Didn't you just post a

Didn't you just post a similar thread a day or two ago? Anyway I had mine out very recently, it wasn't exactly fun but it wasn't too terrible. They had me take a 10mg diazepam (valium) before I went in which was nice, then I walked on back and they gave me a shot of anaesthetics and I was out in about 10 seconds. Next thing I knew they woke me up and the first thing I saw was blood all over my chest (not alarming, but not the first thing you want to see) They had gave me a script for 12 hydro 7.5's which were gone almost instantly since I have a high tolerence to them. Over the next few days I just took loads of painkillers to get by (I called them for a refill and they gave me 20 hydro 5's which helped, plus I had some oxycodone/oxycontin for emergencies) After about a week most of the pain had subsided and I was pretty much fine.

Stock up on pudding and ice cream though. And if your a smoker make sure to get some generic nicotine patches ($20 for a week suppy).

It's not all that bad, just plan on taking it easy. Play some videogames, eat some painkillers and you'll be fine. Just keep your fingers crossed that you don't get a dry socket.

All four, seems like it's

All four, seems like it's more common to take them all out now-a-days. Only took about 45min-1hour from what im told.

I had all four of mine

I had all four of mine (impacted) out about 3 years ago. On the first visit, the gave me and IV sedation (valium and demerol i think IIRC) and I had an adverse reaction. The last thing I remember was getting all woozy and telling the surgical assistants how nice they were. From what I am told, when the dr. went to make the first incision, I suddenly sat bolt upright, started swinging, punched one of the nurses, knocked over a tray of supplies and tried to leave, all subconciously. They apparently had given me the legal limit of sedation before having to assist my breathing so they had to send me home with an open incision, 20 vicodin 5/500 and 10 Percodan. Of course with my luck, the dr. went away on vacation for 3 weeks the day after so I had to wait till he got back and they could schedule an anesthesialogist to put me under with his own special "drug cocktail" as he called it. It was like night and day. The next thing I remember was getting assisted into the car with my mom ad me freaking out cause I couldnt talk cause the breathing tube they had to give me had temporarily made it so no sound came out when I tried to speak. I was freaking out thinking my voice was gone forever. I gradually got my voice back and over the next few days kind of enjoyed relaxing and kept and ice "diaper" around my jaw and head. They prescribed me 30 Percocet 5/325 and 50mg vistaril to help me sleep and make the pain pills stronger. I know my surgeon advised no NSAID's for awhile cause they cause prolonged bleeding. Just narcotics and apap. Lucky me after a few days I developed a dry socket. it x*#&ed, my teeth were pulled on a wednesday and the office called friday to see if I had enough pain meds for the weekend. I foolishly said yes and due to the onset of the dry socket ran out sat. night. Luckily I had some tylenol #3 laying round so it helped me until monday when they packed my dry socket with clove and gave me another 30 percocet 5/325. A few days later they also called in and additional rx for 20 vicodin 5/500 with 2 refills as I was going on vacation to Florida for 2 weeks. It was definitely a memorable experience but no one I'd wish to repeat. My advice: stock up on food you can swallow without chewing, DVD's movies to watch, and chill and relax with your pain pills, whatever they give you, I almost gaurantee they will give you a narcotic/apap combo of some kind.

In the more barbaric

In the more barbaric countries, where the general quality of life is lower than in the US (includes all other countries) - they'll just usually give you ibuprofen. I live in Scandinavia and that's the case over here. You could consider yourself lucky if you get anything narcotic after a wisdom teeth removal. According to what I've understood, getting pre-medicated with benzos and opiates is a common thing in the US and getting something with hydrocodone or oxycodone in it as a post-operative pain medication is more like a general rule, than an exception. You could consider yourself lucky, because of that. I know it's better to get even ten Vicodin tablets, than just a bottle full of ibuprofen.

note to self: NEVER go back

note to self: NEVER go back to Scandanavia.

