for a long while and didnt notice weight gain thats a major myth on ssris...like 17 percent have weight gain i believe on ssris...prozac and zoloft made me feel energized and with not much appetite.
I am not a Dr. I just play one on tv.
Try valium. Grow up. What do you think benzo's are a joke. I know people who have been on this for years and nothing like you talked about the only reason I got off it is that valium didnt knock me out like klono. Why would you insult a drug whom has helped change peoples lives and your experiance was bad. Thanks for the info but no way would my people leave that drug.
I agree with tydyed 100%. That drug saved my life. I have been on it for 20yrs and was 34 when I started on it. Had 2 small children and could not leave the house, felt like I was having a heart attack All the symptoms you that have severe panic disorder know all too well. Just because a med does not work for one person (ANY MED) does not mean that it has not helped thousands of others.I have Xanaz PRN for panic attacks that come on quickly, but this girl could and would not be able to live a normal life without klonopin.Unless your a doctor, I, in my opinion do not think you should tell anyone to stay away from any medication. No disrespect intended, just my thoughts and experience.Nancie
I feel the same way as the others. Krissy, just because your situation did not work out in the end does not mean that you should discourage others from taking that medication. I am sure you have heard that everybody's results and reactions can very and I can bet you that just as many people have had great results than bad ones. And I would also bet that at least one person on this website has had a great improvement in life from this drug. I was put on klon and felt nothing, no negative results and no benefits but my friend who was also put on klon has had great results giving her a better life. Of course benzos are addictive, so are Narcotics, Sleeping aids, but there is no way you can say benzos are more addictive than the other. I'm sorry you are not back to 100% and I hope that you soon find the proper medication for your situation.
I believe klonopin is a very good/effective drug. I take the medication daily and have so for 2 plus years and its still very effective. The only thing about long term useage of klonopin is tolerence issues ive had my dosage up'd two or three times but I have no complaints. Also you have to remember drugs react differently in every individual.
Have you heard of diet and exercise, I have heard they work pretty well.
Tydye, do you realize that valuim is also a benzo???? Some one needs to do some reading!!!!
m not sure if you meant valium saved your life of if kpins saved you life?? Do You know that Valium are the most addictive benzo out there. Thats why they are not prescribed much anymore..Sorry NAN

I was just wondering was there any reason your doctor wanted you off of benzos? He didn't need to "wean" you off klon. (By the way that takes months or years depending how long you were on the med.) He could have just switched you to another benzo like xanax or ativan for ex. I was switched from klon to ativan because it wasn't working. It saved my life. Klonopin isn't really approved for use as an anti-anxiety pill outside the US because it is not as effective as other benzos in treating anxiety. You should look into getting a different doctor. Also clexea or lexapro (same thing) is a great SSRI that has not caused any weight gain for me. Also a psych. Dr. is the only type of doctor that should be rx'ing those meds. Often PCP's do without knowing a darn thing about them or how to adminster them. Plus I assume you are seeing one if you have those diagnosis. Also Blu 42 I hope your not really a nurse because I've read quite a few of your posts and most of the time you don't give correct advice.

I never mentioned valium. The only time I took it was short term for muscle spasms after my cervical spine surgery.Worked fine for that. Klnopin is what saved my life (so to speak) as it has given me my quality of life back. Not sure who you are responding too,Hope all is well, Nancie
Clonopin is scheduled as an 8 hour medication for anxiety & seizures (the latter at a higher dosage). Unfortunately 8 hour medications can cause drowsiness as their half life is longer than other benzos (xanax, ativan, valium). No benzo classed med is non-addictive. However, to treat anxiety & panic you would need a quicker acting med with a short half life; ie: a 4 hour med. Xanax Ativan & Valium are all 4 hour medications. I myself take xanax and have since 1991 & have tried all of the available ones in this classification. Xanax works for me, Ativan for others, etc.
Every benzo has terrible withdrawl symptoms. Due to the longer acting Clonopin (Klonazopam), it takes longer to pass this medication (and its affect) though the urine...where all benzos are removed from one's body. If you are having anxiety, I would take a shorter & faster acting medication vs Clonopin. Also, I would only take them 'as needed' vs routinely. Due to chemical exposure, I have physiological anxiety which is much different from standard anxiety which originates in the brain.
