Recently, I have had two different surgeries, and both surgeons prescribed two different painkillers. I am in pain now, again, and am interested in which to take, because I still have many painkillers left from my first surgery. They are practically the same drug so I don't think it matters substituting one for the other. First painkiller: Generic sub for Lorcet, Hydroco/APAP 10-650mg. Second is a Generic sub for Vicodin, Hydroco/APAP 7.5-750mg. Which one of these is stronger, or relieves the pain more effectively?
Iron Supervisor
Iron Supervisor The 10/650 work stronger but 7.5's may be better for you if your tolerance is low.
The pills are listed with the first number being the hydrocodone mg and the second # after the / is the tylenol mg. I would be concerned with the amount of tylenol in the pills as well as the hydrocodone and start low. For example I would take 1/2 of the 10-650 which gives you the lowest dose of hydro normally available and also keeps your tylenol ingestion down. If that is not effective, then I would try the 7.5 but I wouldn't personally take 2 of the 7.5's for example at a time because they have that high dose of tylenol in them which I'm told is worse on the liver than the narcotic. If 1 7.5 is not effective, then I would take one whole 10-650. If you still are not effectively relieved, I would get a new prescription of the 10 mg strength with a lower dose of the tylenol and then you could try taking 1 1/2 or 2 without risking a lot of damage to your liver. Hope it helps!
Im assuming that the two surgeries you had are unrelated and the new pain you are experiencing isnt related to either of the unrelated surgeries, correct? So my advice would be to talk to your doctor, it isnt smart to take old medications for new symptoms. You could just be covering up important diagnostic symptoms. But to answer your question, Lorcet 10/650 is stronger than the Vicodin ES.
Oh ok. Well first surgery was for my arm. I had broken it a while ago and they put a huge %?#$$ in it. I had them take the %?#$$ out this year, and they gave me the generic Lorcet. Today I had all 4 of my wisdom teeth taken out and they gave me the Vicodin ES generic. Thanks for the advice everyone!
It's been my experience that any dentist I've ever been to prescribes Vicodin ES for pain. I've read other posts on this site that when people go to the dentist and get a pain relief script, it's almost always for the Vicodin ES. On the other hand, (in my experience), a Medical Doctor will usually prescribe Lortab, Lorcet, etc, for pain. Vicodin ES is 7.5/750, period. But with Lorcet or Lortab, they come in various hydrocodone/APAP combinations, i.e. 10/325; 10/650, and so on. That way the patient can get less tylenol, (APAP), so as to reduce the chance of liver damage.
both are controled class 3, only a few milligrams difference between the two with hydrocodone, the acetaminophen dose is a little higher with the ES (extra strength )7.5... the stronger meds. are of CII and there are many of them. your surgery must have been less complicated or you would have had a CII narcotic
Funny that you mention most dentists prescribe Vicodin ES for pain after a dental procedure. I just had a root canal done yesterday, and without me even asking for it, I was given a script for Vicodin ES. I always wondered why that was...I'll have to remember to ask my dentist why that is the next time I have an appointment.
Anyway, when I went to get the script filled, the pharmacy was currently out of stock on generic Vicodin ES (hydrocodone/APAP 7.5/750), and the pharmacist asked if I minded if she dispensed the brand (Abbott) instead, which they did have in stock. (They told me they could order the generic [Watson] and it would be in the next day, but my tooth was already throbbing and I wasn't about to go 24 hours without anything but Motrin or Tylenol.) Since it was only an extra $20 co-pay I told her sure, why not?
I almost immediately noticed a MAJOR difference between the brand and generic about 15 minutes after I'd taken the pill. I'm pretty opiate-tolerant, but this hit me hard (and this is after only taking one - normally I would have taken two). Definitely the strongest hydrocodone product I've ever encountered. I don't think I've ever received a brand Vicodin/Lorcet/Lortab/Norco whenever I've had a hydrocodone product prescribed in the past, and I was quite curious if I'd notice a difference, much in the same way some notice differences between Watson's and Qualitest's generics. The brand ES's came on much stronger and faster, lasted much longer and most importantly provided more pain relief than I've ever had with a generic. Definitely worth the extra co-pay if you take hydrocodone on a regular basis (either as a breakthrough med or for some type of chronic pain.)