I went to Sweeden and it was one of the most beatiful places which i had ever seen. the worst thing that i noticed was the prices of things. i think i payed an average of about 75 USD for a hamburger and drink at most the "middle of the road" type places. of course i never got hurt there or ever had any need for medical attention.

sorry to get off topic.

oh yeah. when i was about 22 or 23 i got my wisdom teeth pulled and recieved 20 5/500 generic vicodin (m357).

i have seen people be prescribed a wide array of medicine for this particular procedure.

i dont believe that there is one universal med or SOP for thos procedure. it just really depends on the doctor. although, i will say that most doctors have norms which they apply to most of their patients (except for somewhat rare exceptions).

i have litterally seen, 600-800mg ibuprofen to tylenol #3 to vicodin to percocet to hydromorphone (i kid you not).

all that being said, if i were a betting man (which i am) i would say that in the USA the norms for wisdom teeth extraction would be between hydrocodone 5mg-7.5mg and 500mg apap. additionally, oftentimes doctors will prescribed a secondary anti-inflammatory in adjunct w/ the narcotic pain medicine.

all thoughts and opinions expressed are those of my own and should not be mistaken for medical advice. i am not a doctor nor a pharmacist. all medical questions should be answered by a licensed pharmacist, doctor, or primary care manager.

wisdom teeth tales

I had mine done about 14 years ago, when I was 16. I think they only gave me a 10 mg valium too, and I remember I woke up during surgery. I woke to my jaw laying on my chest where they had unhinged it to get at my back teeth. "Urrrhnnnnnnnn", I hollered, like The Mummy. The nurses yell, "he's up!" and I see one of them hold up some syringe. They stuck me and I went back under.

When I woke up the next time I was in that awesome after surgery daze, running my mouth and hollering at anyone who looked at me, all the way home. My jaw was black and blue. I passed out at home, and my mom told me she would go fill my pain medication, "after she ran a few errands." Unfortunately I woke up about an hour later, in god awful pain, and she was still gone, and didnt make it back home until about 2-3 hours from then. People didnt have cell phones a lot back then like they do now, so I couldnt call her, all I could do was wait, in agony. Finally she brought home my script, 30 Lorcet 5's, with 2 refills. More than enough to recover, and feel good for the next 3 weeks or so.

Then I got the dry sockets, from smoking. The doc had warned me about that, but I smoked anyway, (Idiot). Painfull as all ???$*, he had to get me in his office, and shove medicated gauze into these red swollen, infected holes. I didnt take and medication before hand. I think I must have been out and the refill wasnt available yet. It hurt so bad when he was doing it, I actually called him a name and tried to kick him.

After that they healed up fast, and I had two nice refills that I could take whenever I got hurt, or beat up, (which happened a lot) or when I just felt like it. Good times.

Might as well jump in

I had my wisdom teeth removed when I was 21, and the Dr. Rx'd Valium to be taken 1 hour prior to surgery, as well as Vicoprofen to have filled before the surgery.

The best part about it, I remember them starting my I.V. in the doctor's office, and turning on the radio, with a Jimmy Buffett CD playing. I'm not a Parrothead, but I can listen to some of his stuff, and it was kind of calming (either that, or the sedation was starting to kick in)

At any rate, I have to admit that I had relatively few, if any, problems with my wisdom teeth extraction. I did have to eat milkshakes (no straw) for about 18 hours, but, the majority of that time was spent passed out. The pain can be bad, if you let it get that way. I do not advocate taking more pain medicine than needed, but with tooth pain, I would advise you, as a friend, to make sure you take it as every X hours(as prescribed) regardless of if the pain is severe or not. Don't let the pain get ahead of you with wisdom teeth extraction.

Side note: I had to walk out with the help of my mom as well, through the back door no less. The doctor was checking the trading market on the computer as I left, kind of funny I thought.

It can happen, but doesn't

It can happen, but doesn't usually happen.  I would think, as much as anything, the vomiting would be a side effect of the anesthesia wearing off.  Although I hate blood as well, I didn't have this problem.  I'm sure there are people who have gotten sick from blood, but would think that it is also a combination of the anesthesia and side effect of the pain medicine.

