chat

Drupal does have a few modules for 'chat' type functions. The problem is signal to noise. Initially, it may be very useful to some people; however, inevitably flame wars and spammers start to dominate the sessions. It is just very hard to 'police' live chats for inappropriate discussions.

Maybe we could experiment with the idea first and see how it goes. TeamPharmer would have to give the final approval though.

Yeah, I agree. Some people would abuse it. Oh well. But there will always be people like that.

I used to think live chat

I used to think live chat would be nice on the site, but I don't know that it is necessary.  We already have PM options, and I use that to talk to a few posters throughout the day.  Chat rooms would bring bots, bots would bring site crashes, site crashes would bring angry Pharmer.org members, etc.  And, as davidm mentioned, the chat rooms are extremely hard to police.

Personally, I just use the PM function if I want to chat with anyone.  I'm sure others will feel differently, but I just wanted to chime in.
