Need New Meds

Ok, its been about 2 years that I've been on Percocet. I started with the 5/750's and have been on the Perc's 10/325's for about the last year. My problem is that it takes 3 of these 10/325's to give any sort of pain relief and it does not last very long. Some days I end up taking 9 or more pills. What I'd like to know from someone is what out there would give "longer" pain relief? The meds are for the management of a lower back and neck problem. Just need to know meds to take to my pain management provider as a replacement for the short acting Percocets. Thanks to you all for giving this a read.

other drugs?

What other medications are you currently taking?. Muscle relaxants, NSAIDS, benzos?.....Roxicodone is another good short acting pain med that would be an option, if you're looking for something longer acting, you could consider duragesic patches (transdermal fentanyl), Oxycontin, and then just use the percocet or roxicodone for breakthough pain...Best of luck

other options

I would def. check into some concurrent therapy, instead of just narcotics alone. Zanaflex is a skeletal muscle relaxant used for the treatment of muscle spasticity, also unlabled uses include: Tension headaches, LOW BACK PAIN, and trigeminal neuralgia. A tricylic antidepressant such as Elavil at low doses helps with chronic pain, and a TENS unit would provide some relief (this I know first hand, i couldnt live without mine)...you need a presciption for one, but u can buy them off ebay without one, Also, if you are not currently taking a benzodiazapine I would recommend Valium 5-10 mg bid with your pain meds, besides the anxiolytic properties, it also has muscle relaxant properties that work well for neck/back pain, Also, believe it or not Ultram taken concurrently with a narcotic can drastically improve your pain....Most people scoff at Ultram, but as an adjunt therapy, it is one i would highly recommend...Talk to your doc about it. Best wishes ...   Ray

I do have a TENS unit, and

I do have a TENS unit, and it provides "some" relief. But I'm thinking of asking for a med that gives me quick pain relief and then something stronger that "lasts" longer then the Percocet 10's...any inputs would be greatly appreciated.

How about

How about MS Contin? Which is morphine sulphate 'continuous' release - a long acting drug like oxycontin. It's been a few years since I was taking MS Contin, but if I remember right, they come in 15, 30, 60,and 100mgs. (Someone please correct me if I'm wrong here). Not quite as strong as oxycodone mg for mg, but if all you've been taking is the Percocet 10's, it may help you. Or like slitter mentioned, the duragesic patch works for some people, although I myself didn't have much luck with them. They didn't last for 72 hours like they are supposed to, and I had a hard time getting them to stay stuck on. But I have seen some posters on here who get their patches rx'd for every 48 hours instead of the 72 hours the manufacturers recommend. Just another option for you to think about. AIP

Sounds good to me

I will ask my doc about the MS Contin next month and see what he says about it. I appreciate the information as always. Have a good day/night and may your pain go the way of the dinosaur. Peace to you AIP.

BID (or b.i.d) means twice

BID (or b.i.d) means twice (two times) a day. It is an abbreviation for "bis in die" which in Latin means twice a day.

QID (or q.i.d.) means four times a day (from the Latin quater in die)

A few others generally seen are

q.d. (qd or QD) is once a day; q.d. stands for "quaque die" (which means, in Latin, once a day).

t.i.d. (or tid or TID) is three times a day ; t.i.d. stands for "ter in die" (in Latin, 3 times a day).

I do think that there was a thread on this topic a ways back if you do a search you should be able to find it.