Wisdom Teeth, my story & reply to nausea

I too had all four wisdom teeth surgically removed at once as they had not yet even pierced my gums but were pushing my teeth together. I was also given a pretty "Blue" Valium to take during the ride to the dentist' office.... Woo was I feeling gr8t! Good thing too since I was scared to death the night before. (I was only 17 or so) They sat me down with some Nitrous oxide and then was really, really happy!! The surgeon came in and started an I.V. and injected some stuff and the next thing I knew I was asking them if they were gonna take them out or not? (Very obnoxiously) That's when they said that they were finished already. WOW! I thought, that was quick! It actually took about an hour or at least I was told. The surgeon gave me 30 percocet (5mg) and told my step-dad to be sure to have them filled and one in me before the anesthesia wore off. We did that but by the time I got home I was crying my eye's out on the phone to their office and the nurse just told me to tale another one. She also said for the rest of the day to take 2 of them at a time. Naturally I became nauseatedt  I don't think it had anything to do with blood I had inadvertently swallowed, I  DO believe it was from the pain medication. Promethazine is a medication to help treat and prevent nausea & vomiting (it also has the added benefit of increasing the analgesic effect of narcotic pain medications. In other words it makes 1 pill feel as if you had taken 2! It definitely helps keep the sick nausea feeling to a minimum and I would absolutely ask for some in the pill form (the suppositories are VERY expensive) to ward off the nausea effect anytime you are prescribed a narcotic analgesic. I suppose I was one of the lucky one's and did not suffer "chipmunk cheeks", dry socket or any black and blue marks from my experience but I was however, in ALOT of pain for about a week and a half. Good luck and I hope this info helps!

worst thing ever

I had mine pulled a couple of years ago. I had two removed and then a little while later the other two. Anyway, I got REALLY bad dry sockets. They were so bad you could see my jaw bone. It was pretty much the third worst pain I have ever had. ( first being screws being screwed into my skull while I was awake and the second was childbirth) I did everything right, no straws, no smokes blah blah blah, but I still got them. I ended up in the hospital they were so bad. I couldn't  eat, drink and I kept throwing up my pain meds because the pain was so bad I just threw up everything. Both times were like this.. I don't know why, neither does the doc. He said that maybe I have a clotting issue and the clots fell out.. which is what causes a dry socket. Well, sorry to tell such a horrible story, but it x*#&ed and I'm super glad it's over. The pain lasted a while too.. like a month maybe longer. But good luck!!! :)

i had my 4 wisdom teeth and one molar removed when i was 20. my w teeth were SEVERELY impacted. long story short, one and a half hrs later i woke up out of my not so awesome knockout punch from all the meds they gave me to knock me out pre-op with a mouthful of gauze and severe dizziness.  they gave me 28 norco 10/325 for pain after and i was in some SERIOUS pain afterword. all in all i was very much taken care of by my drs but was still one of the worst experiences ive ever had.   i hope yours goes a lil smoother than mine!!!

My Story

I just had to have an impacted wisdom tooth removed just a month ago.  I really dislike dental work and I informed the dentist that i get really anxious when dental work is to be performed on me and also that i have been taking opiates for the last 2 years everyday. Well i went in and the nurse gave me a cup of sleepy pills (she said) i think it was xannax or vallium probly 15mg valium or a quad bar well she said i should relax within 15 min and be ready for surgery. 15 min later i went back to get comfy in the dental chair...well the dentist walked in the room and I almost jumped out of the chair and swung around to tell him I wasnt ready yet...he sent for more pills. I took another cup of pills..and in 5 min I was out. That was 4pm well the next thing I remember I woke up at home (it was 10pm) and my wife said i walked to the car walked upstairs at her parents house for diner,  Took my 20 mg perc and was fine. And smoked a ciggarete luckily I didnt get a dry socket but i dont reccomend it, I hear it hurts really bad. doc gave me 30 10mg perc, with a refill of 30.

I had mine done when I was

I had mine done when I was 23.  I knew the dentist, and he was a good guy, so he took care of me.  I was out for about an hour, and apparently everything went smooth.  I woke up the next morning, not remembering a thing.

I spoke with the dentist about pain man. before hand.  He knew I was in pharm school, so he was open to suggestions.  I was rx'd 30 oxy IR, which of course, ended up "not working", and I suggested Dilaudid.  He agreed, and I was rx'd 28 4mg hydromorphone.  By the time I was "out of pain" (it only lasted about 4 days, but I played it for 2 weeks), I ended up getting 84 4mg hydromorphs, 30 oxy IR, and 30 5mg diazepams from him.

Wisdom Teeth Comedy Show!

I can't resist telling about having my wisdom teeth out when I was in my early 20's, which was in the late 1960's.  I worked in radio at the time, working on the air as a disc jockey at a rock station.  When I got off the air on Friday, my wife took me to the Oral Surgeon's office about 1:00.  I remember getting the anesthesia and I vaguely remember having the surgeon banging on my teeth trying to break them up in order to get them removed, I had all four removed that day.  The next thing I remember is being walked to the car (yes, out the back door!) with my wife on one arm and the doctor on the other.  They put me in the car and I promptly went to sleep.  My wife stopped at a drug store and I do remember she said she would run in and get my prescriptions filled and be right back.

