CHANTIXI just started taking this medicine and am wondering if anyone else out there has been successful on it? I have found that the craving for a cigarette is not there any more, but I can't break the habit of picking up my cigarettes. Any suggestions? ( categories: New Medicines )

Besides the usual carrots, celery, pretzels, etc, I have been using Silly Putty as a substitute for years.......roll it, squeeze it, squish it, knead it, press it, pinch a piece off or use the whole thing. I am a reformed 3 pack a day smoker who still wants to be a smoker in my heart!!!! I never leave home w/o it. Replacement Addiction

I wish you the best with the nicotine beast. At 35 I had a cerebral hemmorage caused by smoking, extreme stressful job,no exersise at all and poor eating habits. Even after a stroke I still smoked for 10 months and my doctor told me he will stop seeing me unless I quit. Needless to say now in my 50's I am in much better shape, quit that job, and did all the "correct" things to try and stay healthy. I am sure you can do this, millions have and I found out the smoking for the 20 yrs I did damaged some pats of my body. I am sure you will come up with some type of way to keep smoking off your find And again good luck First, congratulations on
First, congratulations on taking the first step (and second and third) to quitting smoking. Obviously the first is wanting to quit, second is doing something, and third is sticking with it. Smoking is a hard habit to break because you get addicted physically and psychologically. Once you get over the physical addiction to nicotine the next step is obviously getting used to not picking something up and putting it to your mouth 20x a day. I smoked for 11 years then had dental work done and couldn't smoke for like 24-48 hours to keep from getting dry socket. I figured if I could go that long without a cigarette that I could just keep going without any at all. That was about four years ago and I still haven't smoked a cigarette since then. One thing that really helped me get through it was candy. I'm sure everyone has said that, but it really helps. Some people like chewing gum, others hard candy they can suck on, or chewy candy. I liked little candy that I kept popping in my mouth like jelly beans. You don't want to end one habit by starting another potentially bad habit of eating. Don't substitute cigarettes with a new food habit like carrots, pretzels, or some other food. You'll end up eating a lot more than you thought and just gain unwanted weight. A lot of candy is fat free and carb free. You could also try something like the fake cigarettes they have. it is just like a cigarette but without the nicotine to tempt you. Also, believe it or not but some people like flavored pacifiers to suck on, or just carrying around a pen or pencil to hold in their hand. I hope this is the kind of things you were looking for. You have already done such a great job breaking one habit, now you just have to follow through to get past the psychological habit of smoking. GOOD LUCK! I'm a social worker, not a medical professional. All comments and thoughts are simply my opinion and experience. I tried Chantix and did
I tried Chantix and did notice that my craving for a cigarette decreased. I stopped taking the medicine because I hadn't set a quit date and didn't utilize the support system that is offered when you get the script filled. I'm somewhat in the same position. People have offered some great suggestions on breaking the habit of having that cigarette in hand. Good luck on becoming smoke free! |
