Has anyone had any experience with Cymbalta? A friend of mine takes this twice a day along with 60 mg. morphine 3 times a day.....I guess my question is, how in the world could you tell if it was working taking that much morphine?!

Thanks

I have been taking 30mg of

I have been taking 30mg of Cymbalta for almost 3 yrs. My Dr. put me on it for anxiety, and not really for pain relief. I did not experience any relief of pain symptoms, but it did help greatly with anxiety symptoms. I laugh ever time I see the Cymbalta adds because I think it is being advertised falsely for help with pain conditions. Also with that much pain meds you would not be able to tell anyways. I would say if it helps in any way, take it. It is still somewhat new, so I bet in the future we will hear more about it.

The way I explain ancillary

The way I explain ancillary medications for pain is that maybe the Cymbalta lowers your pain perception by 10%, then the neurontin lowers it by another 10%, then the lidoderm patch helps another 10%, PT and the TENS unit another 10%.  Lets say the dosage of Morphine you are taking lowers it another 40%.  To get the same relief from Morphine alone, you might have to double your dosage of morphine and accelerate the speed at which you develop tolerance.  All together the ancillary medications may provide as much relief as the narcotic, even if each one does just a little.

I agree

I agree with Dr. Lois.....Narcotics shouldn't be the only treatment for your pain. Easy so easy to say just take a pill, but, remember, concurrent therapy with nsaid, TENS...blah blah, really do help. I've gone all three routes :1) Narcotics alone, 2) nsaids and tens, PT, and then both together, and got the best results with the combination of narcs, pt, nsaids, and TENS, I know i sound like a broken record, but REALLY, talk to your doc about then TENS...>I LOVE MINE

Is the Tens a expensive

Is the Tens a expensive treatment for the hospital? I dont mean insurance wise but more cost to do the actual test alone.

TENS Unit

TENS is transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulaton. An electric current is passed between two electodes placed over a painful area of your body. The electrical stimulation of the nerves in the skin and muscle in that area over-ride the pain impulses coming from that area. It masks the pain, similar to a counter irritatant like pepper creams or icy-hot, at least that is really nontechnical description. The TENS unit advertised at the link above is $40. A package of reusable electrodes runs around $20. You need a prescription, and insurance will often pay for it. You can also get used units on e-bay without a script.

I have been on pain meds for

I have been on pain meds for over 4 years and have built tolerance over the years to everything I have been on. After 4+ years of hydrocodone I am at 11 10/325mg Norcos a day, but my doctor and I have not been sure of going higher on the narcotic scale. We just recently included fentanyl patches (50mcg/hr), but besides that I also just recently started Cymbalta 30mg as well. All together for my arm pain (neuropathy) I am taking hydrocodone, Fentanyl, Cymbalta, Lyrica, and Lidoderm patches.

Each one plays a small part in helping me deal with my pain. If I didn't have the extra things like Cymbalta, Lyrica, and Lidoderm patches then i would be on a much higher dose of narcotics!

Def. Try TENS

I mean, could it really hurt at this point...it's always been helpful with pain...esp muscle pain...back pain mostly...I had a radial nerve palsy in my right arm and used the tens so the muscles wouldn't get atrophied...and it feels good :-)

I asked my doc about trying

I asked my doc about trying a TENS but he doesn't want to because the way my nerves send shocks down my arm sometimes sporadically could make it worse. He's not sure if the TENS would help at all, or if it would just make my arm worse than it already is. When I got just the EKG done those shocks hurt SO bad! My nerves in my arm are EXTREMELY sensitive. The one in my elbow that was pinched and moved in surgery got moved almost right under the skin and just barely touching my arm with my finger tips sends pain down my arm.

Maybe I'm misreading

Did you recieve a shock during an EKG? or an EMG....EKG shouldn't shock you...EMG on the other hand is what it is...getting shocked and measuring the response time between to points to access nerve function or malfuntion i should say...it's not fun to say the least....

I'm not sure now which one

I'm not sure now which one it was...they stuck needles all up and down my arm and hand, and send shock waves through them to see how my nerves responded. Thats how they found out that my nerves don't send signals as fast as they are supposed to.

LOL

AH.....well, that would explain it...AN EKG is where your heart is monitored...no shocking, except when they pull ur chest hair out getting the pads off...An EMG (electromyleogram), or NCV (nerve conduction velocity) on the other hand is exactly that..they stick needles in your arm and measure the response time between two needles with an electrical shock....I've had that done so many freakin times and i don't like it at all...I had a radial nerve palsy in my right arm and i swear next time i want some sedation...that was not fun...so, i was hoping that was the case and you didn't get shocked during your EKG...Ray