So yes, one can take them for more than 4 months, I have for 17 years. However your case is clearly different from mine. If you must have a benzo, ask your doctor for a 4 hour medication & take them 'as needed' (as in only when necessary) & you will avoid a lot of the withdrawls you had from the Clonopin.
Clonopin is a good med, its just seems to be the wrong chemical compound for you. There will be some chemical dependancy on any med that is a benzodiazopine to some degree related to how frequently you take the medication. You should never 'quit' a benzo, always taper down over at least a month or longer, it makes it easier.
There are meds for depression related anxiety such as Tramadol which is not a benzo. Another medication that might work is Buspar. Paxil & Zyprexa are similar to the Tramadol only without the weight gain. (I went from 200 to 295lbs in less than 5 months on zyprexa) so I know what you are talking about regarding the weight gain.
Bottom line, take whatever knowledge you can google, take nodoby's advice as the rule, and always ask your physician and keep him honestly informed about how the meds affect you and you and your care provider will be able to find something that works for you... its not Clonopin or anxiety. Something will help you.
Again, always take online posts as suggestions, but you should only follow your pysicians orders over online suggestions as everyone's biochemistry is different. Medications don't 'cure' everything in these types of cases, they are meant to simply improve your quality of life. If is don't help you then speak with your physician and find something that does work, Never give up fighting fot what will help you.
I just wanted to make some corrections. Valium is not a 4 hour med it has a half life of 20-100 hours if i remember correctly. Also ativan has a half life similar or closer to clonazepam than to xanax. Also tramadol is a synthetic opiate that has some effects on seratonin but that doesnt make it an antidepressant like paxil.Other than that stuff I do agree with you that the shorter acting meds taken as needed are better in the long run becaus eyou wont build up a dependency as mucha s if you were to take it on a regular basis.
that many people can get by for years on the same dose...just saw my psych and we talked about the subject...he said my dose of xanax was close to his limit..i take 4 mg a day...for the last 5 years or so...and before that it was 3mg a day for many years....some days i take less...some days i need a extra one or 2...i have them...works great for me/////////and its kept me out of trouble.
I am not a Dr. I just play one on tv.
Anxiety is a horrible disability to have and benzodiazepines are a horrible thing to withdrawl from. The key is to only use benzos when you are having a panic attack or similar episode. I know on MY bottle it says to take AS NEEDED. If you take them regularly every day you will quickly build a dependency which is harder to kick than an opiate addiction as far as the type of physical and mental symptoms of withdrawl not to mention how long said withdrawls last! But if taken occasionally when needed to control or stop an episode, benzos are a miracle drug- otherwise the FDA would not still permit their availability through the prescription drug market ever since the 50's. My prayers go out to all those dealing with a benzo addiction and I urge you to talk to your doctor about weaning off of them and maybe finding something comparable to help with whatever symptoms led you to benzo use in the first place.

"Do you know that valium are the most addictive benzo out there. Thats why they are not prescribed much anymore"
You should really not comment if you are going to post misleading information. That is you opinion on the situation with no evidence to support you claim. By the way, valium is still being prescibed a lot these days. For example, my father is prescibed valium for vertigo spells that he gets.
i was waiting for someone.
Flunitrazepam is considered to be one of the most addictive benzodiazepines, and its effects are estimated to be 7-10 times more powerful than diazepam. It is currently considered to be an illegal drug in the United States and is not approved for medical use. Flunitrazepam is marketed in many other countries by Roche as Rohypnol®. Its use produces many side effects, among them drowsiness, loss of motor control, amnesia, slurred speech, and confusion. Flunitrazepam has an extensive history as a recreational and date-rape drug.

Krissy, sounds like you were going through withdrawl. Klonopin helps me sooooo much. I dont know what I would do with out it. It keeps me calm all day.

Goat explained flunitrazepam perfectly. It is pretty much known as the most addicting benzo thats why its illegal in the US. Valium for me is relatively weak and doctors sometimes switch you to valium to taper you offof xanax or klonopin.
I lost weight on Prozac. Only for the first couple of months, though. But I've never gained. Unless there is a particular reason why your doctor is giving you Paxil, I'd ask for another SSRI. I didn't have a lot of luck with Paxil. Everyone else I've talked to has had the same experience. .
Prozac, it's distant cousin, Staterra,( Lilly, for ADD ) had been attempted to be marketed for weight loss.
