I recently was prescribed Bupropion 100 mg 2x day, the first script was a white coated pill with black print on it. When I received the refill, it was totally different than the original...not sure who the maker is, however the pill is non coated with engraved writing on it (don't have one with me at office to describe further). Issue is that the original script was working wonders, however since receiving the new one I've been going downhill for no explainable reason...feels as though I'm not even taking a med anymore. I've not been able to find any formulation of wellbutrin that even looks like what I'm taking. Any ideas on the manufacturer?
Thanks. Odd, this doesn't look anything like the 100 mg bupropion I received from the V.A. Haven't been able to find anything like the ones I recently received. Beginning to wonder how many are producing the generic?!?!
Goat was showing you an example of generic 100 mg bupropion. To determine the manufacturer of your tablet, we need the imprint.
Beginning to wonder how many are producing the generic?!?!
According to the FDA, there are four generic manufacturers of 100 mg bupropion:
- Teva
- Mylan
- Sandoz
- Apotex
There are also a few manufacturers who make 100 mg extended-release or sustained-release bupropion.
If you give us the markings on your pill, we can tell you the manufacturer and also whether your pill is regular release or extended release.
Thanks for the hint, I found the pic of the pills I recently received. Bupropion Tablets (Tab 100 mg)
Sandoz Pharmaceuticals Look totally different than the same product I originally was taking by WATSON. Not sure why the change has had such a negative effect, within 24 hours of changing, started itching all over, from my scalp down, last only one day. And within 4 days, realized I was getting more irritable, depression was coming back, got lethargic...actually felt like I wasn't taking an anti depressant anymore.
(edited to remove link)
but took it down when i saw it was SR..silly me

Maybe contact your doctor to let them know what is going on and they can call the pharmacy to switch you back to the other generic?
Thought I saw the pill online yesterday, but now that I actually have one in front of me, its imprinted with WPI 858, white aspirin looking pill...nothing like the orginal generic from watson. Mainly concerned since having a reaction to this new script and reading that all generics aren't created equal even if they have the same ingredients.
that is Bupropion HCl 100 mg by Watson Pharmaceuticals according to Ident-a-drug
Oddly, I was using Watson white pill with black writing and it worked great. Then on the refill, the V.A. sent me an aspirin looking white pill with "engraved" writing on it that also identified it as Watson. However, as soon as I started taking the refill...started itching all over, within 4 days, felt like I had stopped taking an AD, became irritable, depressed, lethargic...thought I was losing my mind. Just talked with Pharmicist and was instructed to tell my Psych to ask for name brand since I am apparently having an allergic reaction. Was told that even Manufacturers will "farm out" their product to be made by someone else, hence the different looking pill on the refill and the allergic reactions + mood swings. Scary to think that every month any kind of generic can be thrown at you as though we can't tell that our bodies aren't reacting normally.
I forgot you said the imprinted was "engraved".
The image on Ident-a-drug had the black text labeling you described.
The same thing has happened to me! The Watson pills with the "WPI 858" printed in black worked great; the slighty smaller white ones with the "WPI 858" embossed left me scary depressed, like sobbing-through-a-three-mile-run depressed (good thing it was dark out.)
Thanks for the information, though! Who knows what happens now, since my insurance is assy at best, but at least I no longer feel like I'm just losing it at random.
When I was filling my pillbox for the new week, I had to open a recently refilled bottle of Bupropion SR 100. The different look and texture of the pill immediately caught my eye.
I also noticed right off that the aspirin-like, all white version of our Wellbutrin "equivalent or better" generic did not have the sulfur/rotten egg smell that is usually quite noticeable when you open the bottle of the black imprinted pills (the ones I've been using for 3 years).
This is very distressing to experience. Thanks everyone for sharing your experience with this; hopefully next refill is the old one if this one is not as effective. Just took the first one so we'll see.
(Edit: I noticed while taking/uploading this image that the newer version of the pill is slightly smaller in size also.)
I hate when you get the same pills from your pharmacy and then they change.
Been taking this med for a couple weeks now and cannot tell a difference in effect. My friend just got switched from the instant release version yesterday to these new 100mg generic SR version. Seems like they just 'fixed' the funny smell issue. An improvement for sure in that sense.
I told my Dr. that i only want the name brand of Wellbutrin SR. Is Glaxco the brand name compnay, or is it Watson???
"bupropion" IS the generic name, though according to Wikipedia, it was originally called "amfebutamone" in the mid 70's and got renamed in 2000.
The Brand name is "Welbutrin".
Hi Kelly!
I have the same experience. I was taking Bupropion with black letters wpi 858(they also had a really bad smell). Recently, my new bottle had different pills. The writing wpi 858 was engraved but not printed and these pills were really bitter. I did not pay much attention to it because I got it from a different pharmacy so I thought that they just made them differently. Soon, I started feeling more depressed, more irritable, more anxious, and had intrusive thoughts about death and self harm(that's my specific symptom of depression), and my eyes felt really dry. I became concerned and decided to take my old pills (I still had a supply left for 3 days) and I immediately felt better. I thought that I was going to go back to the pharmacy and request my old pills. But they did not have them. So I went back on the white pills and again started to feel worse. They told me at the pharmacy that Watson is the manufacturer and that now they started making them this way.
This was the original pill:
xxxx please read the forum rules on posting pics..this one was not allowed xxxxx
I cannot find the pic for the new pill.
I am not sure what to do. I might look around and search to see if there is place that might still carry them. If you find out more about this, please let me know.
