I have been on Suboxone for 15 weeks due to an addiction to pain medication. Prior to that I was on hydrocodone for my aching back, I have DDD, bulging L4-5 disc, Bursitis L hip, fractured coccyx and arthritis throughout. Well, of course I got carried away with the meds and started living the life of an addict with the pills and I could not take it anymore, so I started on Suboxone. The weather has changed here, (I am in the Midwest) and I know my pain has a lot to do with the weather. I am not about to put up with this much pain and discomfort until May when the weather breaks. I currently take 4mg of suboxone a day. Would you go back to narcotic pain meds, or stay on the suboxone and just take otc meds? I can always return to suboxone after this pain breaks, if needed. Let me have your thoughts and opinions, I really would appreciate it.

Do one thing everyday that makes you happy.
I would not go back on the narcotics because it will just lead back to the addiction. I would up your suboxone dose and take otc relievers as necessary. 4mg suboxone is a relatively low dose so i would deffinitely up that first.
I am also on Suboxone and take 16mg daily. 4mg (as already mentioned) is a small amount. If you have been on the Suboxone for 15 weeks, it would not be in your best interest to go back on pain killers! Ask the doc for an increase of the Suboxone. I bet it will help with your pain.
Good luck to you!

do you ever feel the piont when the sub ..is at the celing limit and gives no more relief for pain? I always hear people talking about increaseing sub ..up to 32 mg a day.. as dr lois stated but I was wondering if anyones pain ..overcomes the celing limit for sub??
opiate ABUSE free since 6-9-08
At the risk of having people screaming and yelling about it, I'll go ahead and let you know that my pain management team has me on 32mg of Suboxone; 1 Suboxone 8-2 tablet SL Q6 for pain management. It works great. Most days I don't have to take the full 32 mg, but it is what is prescribed to me.
As far as a ceiling effect, I think I have read somewhere that Suboxone does have a ceiling effect. However, my group for some reason always has to push things. They made us sign a paper (I talked about this earlier) stating that we might be treated with drugs that are not indicated specifically for pain, drugs that are indicated only in cancer or debilitating pain (Acitq), and Drugs that have a so-call ceiling limit may be exceeded. I signed the paper, and so far have never had to go beyond 32mg. I actually rarely go over 16, but, to each their own.

What is a ceiling effect/limit?
In pharmacology, the term ceiling effect refers to the property of increasing doses of a given medication to have progressively smaller incremental effect (an example of diminishing returns). Narcotics, such as nalbuphine, serve as a classic example of the ceiling effect; increasing the dose of a narcotic frequently leads to smaller and smaller gains in relief of pain. In many cases, the severity of side effects from a medication increases as the dose increases, long after its therapeutic ceiling has been reached.

http://www.answers.com/topic/ceiling-effect is the actual source but the info is taken from wikipedia. Some one above asked if anyone had pain that exceeded the ceiling of suboxone. I have chronic pain/migraines, i am in pain all day, every day 24/7. I am on Suboxone(8mg/2mg) x4 a day. From everything i have read and everything the doctors(multiple) have told me that is the ceiling of the drug. At first the medicine helped some but now after 5 months of being on it my pain very much exceededs the ceiling. My best days ii am at a 6 on the pain scale (1-no pain 10-worst), and there are days that at the time i would say i was at a 10+. So just to answer the question, yes my pain exceededs the ceiling.
And to comment on the original post, if you have had problems with addiction i would not go back to narcotic pain relivers. One thinig you might try that my doctors are trying is to be on a muscle relaxent while taking the suboxone. Good Luck, and may God bless us all with a pain free life.
what is suboxone? what does it do? is it like naltrexone?

I am not a Dr. I just play one on tv.
colbyjh do you understand the pain scale completely. I highly doubt that you reach a ten on your worst days. Having your leg severed in compat would be a ten, being fully conscious while having a chest tube put in your side would be close to a ten but for migraines come on. I am not doubting that you are in pain because migraines can be very painful but not a ten. Lets not be over dramatic here.
I have had a "10" migraine. A ten is laying in bed screaming and writhing in pain unable to get out of bed even to use the toilet. An eight is labor without any analgesia when the head is crowning. I have never seen anyone in the office with more than a six!
I believe you are off Dr. lois. Comparing a migrane to having your arm blown off in compat is ridiculous. Having your arm blown off is a 10 migraines are intense but not a 10. I believe that it has to be so intense that you are about to pass out.
ive been self medicating for my broken coccyx, and its been almost 2 years now. which leaves me majorly addicted. ive tried suboxene, 4mg a day at the most. it somewhat helps me from withdrawing, but does NOT help w/the pain. if i had the insurance to continue pain mngmt, and FIX the problem, i would do it ASAP. then take whatever meds necessary to get off the painpills.
I've been on Suboxone 8-2 24mg per day for the last 8 months for opiate abuse. I recently hurt my arm badly resulting in "Saturday night Palsy". The nerve pain gets unbearable. My docs have tried norco but I got no relief. This past weekend my doc told me I could increase my suboxone dosage to 72mg per day until I can get in to see him on Tuesday. From everything I've read here that amount seems to be way over the top. What could happen to me if I took that large of an amount? Could I overdose? I really need some advice. Thanks
Maybe this is the wrong forum for me huh?

You can also increase your Suboxone amount for awhile. I am on Suboxone for pain as well, and it has worked very well.
