I have been on Suboxone for about a month and a half now. I tried to get accepted into the Yahoo Suboxone forum but I guess the mod didn't accept me into it. I just wanted to start a discussion about Suboxone. I also would like to know, for those of you taking Suboxone...how do you alleviate this #%^*! constipation?! It's driving me crazy. For the first month, I didn't have a BM AT ALL! I didn't know how bad that was and I guess I am lucky I didn't die or explode. Anyway, those of you taking Suboxone, I would like to talk with you! Thanks!

In the upper right hand corner of every page is a search box. You can type in suboxone and see the many discussions on it. There is always a thread going about it.

Also, you can type in constipation, or bowel movements and find the discussions on those. In fact, there is an active thread going on that subject too.

Welcome.

kwik fix

Lomotil is an OTC anti-diarrheal that is derived from the poppy plant.  As far as the BMs, make sure your fiber and water intake is appropriate, (I was all up in my wife's business on that subject while she was on bedrest in the hospital for preterm labor for 6 months! lol).

Good luck!

Lomotil OTC?

I need a script to get Lomotil.  Are you sure it is OTC?  Take care, htmom

Yes , I was thinking that

Yes , I was thinking that too, I live in Ireland and you have to have a prescription fot it over here, I believe it is a schedule v drug in the U. S. ,  would thst make it over the counter ? I know it has a opioid component  ( Diphenoxylate HCL 2.5mgs ) and atropine 25mcgs.   I have spoken to several opiate addicts using prescription painkillers to heroin that have used this drug to 'hold them' whle they could not get their regular suply of pills or heroin . But I think they were taking a lot of the lomotil pills to feel ok from about 40 - 70 , I have even spoken to three heroin addicts who detoxed themselves using only lomotil.  So the diphenoxylate must be fairly potent , I know that in my modules on toxiclogy  this drug came up and physicians were advised to have supplies of naloxone in case of overdose, the overdose cases were rare but there were about 17 cases in 2006 in Dublin , none fatal , but all causing severe respiratory depression and bradychardia, and if the people had not got to the E R as they did it is likely a lot of the cases would have proved fatal. So I thinnk your right Htmom , I do think you need a script for them, but I would be obliged if you could let me know if that is the case or not if possible.  Best of luck to all of you , and thanks.  M.

the same doctor who prescribes the suboxone also gave me a rx of colace and it works great... once ur body gets adjusted to the suboxone it will subside.., ive been on the suboxone for a year now and i remember back to those first few months and it was horrible.. any stool softener will help things work much smoother..lol

I've tried colace, dulcolax,

I've tried colace, dulcolax, miralax and xlax.

Colace had the least side effects and worked ok most of the time.

Dulcolax has the most side effects but worked a little better.

Miralax did not help me at all, despite all the postive review and doc reccomendation.

The xlax worked for me 2 out of 3 times I've taken it but also made me throw up in the morning each time.

My best solution so far has been increased water intake while using Metmucil. I mix a scoop with some lemonade powder and a big glass of water every night. This has been really helpful since I started using it, with the exception of the last few days... sad face....

Fiber

Yes. Increased water intake, and fiber. I carry a water bottle around all day long, and use the orange chewable fiber tabs. They taste similar to my suboxone, and I take one after dosing my sub. Twice a day!

One of the blessings of getting off of hard opiates, and onto suboxone, is getting you bowells under control again! It REALLY is an important part of life, and years of Opiate abuse can wreck havoc on a persons digestion and regularity!

lomotil

My physician had prescribed Lomotil for gastro-intestinal disorder I have.  I don't think this medicine is available (here in South Florida) as over-the-counter.  The nurse practitioner could not even write me a prescription for Lomotil, she had to get the doctor to sign off on this one.   ~Theresa

Lonotil!

Of course not OTC! It is acually a schedule 5 controlled substance.

It supposedly will potentiate other narcotics, and that is why it is so controlled.

They want to move it, not to

They want to move it, not to stop it.  Lomotil will stop po op dead in its tracks.  If you need a script for Colace, stool softener is the same thing(OTC).  I can't remember if you need a Rx to get Colace or not.  I have said this before but since being put on Fentanyl I do not have a problem with constipation like I was when taking Avinza.  Not sure why but I works for me.  Take care, htmom

Oneir, I have to take 4-5 Ducolax to get results (on Avinza).  But I have Bentyl (prescribed) to stop the stomach cramps.  They can be VERY severe if you have to take that many.  Would not recommend it without the Bentyl.  Might be an option for you.  Sometimes I would use half of a glycerin suppository to help the lower end. It worked for me.

I have the same problem

I have been constipated for so long now I don't know how I haven't blown up! I just recently in the past 3 days started mixing miraLAX in my water, and taking colace 2pills 2x's day bc I couldn't stand the pain in my stomach anymore. I do have issues with food that don't help my situation so it may not be the same for you, but i have to say it worked! At least it did the last few days. It comes back because I've done this before but I just start up that routine of the miralax and colace and it seems to do the trick for now... Hope your doing better, and good luck! If you find anything else that works thats not a prescription let me know... I'm always looking for a healthier way to go potty!!!

Fax Seeds

Can't beleive there is no mention of Flax seeds, probably the best natural laxative out there.  You can buy it at any health food store and some of the larger food chains like Publix; preferrably buy the ground kind - it is not expensive and will last quite a while.  It virtually has no taste and can be mixed into anything from yogurt, to oatmeal to banana nut muffins.  I've even added it to hamburgers, omlets and its wonderful either as a salad topiing or added to salad dressing.  A tablespoon of flax every day will give you and your potty something to talk about.  Don't though overdue the amount, expecially to start out with......this is not your sister's laxative.  There are also cereals, oatmeals and even cookies that contain flax seeds; while I do like some of these products, they don't replace the need for the real thing - perhaps because you are not getting the full teaspoon's worth.

Being a natural product, it sometimes takes a day or two for the initial flax dose to make its way thru your digestive tract......especially if "it's been a while" so to speak.  I know other people though that have had a much sooner experience.

The important things though have already been stated and cannot be replaced by any laxative; we need to be drinking lots of water, including lots of fruits, vegatables and natural fibers into our diets and a good walk doesn't hurt.