Lilly tried to market Stattera for all kinds of things, eventually they were able to market it for adult add, but it's still a distant cousin of good ole Prozac. LOL
With my personal experience with BZDS, pins are the worst. They seem to sedate a person more, and can kick a person on their rear end. That's the best way I can put it.
If a person enjoys (and uses for recreational purposes) the BZD effect, they will like the pins. But beware!
If a doctor is giving them to you, you might want to ask for something a little less sedating. I know they are given as an anticonvulsant, but diazepam was for awhile, too.
Krissy, the paxil is not your problem re. weight gain. IT IS THE SEROQUEL!!! Iknow ppl tend to get offended whenever a drug is ridiculed but I must say this drug almost ruined my life. Dr. had me on over 200mg a day for severe depression, suicidal feelings. I went from 112 lbs to 185 lbs in 4 mo.! Talk about depression try going from a size 2 to a size 18! I am not bagging on ppl who are over a size 2 I'm just saying to gain weight that rapidly is very disturbing. I took myself off the drug and immediately began losing the weight. Another antidepressant that helped me and caused weight lose was Wellbutrin. I loved this drug so much more than the ssri. I try to stay away from benzos because of w/d horror but I was on Atavan for a while and its short half life really helped me. Comes on quick & wears off quick. And btw. Vallium has the longest half life of any benzo. Take care and I hope you feel better. I have never gone thru benzo w/d but I have gone thru opiate w/d several times and I know what that produces. Does anyone know the difference in feeling between opiate w/d and benzo w/d? Just curious. Thanx and take care Krissy if you need a friend to talk to please feel free to pm me.
I was put on this drug in 2003 for Restless Leg Syndrome.I stopped taking it in Oct 05,on Nov.5 I suffered a stroke due to sudden withdrawal from klonopin.
I started taking 10mg valium and now I only take one at night.I was taking 3 1mg of klonopin every day.I have no side effects and no weight gain.
(edited by admin)You must not of read her post. She said she is a runner and a healthy eater. There was no need for sarcasm. The OP is here for some help and clearly EVERYONE knows that we shouldn't stay away from Kpins just because someone else had a bad experience w/them.
Valium does not work for me as well.
I don't know where you're getting that info. All I've been reading for the last ten years have been gripes about xanax.
Sometimes I wounder if it's not just the drug companies behind it because all the BZDS are pretty much off patent.
Sure, they are all addictive, but look at the new stuff. After it's been out for awhile, there are all kinds of problems.
You have to understand, first of all, that benzos are not meant for long term period unless you have a serious case in which I take Clonazepam aka Klonopin for bad muscle spasms and it works great, but I only take the name brand K-cut Roche klonopins because they work better than the generics. I don't care what they say, but I can take 3 generics and not really feel anything and then take 2 1mg k-cuts and feel great and no spasms. But anyways back to the main issue, you need to get switched every couple months to like Alprazolam or Diazepam and then go back to Clonazepam and vice versa. Just don't stay on any one med for longer than a couple months because your tolerance will build fast. My doc told me that he has a patient on 18mg of clonazepam a day and thats a lot! But anyways, just do what I recommend and switch it up every couple of months and trust me your doctors will understand if they are good people. I go to a pain specialist since I've been through a lot this year, severe case of pneumonia, two collapsed lungs(separate times but same lung), 2 chest tubes, sodium swelling in the feet, etc to name a few. But I guess its one of those years. I hope this helps!
I have been on klon. 1 mg 3 times a day w/ Xanax 1mg PRN for sudden panic attacks and I never had to switch anything. The klon I have been on for 20 yrs and the only change I had to do is go up 1mg after about 15yrs.I take them for severe panic and GAD,as they stay in your system longer and keep a level in my system.I have to make a comment as to what you said "Just do what I recommend"????? I think you would have to be an MD to give this kind of advice and I also question 18mg of klon a day.Dr Lois would be able to answer this question but that sounds deadly to me.I know everyone's system is different but any advice or "recommendation" should always come from a physician in my opinion.Hope you are feeling better, Nancie
No offense but you missed the point...well aware of this. the issue was the drug itself and other benzo's themselves. but thanks for raising my eyebrow. keeps me on my toes.