When she came out of the store with my prescriptions (pain pills and antibiotics) there was a big crowd of people in front of our car which was parked in front of the store, in the head in parking spot.  She couldn't believe what was happening and she was scared to death as people were saying things like "is he dead?" and "what happened to him?".  She got to the car and opened the door and there I was sound asleep with my chin on my chest and blood running out of the corner of my mouth and the front of my shirt all red.  She calmly started the car, backed it out and left for home.

When I think back to those 40+ years ago, I have often wondered how many of those people actually thought I was in the front seat and dead, with all the blood on the front of me.

I smoked in those days and I don't know how I was able to avoid a dry socket, because I know I didn't give it up during my recovery period.  I was all swollen and in pain, but I went back to work on Sunday morning (on the air) AT 6:00 AM.  Needless to say, talking was kept to a minimum and I played those hits, one after the other!!  Here are the Beatles!!

All four

I had all four taken about a month ago.

The only advice for someone who is getting them taken out (and if they're a smoker) is to NOT smoke for atleast 24 hrs. I did and got the dreaded dry socket which was intolerable pain.

I'm prescribed 7.5 oxycodone so I was lucky to have that, but someone who isn't............

Removal wisdom teeth at

Removal wisdom teeth at modern level is one of extreme methods of treatment when the tooth cannot be restored, or it injures a nerve and causes damages to a mucous membrane of cheeks, language and stirs to a normal bite.

Operation to remove wisdom teeth needs to be made only as a last resort when other methods to rescue a tooth are already impossible or such tooth can be the reason of other, more terrible complications. For example, if there are the teeth, which can cause cysts, inflammations of a trigeminal nerve. Such teeth is better for removing.

The most frequent reason of removal wisdom teeth is a necessity of sanitation of an oral cavity in the presence of such diseases, as a chronic periodontitis in an aggravation stage when it is impossible to liquidate the inflammatory centre at a tooth top. Therefore treatment of a periodontitis should be timely. A multiroot teeth which are the osteomyelitis reason also leave. The stomatologist can remove a teeth at adjustment of a demountable artificial limb, but for this purpose there should be more strict indications.

The reasons of removal of a teeth are various. Candidates on removal are teeth strongly destroyed by caries which cannot be restored other methods.

- The teeth amazed with illness at started cases teeth start to be loosened.
- The broken teeth which cannot be restored.
- Incorrectly located teeth in a tooth number.

If it is impossible to restore such teeth conservative methods of treatment the stomatologist resorts to removal. After removal of a teeth in a jaw defects are formed, and an adjoining teeth starts to bend towards the formed defect. The Tooth-antagonist from an opposite jaw starts to be put forward towards defect. It is all can occur even at removal of one tooth. These phenomena lead to that chewing process is broken, chewing loading in respective area sharply raises. The habitual condition of jaws is broken and bite deformation develops. And it can strongly be reflected in the general condition wisdom teeth.

Worst Dentist Ever

Ok so I was 17 and all i got was novacaine while having the bottom two wisdom teeth removed.  The Dr. had to pause every couple minutes and wipe the blood from his glasses.  The actualy extraction was not fun being fully awake. Then they sent me home with IB Prophen 800mgs Shi**y.  I called back and begged for something else and finally got the Dr to give me Tylenol 3's.  But it wasn't to bad afterwards, back then hoping not to get dry socked . . .

tylox and mercenaries

i got mine pulled back in '05.  they gave me the gas and it was my first time.  so i started making what i thought was motorcycle noises to drown the drilling sound out.  the doctor a vietnam medevac vet stopped and said "if you keep that **** up i'm going to stop and walk out, i can't tell if I'm hurting you or not".   so i remained dead still until he left.  i complimented him on his speed and skill afterwards and he said "you were a gagger so I had to move quick".  in my nitrous state I thought he called me a 'shagger' so I started yelling at the nurse that i didn't appreciate him calling me names and such.  after i laid in recovery area for a few minutes they explained it to me.

he sent me home with a script for 30 tylox.  i spent friday saturday and sunday playing mercenaries playground of desctruction on ps2 and popping tylox on an empty stomach.

good times.

EMSIG on #17! I'm w/ ya on that! or was, longtime ago&old post.

Very reputable (local) Oral Surgeons in my state.   I personally preferred not to get all 4 wisdom teeth removed at one visit (unless it was absolutely professionally recommended).

