I have a question as to which med is better for pain relief than the other. My son was in an accident this past Sunday, and is in quite a bit of pain. The ER dr rx'd him percocet 5/325, 1 tab every 4-6 hrs for pain. They only gave him 28 & told him to follow up with his regular dr. The CT scans and x-rays showed small fractures in L3 & L4, not to mention a gash on his head which required 10 stitches, (staples), etc. He saw his dr today, and the dr said he would call in pain meds & muscle relaxers. Well, the dr called in Tramadol 50mg for pain, (I don't know what muscle relaxers yet), and I don't think that the tramadol will help him much. (Especially since he was given the percocets initially). I know that everyone reacts differently to these meds - but the question is should he 'waste ' his money for the tramadol? Would Tylenol 3 be better? I know he's in pain because the trucked flipped over twice and was upside down on the hood and roof. I thought that due to the severity of the accident and his injuries, the dr would have at least called in some type of hydrocodone. And he doesn't have any medical insurance for rx's. (He does for his truck of course). As soon as I know what muscle relaxers he called in I will update this post. But any quick response to this will be much appreciated. AIP

In my opinion

In my opinion, t3s work better @ relieving pain. with that said if your son gets his script and is is not helping you can call the dr back and they usually will call in something stronger.

Update

I just found out what type of muscle relaxer was called in by my son's dr. He rx'd Flexeril 10mg 1 tab TID. I know that it is no where near as good as the soma 350 that I'm prescribed, (QID). But was wondering if it's a good med for someone who has no where near the tolerance that I have. Combined with the tramadol, I'm curious as to the relief he might get from that combination. The poor kid is in a lot of pain, (he's 21), and I feel sorry for him that some doctors are sometimes TOO careful with people who really need something stronger. (Note on my initial post about the tramadol: the dr only rx'd him TID on that also). It seems to me that his dr "Under-Prescribed" for the pain he's in because of such a serious accident. AIP

I dont know?

I would say that the doctor is going in a good direction, narcotics aren't always the best first choice. I would error on the side of caution, if after he has tried them for a while (Tramadol) then ask for a stronger med. I know T3's are one of the weakest narc but still sometimes tramadol or Ultram ER works. I have a sixteen year old son that has every disk in the lumbar spine bulging. He has lots of pain at times. I still don't want him on narcotics until it is the last resort. The non narcotics are working for him, of course he has never had a narcotic to judge the difference.

50mg Tramadol is supposed

50mg Tramadol is supposed to be equivalent to approx. 5mg Hydrocodone. Which in turn would equal approx. 33mg Codeine, roughly a Tylenol #3. I personally liked Tramadol over Codeine until I got used to stronger opiates.

You might want to check around, for a while Walmart and Target both had Tramadol covered in there $4 prescription program, 60 tablets. If they dont still, Kmart has them covered for $15 for a 90 days supply.

About the Flexeril, they will probably help a lot seeing that they seem to cause more sedation then other muscle relaxants. Thats what he will need, is bed rest. And I know flexeril can be gotten cheap ($4) at walmart and target, so its worth atleast trying them.

i would either go with the

i would either go with the tramadol and muscle relaxer in combo or maybe just 5mg hydros or percs w/ no muscle relaxer. I know docs get worried about putting people on opiods b/c of addiction but muscle relaxers can b very addictive 2, and beleive it or not so can tramadol