Im with you. Stop suddenly on either and worse can happen. Although stroke is bad enough...Sorry for this for you...I was close and knew no better at one point.
Lilred- re:Paxil, I have to disagree that the Paxil isn't the cause of weight gain. I am 5'8", small fram, weight has ALWAYS been between 115-125, I started Paxil and went up to 147 in two months. I have been off Paxil for a few days but have been weeening myself for a tad over a week, so Id say a total of two weeks Ive been comming off, Ive lost 8lbs already. Nothing in my diet changed, not exercise , just that med. I was still gaining while on Paxil and Concerta (my understanding is Concert can curb hunger, hence weight loss, not in me! Love the food!)
The weight was not my only concern, but like you said, the depression that follows that type of gain and so forth.
I'm just a Mom, in pain, a tad crazy, giving my 2 cents.
Withdrawal from benzos can be life threatening with seizures and worse. By comparison opiate withdrawal is mild and never life threatening. I regularly use morphine and I take myself off of it every 6 months because it starts to lose effectiveness. Withdrawal is about 5 days of mild flu like symptoms - really no big deal at all. You can't believe what you see in movies. Opiate withdrawal is very over dramatized. By the way, even though I use morphine for pain, it has turned out to be the best anti anxiety anti depression drug I have ever been on. I love it. And it causes no drowsiness at all at theraputic doses.
look into meditation, couldnt hurt
Opiates deffinitely have an anti anxiety effect. This reminds me of something i saw someone say on tv once "No matter what is wrong with you if you take enough morphine you will feel better" He was taking about all the patent medicines back in the day before drugs were banned that were almost all like 50% morphine. The anti anxiety effects is how i became addicted when i started self medicating my anxiety with opiates and then started to realize I like the feeling and it just went downhill from there. Also you never said what mg or dose you take of morphine per day. Most people who abuse it do not take normal doses and withdrawal depends on how much you are actually using. Someone who is taking MScontin 60mg three times a day wont go nearyl the same withdrawal as someone who use to take an 80mg oxycontin plus 4 or 5 roxicodone 30mg plus sniffing heroin occaisionally. I know this from experience. I have withdrawn from everything from 30-40mg of percocet or hydrocodone all the way up to 150+mg of oxycodone and sniffing heroin. There is a very big difference in severity of symptoms
The same thing applies to benzodiazepines. I have stopped taking xanax or klonopin from 2-3mg per day and never had a problem....When i stoped from about 8mg then I was in lot of pain and could barely move all my muscles ached and i was sick as a dog.So withdrawals depend on how much you were taking.
never had to go through withdrawal after a significant habit. Opiate w/d is a very unpleasant experience and by no means do I believe it is over dramatized. True it is usually not life threatening but you will feel like you are dying. It is something I would not wish on my worst enemy and should not be trivialized. I bet if you ask enough people who have gone through it they will strongly disagree with your post, I am actually surprised not to have seen more people on here stating just that. There are new meds to help with the process now so you don't have to experience these unpleasant w/d but they are sometimes expensive and hard to obtain in certain parts of the world. Rest assured that Opiate w/d is no cake walk and if you have ever experienced any significant w/d you would know what I mean.
Thanks,
Sweet P
for someone to reply to the post...he surely must be joking or never experienced opiate withdrawl.....
I am not a Dr. I just play one on tv.
Krissy,
I read your story and went thru the same exact thing myself. Benzo withdrawal is very scary. You can't function at all. Anyways I had an awesome doctor and he gave me Neurontin 400mg split up throughout the day. 4 100mg capsules. I never thought this was was going to work at all. I was on 6 mg Klonopin for over 2 years. But I swear to God, as soon as I started taking the Neurontin I was waiting for all the withdrawals of Klonopin withdrawal and it never did. Not even a little bit. I was able to go out with friends and feel normal. I was on the Neurontin for like 2 weeks and weaned off and have been fine. Seraquil is really harsh.I hated it, I felt like a zombie on Seraquil. But please try the Neurontin. Its not a narcotic and their is a generic so its not expensive. BUT PLEASE CALL YOUR DOCTOR ASAP. HOPE THIS HELPS
VON
I strongly disagree about opiate withdrawal being over dramatized on TV. I have went through wdrawals from just 150mg of methadone once a day for 6 years. It was one of the worst times of my life. I didn't ween off. Just cold turkey. I had halucinations and vomiting and couldn't stop going to the toilet. Extreme delerium tremors(DT's), extreme insomnia, I had extreme physical pain. If you haven'tbeen through bad withdrawals then it will be hard to comprehend just how terrible they are.