These docs were great!  They had ya covered, FROM THE START, i.e.  They would Rx #30 of the 50mg Demerol just when u walked in stating it was painful & agreed to an appointment date at no fee!!!

Even just for 1 tooth pulled. It was however, left to the Oral Surgeon's professional opinion & you, of course.   Then, they gave you yet another Rx #30 50mg Demerol post-op.  Lastly, GET THIS:) an additional Demerol Rx #30 50mg if you were still in pain post-op.  YES, they gave lauging gas, Seconal IV, & the WORKS!  Long time ago for me!  JUST SHARING HOW THE WAY IT USE TO BE:)

Now, you are lucky to get pain relief at all from some Oral Surgeons/Dentists/Peridontists.  zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzSurprised IT'S LATE!

P.S.  Every patient's situation is different & your teeth are your health! Always, when/if in doubt u should always get a 2nd opinion. DON'T PLAY AROUND W/ YOUR HEALTH!

well everybody else gave 2 cents

So here s mine, I thought but can be wrong that you only have 2 wisdom teeth, an they come in after the baby teeth are gone, or 2nd set

1 poster said people vomit from blood, this is true blood in the stomach will cause vomiting, boxers do it all the time from broken noses

1 poster said she got dry sockets, it s best to leave gauze in your mouth as long as possible,if you must change do not rinse mouth out

an since i ve had my wisdom teeth extracted i started believing that cows are being corn to death in south america, an earthworms are being put in bolanga, an they making capsules out of

dried fishheads.

I had mine pulled in 2005.  I

I had mine pulled in 2005.  I had all four of mine cut out.  They gave me a 2 10mg valium to take one before bed the night before and one before I come in the morning.  I was really calm when I went in and I dont really remember much but the surgion asked me when it was over if I wanted the strong meds.  He was kind of a looney guy that had a son my age that partied a lot.  I guess you could call him a generous prescriber of narcotics. I got 30 mepergan.  Promethisine and demeral.  They were really good for the pain.  I'm not sure what mg it was but It was the purple capsule.  Would that be similar to a Percocet 10mg or less in regards to pain control.

Popular Combo

In New Jersey, a popular combo is Toradol (A very potent anti-inflammatory with pain relief on par with 30mg codeine) 30 Vicodin ES, penicillin and peridex rinse. Have seen one doc that gives Norco 7.5/325 (20) and Percocet 7.5/325 (20) for severe pain, along with antibiotics and peridex. That is less common. I even saw someone get morphine 15mg IR (30) and antibiotics. I think the anti-inflammatory is more helpful than harmful, as it reduces swelling and shortens healing time. The small risk of bleeding is worth the chance.

i had all four of my wisdom teeth taken out when i was 18 or 19. i had prolonged having it done as long as possible but from 6th grade all the way through highschool mine would break thought the skin and then it would heal back up.  i went to my local dentist and he then reffered me to an oral surgeon because the roots on all of my teeth go up into my sinus. during the procedure the nurse tried to set the iv and was unsuccessful, after about 20 plus sticks she went and got the dr. he look at my arms and immediatly noticed the track marks from my ill spent youth. he ask what drugs that i used recreationally and the length of time that i had been off of them. i told him the truth which was that i was a recovering heroin and o.c. addict. he then told me that my honesty was going to be very useful to him and that he would be unable to control my post-op pain very well do to my high tolerence to opiates. so he set my iv and shortly i was under. they extracted one tooth without any problem then when he started on the second i woke up. i remember it feeling like a hot knife cutting off my tung and try to strangle him as he yelled for the nurses to hit me with another dose. after it was over i awoke and he ask me if i remembered coming to both times. i told him that i remembered the one time but thought it was a dream and told him i was sorry. he laugh and told me that it was his fault for underestimating my tolerence. they directed me out the back door and in my daze i carried the 5 foot nurse whom was supposed to be helping me out to the car where my father was waiting. she handed him the scripts and we left. it took about 20 minute to reach the pharmacy on the way home and by then i was fully alert and slipped into the driver seat while dad was getting my rx's. he gave me lorcet 10/650 with refills about every other day for two weeks. if i remember correctly i was to take 2 every 2-4 hours. though they really didn't seem to help. so after i took out the packing i would crush them and apply them directly into the affected areas. which did seem to help and yes i am a smoker but luckily no dry socket.
