I See A Therapist Once A Week For My Anxiety And She's Been Really Helpful But The Doctor I Was Sent To Prescribed Me Prozac And Atenolol, Which Ive Been On For 3 Months And They Really Dont Work I Still Have Panic Attacks And To Be Honest They Actually Come On More Frequent Since I Started These Meds. The Only Medication That Works For Me Is Xanax, I Purchase Them Off The Street And My Therapist Knows This And She's Taken Me On A Few Exposure Trips To Places Where My Anxiety Really Kicks In (Twice While I Was On My Prozac And Atenolol - Anxiety Kicked In Almost Immediately. Once - I Took Xanax And She Noticed That I Dont Freak Out, I Dont Get Messed Up) Ive Talked To My Doctor About It But He Flat Out Refuses To Prescribe Me Xanax Because Im Only 22 Years Old. I Told Him I Know There Are Plenty Of Younger People Out There That Are On These Meds. I Just Need Advice On How To Get Through To Him. I Suffer From Agorophobia (I'd Rather Sit In My Room Shelled Up Than Go Out With People.) I Was Recently Going To Sign Up For College Courses But When I Sat Down In A Waiting Area Waiting For The Next Available Counselor, More And More People Started Showing Up And I Could Just Feel That Panic Attack Coming On, So I Got Up, Got In My Car And Left. I've Never Been The Kid To Socialize With His Family And Open Up To Them, But When I Take A Xanax I Actually Sit Down And Discuss My Life With Them. So I Guess What I'm Asking For Is A Little Advice On How To Ask My Doctor To At Least Entertain The Idea That Maybe Any Type Of Benzo Is Right For Me. I Dont Know How Much More I Can Dissapoint My Family.        Thanks Again For Any Ideas

there are

no magic words to get what you want...sounds like you are using xanax as a crutch...but anyway..look the dr in the eye and tell him you buy them on the street and they work for you...that should help.

Well if you truly benefit

Well if you truly benefit from the drug... switch doctors. Its a free country. I dont want to tell you how to trick your doctor into prescribing it to you, but if you find a new doctor dont say you buy it off the street. Just tell your doctor your REAL symptoms and he or she will prescribe something. If it TRULY doesnt help, then tell them its not working and they will try something else. Younger people have it bad. a 40 year old can come in and say the same thing and they will probably get prescribed something different. They think you are young and shouldnt have stress, anxiety, or panic attacks. Personally I think thats one of the roughess ages. I am 26 and I take 3mgs a day and my doctor is sketchy on that dose.

Who knows maybe you will find something besides xanax that also works, but if you cant... keep trying.

Goat

Goat, I think when you were first prescribed xanax, it wasnt a highly publicized a demon drug that kids try to get high off of like today. Fastforward to 2010 and you will even have some adults with anxiety that goes untreated because of the big bad DEA getting involved. The DEA was more focused on illicit drugs, but now they are aimed at prescription drugs now too.

My ex gfs mother (mid 50's) once upon a time was prescribed xanax in the 90's, but hasnt been on it for years. Last year she tried getting a prescription from her doctor for a weeks worth because the family was flying and traveling on vacation and the doctor refused her. Airplanes make her extremely nervous and the doctor told her no.

I have to admit...................................

I have been on Prozac and Xanax for many years in fact when I took my first prescription in for Xanax the pharmacist had to look it up then order it as I was the first person prescribed the medication (it was a tiny town in NC). I came off Xanax in 1992 to see how I would do and the doctor gave me Atenolol along with the Prozac and it didn't help me one bit. As far as getting a doctor to prescribe them to you I don't have an answer to that one. Personally I don't see how a person can get high on Xanax. I am rx'ed up to 6 mgs a day but I rarely take even 4 mgs a day. They work on my panic attacks but they just make me sleepy if I take over 4 mgs a day. Good luck. I have lived with panic attacks since the age of 22 and I'll be 60 in April I know how the panic can control your whole life and I feel for you, I really do. Have a great day everyone!!   Greg

Some doctors pass judgement

Some doctors pass judgement without even getting to know you. If hes already told you no xanax and its been three months I dont think hes going to budge. You could ask to start out on a "weaker" in some peoples opinions benzo like Ativan or Valium. Ativan works really well and is pretty similar to Xanax and since its not that common anymore its not all over TV as the benzo of choice but its not so unseen that young doctors still prescribe it. Another thing Ive noticed is that older Psychiatrists seem to be the route to go, they were around when Barbituates and Miltown were the treatment for anxiety and see benzos as newer and safer.

switch doctors. I have had

switch doctors. I have had doctors that throw benzos at you when you don't even need them, and some who think they could infact be, satan himself.

I am 24 and last year I was

I am 24 and last year I was going through some really rough times(I was a victim of repeated violence and the person hadn't been arrested) and I was given Klonopin from my doctor without even asking for it. It seems like it's pretty much hit or miss with doctors...some are adamant about not giving out benzos...while others are pretty much hellbent on giving them out.  My advice would be...don't go in there demanding xanax...be a little more vague. Just ask if you can have something to take the edge off when things get too unbearable.

If that doc already said

If that doc already said "NO". Then there is nothing that is going to change his mind. Just tell him you have had Xanax before and it worked well for you and see what he says. They usually don't even ask you were you got it from. They assume you got it from a doctor.

If he says "No...Nothing". Then change doctors!

Goat s suggestion

of being upfront an truthful, even to the point of telling him that there is a source but you don t believe in supporting a local drug dealer, you have anxiety an insomia issues an you would like something, tell him the xanax works well, leave it to the Dr. to take the lead an work with Him, if there s a less effect way to take the edge off go with the flow.provided you really need the meds.

if there s other reasons , let your consceince be your guide, an don t ruin a good man s practice, I ve been blessed to see many things in this world an believe in karma.