I have always heard that Xanax is more addicting and unlike other benzos, only Xanax will aleviate Xanax withdrawals. With other benzos, almost any other benzo will alleviate withdrawals from any other one.
Well being that flunitrazepam is banned here I have never personally had it but from what I read it produces more intoxication and anterograde amnesia than others and lasts very long. Xanax might be more physically addicting slightly because of its relatively short haf life but flunitrazepam was more widely abused world wide. It is notorious as being used as a date rape drug as well. Also any benzo would help with benzo withdrawal due to cross tolerance of the GABA receptor. There is no reason I know of that xanax specifically would only work for its own withdrawals yet none of the others do. Especially when I believe halcion is a triazolo-benzodiazepine which is the same sub class of benzos that alprazolam is in (xanax)
FORGET WHAT EVERYBODY IS SAYING ESPECIALLY BLU-42 I FEEL YOUR PAIN AND THEN SOME. I STARTED TAKING KLONOPIN ABOUT 8 YRS AGO FOR ANXIETY AND HEART PALPATATIONS I WAS GETTING AND IT HELPED ME IMMEDIATLY SUDDENLY I FELT LIKE EVERYONE ELSE I WANTED TO GO OUT AND DO THINGS AND EXPERIENCE LIFE I WAS SO HAPPY THAT CONTINUED FOR LIKE 6 YRS UNTIL ONE DAY I COULDN'T GET ANY, BOY WAS I IN FOR A SHOCK I FELT SO UNBELIEVABLY BAD I COULDN'T DO ANYTHING I WAS SCARED OUT OF MY MIND I COULDN'T EAT, SLEEP , GO OUT, SHOWER, SHAVE, NOTHING JUST HIDE IN MY ROOM WISHING I WOULD JUST PASS OUT AND DIE. AFTER THE TENTH DAY I STARTED LOSIN FUNCTION OF MY BODY LIKE MUHAMMHAD ALI. FINALLY I BARELY MADE MY WAY TO THE KITCHEN WERE I STRUGGLED TO OPEN A BOTTLE OF WINE. I GOT IT OPENED AND CHUGGED IT THEN ANOTHER AND PASSED OUT THE NEXT DAY I WOKE UP WORSE THAN EVER WHEN MY KLONOPIN CAME IN THE MAIL.SINCE THAT HORRIBLE TIME I HAVE CUT WAY DOWN ON MY INTAKE AND STILL HAVE SUFFERED THE SAME HORRIBLE WITHDRAWALS 5 TIMES. TWICE SENDING ME TO THE EMERGENCY ROOM. WERE IWAS RUSHED INTO THE TRAUMA WARD AND GIVEN A KLONOPIN INJECTION. I STILL CAN NOT GET OFF OF THESE PILLS AND HAVE NO MONEY OR JOB. SO I CAN LOOK FORWARD TO ANOTHER TRIP TO ???$* SOON. ALTHOUGH IF NEVER TAKEN OFF THEM I WOULD SAY THEY ARE A MIRACLE DRUG MAKING ME FEEL CONFIDENT, AND ABLE TO FUNCTION BETTER THAN I EVER HAVE. BUT IF YOU RUN OUT LOOK OUT! I WOULD SAY A SLOW DEATH IS DEFINITLY A POSSIBILITY! BY THE WAY I HAVE BEEN HOOKED ON PAINPILLS. ALCOHOL YOU NAME IT NONE COME CLOSE TO THE WITHDRAWAL POWER OF KLONOPIN!
(edited by admin) (edit3)
I have been taking my klonopin for 2 yrs and have been fine on it, everyone is different, maybe you have a condition called agoraphobia, it sounds like agoraphobia, that is when you can't leave your home or room. I have a good friend that has that and maybe you should discuss it with your dr. I am not a dr but am aware of those type of symthoms.
