I have seen some mention of this in some threads aswell as seeing it on some of my RX's. thing is that when I say sometimes on my scriptsI mean its not always on my narc scripts. I am just wondering what the DEA number means and what doctors and the feds use it for?

Thanks, Kenny

 When doctors are

When doctors are authorized by the DEA to prescribe controlled substances they are issued a number by the DEA. It contains 2 letters either depending on when the doctor was issued there number and the doctors last name initial followed by seven numbers. There is actually a mathematical equation hidden in the numbers that pharmacists can use to make sure it is a valid DEA number. All states require it to be written on a controlled substance script to be filled, some doctors forget, others leave it off on purpose so the pharmacist will verify the script (this ensures people dont change the quantity or add refills, etc.).Doctors arent the only people who get DEA numbers, Pharmacists and I think people that do research with controlled substances can get them too. Heres a link I found after I wrote all this.

Heres another Link to some really good questions answered by the DEA.
