On September 17, 2007, the US Food and Drug Administration approved SOMA (carisoprodol) in 250 mg strength. According to the manufacturer, MedPointe Pharmaceuticals, SOMA 250 provides "...comparable efficacy to ...SOMA 350 mg with a more favorable tolerability, including less drowsiness."

Carisoprodol has a long history of safe use - the drug was first approved in April 1959 as brand name SOMA. Almost 50 years have elapsed; now there are many generics. Both SOMA and generics (350 mg) are often prescribed today for the short-term relief of acute muscle spasms or strain. SOMA 250 will provide healthcare professionals with another option for treatment of acute backache and other muscular pains.