Also like everyone else I have taking klonopin for 2 years the only real problem like they said is tolerance.. benzos are not the right drug for some people and are a great one for others. there are non benzodiazapines like buspar and things.. but klonopin can be used long term if you take like you should. Most of the time it should be taken with an SSRI to balance the seritonin and panic attacks. Talk to your doctor you probably shouldn't be taking benzodiazipenes they will all pretty much do the same thing. Also if neccisarry a low dose as needed wouldn't be as addicting. Klonopin works great for me but its in the head too. I take 3 1mg tabs a day.. doing beter than ever. good luck!!
You don't stop these pils cold turkey or by going to a very low dose. You need to be under a Dr's supervision. I check in with my Dr. every 3 months. Read, alot of meds are like this. They help alot of people, but some seldom listen, and go through horrific withdrawal. I know people that say "oh I just stopped taking paxil" You can have seizures, always have a dr. monitor you. You had a rebound effect from being on Klonopin, any benzos, but this could have been less severe if it was done slowly and by a dr. that monitored you.Unfortunetly it is time we take our health in our hands, the Drs. need to be told what we need and inform us!!
EVERYONE reacts different, always seek advice from dr. and please don't scare people that these drugs can help! I was told Klonopin was not for long term and only when needed. I was told about the rebound effect. I did not take every day because the Paxil was wonderful!!
Paxil is a great drug, so is Celexa, for ME. Gaining some weight is by far the the better alternative than to be like I was before.I lost it and have been slim for a long time, it is temporary or try another drug. Everyone is different.
It is a hassle but you need to find what suits you.
I am on Celexa because the Paxil seemed to not work anymore, maybe because I was on so long or maybe perimenopause.
Good luck to you, hang in there, ask questions, demand answers from these Doctors. Some just want to write a script!!
Maybe you are just flat out allergic to benzo's who knows, klonopin, xanax, valium, wellbutrin are all lifesavers. Very good meds, You had a bad experience, we did not, I don't know why you feel this way. Hope you feel better though.
I am with tydyed65. It helps me tremendously.
I've been on Klonopin aka Clonazepam 1mg 6 times a day for almost a year and its only natural that you build a tolerance because I started out on 3 times a day for muscle spasms, but recently I just got switched over to Ativan because my tolerance for Clonazepam got to high and it was not as effective so instead of upping the dosage again I decided to try Ativan(which I've been on before) to allow my tolerance for the Clonazepam to go back down and I'm sorry to hear that happened to you Krissy, but you should have tried an alternative to help you out with your anxiety and really Clonazepam is for getting people off of Valium(diazepam) and Alprazolam(Xanax) and is also used for muscle spasms and the treatment of siezures, but you really should have tried Ativan because I guarantee it would have helped out a lot. I'm currently taking Ativan 2mg 3 times a day and also to let you know the half-life(time to get a substance out of your system) for Klonopins is 30-40 hours so you have to keep upping your dose quarterly at least and not to mention the reason why people get so hooked to Xanax is because the half-life is only 12-18 hours so you could take one 2mg tab at 8am and then wait until 8am the next day and feel exactly the same way so maybe that would help you as well. Anyways I hope all goes well and you are able to recuperate from what you are going through because it sounds horrible :( and definitely doesn't sound good at all. Just keep your spirits up and try to keep your will strong and you'll make it through it. Just remember to always take caution when using highly addictive medications. And one more note, you could also try a short acting Benzodiazepine such as Temazepam or something of that sort to help you out. -NateADM01-
I agree with most of what everyone has posted on this topic. About five years ago, I was diagnosed with clinical depression, GAD, (Generalized Anxiety Disorder) and insomnia. I would like to address the Krissy and her advice, (although ill-advised, in my opinion), regarding Klonopin. Over the years, I have tried a number of prescription medications for or my mental illnesses. Zoloft, Wellbutrin, Lexapro and Effexor XR for the depression. Ambien for the insomnia. Klonopin, Xanax, Serax and Ativan for the anxiety/panic attacks. Of the four benzodiazepines that I have used, I would recommend Klonopin 100% to anyone that is suffering from panic attacks, anxiety disorder and/or depression with accompanying insomnia! Klonopin is as potent and effective as Xanax, but Klonopin comes on a bit slower and lasts much longer in the system. This is good. In my experience with Xanax, it is great for a sudden panic attack, as the Xanax acts quickly and it even provides a bit of a calm "feeling"However, the Xanax does not last all that long. This means that it will have to be taken several times throughout the day, if one is taking it regularly. Serax, for me, was/is pointless. It isn't a well-known benzo and it is often prescribed to help recovering alcoholics. For me, Serax only made me feel lethargic and more depressed. Ativan is "ok" but it is very mild and it does NOT last long either. Which brings me back to Klonopin. Over two years ago, I started out at .05mg Klonopin 1-2 times per day. I found that it worked very well and my body became comfortably adjusted to this medication within the first week. I no longer needed the Ambien for my insomnia and my anxiety was more controlled. Of course, as time passed, my dosage had to be adjusted and increased. It is true that tolerance develops over time. Currently, I take between 2mg-4mg per day of Klonopin. I do not abuse Klonopin and I take it as directed. I have not experienced ANY adverse reactions. If I miss my dosage for a couple of days, I am alright. After a few days, I will feel the uncomfortable effects of withdrawal. I understand that Klonopin may not be the best medication for everyone that suffers with panic attacks/anxiety disorder. However, from my experience, research and the opinions of others that take Klonopin, it is the most effective and favorable medication in the benzo "family" of meds. To Krissy: You had an unfavorable experience with Klonopin and I understand your desire to share your opinions and experience with this med. However, to warn everyone AGAINST the use of Klonopin, as if it is the most horrific medication is not only misleading, but irresponsible. For me, Klonopin has been a life saver- combined with 150mg of Effexor XR, 4mg of Klonpin is the "perfect fit" for me. If anyone is interested in finding one medication that works well for both depression and anxiety/panic disorder, I would recommend Effexor XR-hands down! Pros: Effexor does not seem to produce the EXTREME weight gain that comes with most other anti-depressants and it is the ONLY anti-depressant that has worked to help both my depression AND my GAD. Cons: Effexor is NOT a medication to be taken lightly. One CANNOT abruptly discontinue use of Effexor!!! Even "tapering" down is difficult. Recently, I went three days without Effexor. I have been taking Effexor for about six months. By day three, I was experiencing the most miserable withdrawal symptoms that I have EVER experienced from any medication in my life! I felt like I was covered, head to toe, in static electricity. I could hardly move, my joints/muscles/bones felt so stiff and achy. Every breath was a concentrated effort and I was so on edge that I could of snapped at anyone about anything. I will just say that it was the most uncomfortable and uneasy sensation/feeling that I have EVER felt in my life. Funny, the P-docs like to call this "Discontinuation Syndrome" rather than "Withdrawal." Friends, I am here to tell you- IT IS VERY REAL AND IT IS WITHDRAWAL- plain and simple. I hope that my experience helps to educate anyone that reads this.
Blessings to all!

Hi!
OMG! Klonopin saved my life!
I had been having panic attacks for 20 years, and DID know what they were, and was given Prozac and several other wierd drugs that did nothing but make it worse. I had been treated with various types of the therapy with little progress. For some reason, noone ever gave me any benzo's tho.
Then, after a week-long episode of non-stop panic, with very little food or sleep, and numerous trips and calls to my dr. to test for diabetes, thyroid, etc. my husband finally took me to the emergency room because I could not stay home by myself with the kids and kept calling him home from work right after he'd get there. My mom had to come up from Fla. to help us because I was in this wierd, isolated world of terror and panic.
The emergency room admitted me to the stress center there, and I was given my first Klonopin that night. I was panicking alot because I didn't want to take anymore medicine due to the bad experiences with prozac, etc. Well I just finally took it after much prodding from a kind nurse who stayed with me. Within 20 minutes, I felt total relief, ALL THE PANIC WENT AWAY!!! I had something to eat and went to bed.
I took 2 mg of Klonopin every day after that and never had any more trouble. After a year, I cut it down to 1 mg. a day with no problem cuz I became pregnant. About 2 years ago, I cut it down to .05 mg a day with no problem. I'm still at that point.
This summer I will cut it down to .025 a day, under my dr.s supervision, as she told me stopping this drug too fast will result in seizures, return of panic, trips to the emergency room, etc.
I've been on this drup for 10 years with no problems at all. I've gone for as much as 3 days without taking it, but begin to feel panic symptoms at that point. My dr. said to come off it very slowly, which I'm doing.
This drug made my life doable again. Not sure if I will ever be without it, but I really don't care cuz it helps me live!

are addictive....and it does not make them worthless.
I am not a Dr. I just play one on tv.
