Opana and Opana ER

I was wondering if anyone here has tried or use Opana ER or Opana. I am trying to find the best basline medication to use to suggest to my doctor. Does anyone have any experience with this medication. This drug is newer and I have had good success with hydromorphone (dilaudid) for BT pain and thought since oxymorphone is similar that this may have less side effects and be more effective than the oxycodone I have been taking. Oxycodone seams to give me a headache compared with the cleaner feeling from morphine and dilaudid I have taken before. Please share any information or in-site into Opana ER(oxymorphone) , experiences and side effects and its quality of pain relief.

Has anyone had a good experience with Opana ER?

opana

just throwing my 2cents worth into this topic, i agree with PARADYME...I know for a fact that there are at least 20 topics on Opana and Opana er. Just type in opana in the search bar at the top and you will find a bunch of answers. I dont think that people didnt answer your post on purpose but this topic has came up a bunch of times....If you have any more questions please feel free to message me. Myself I do not have any expirience with opana but I have heard mixed results... There is a member on the site that goes bye Dr. Lois.. I believe that she is a MD. She claims to have a few patients on opana that really like how it works. You may want to ask her some questions. Well I hope you find the information you are looking for. One think that I do know about opana is that it is extremly expensive, so if you do not have insurance you are looking at like 600$ or more..Just a FYI....Have a good night and hope you find pain relief......

I have had good luck with

I have had good luck with chronic pain patients on Opana ER, primarily because it really does last for twelve hours, unlike Oxycontin.  It is very expensive.  But finding the best medication for you can be a bit of a crap shoot.  In addition, rotation of narcotics to take advantage of any incomplete cross-tolerance, may help with chronic pain management, so whatever you get started on may not be what  you are on for more than a few months at a time.

I have been on Opana now for

I have been on Opana now for a few months and it seems to be working the best so far. I have tries MS Contin, Fentynal (?), and Oxycontin. I seem to have less side effects from it and I have seen a reduction in my break through med use.

Thank you for your posts. I'll try the search.  I have enjoyed the discussions I've read and the personal experiences. There is only so much stats on paper can help you but real live experiences are far more valuable. Thank you

they say

I have never taken opana, but....every time I have heard that word, it is always followed by TIRED or SLEEPY or it dosent work as well as... so it appears that it has sedating effects & less if any euphoric side effects...but thats just what I have read and heard.

opana

not to beat a dead horse about Opana, but my pain doc just switched me from 80 mg. oxycontin bid to 40 mg. Opana. I have only taken two doses but am so heavy in my body and have a LOT of breakthrogh pain.  Is this something that will take a few days to get blood serum levels up?  I could tolerate the side effects if I was getting good pain relief!

Most people say that Opana

Most people say that Opana ER is no good because of its ability to not be abused, similar to the old Teva generic OxyContin.   When taken orally as directed it works fine.

Wildman, if morphine works why not go with MS Contin, Avinza or Kadian? Im pretty sure that even the name brands of these meds will be a little cheaper than Opana ER.

Avinza, Kadian, and Opana ER

Avinza, Kadian, and Opana ER all seem to retail about the same.  Avinza 60mg is $646 per 100 doses.  Kadian 60mg is $745 per 100 doses, and Opana ER 20mg is $611 for 100 doses.  MS Contin 60mg seems to be significantly less expensive at $444 per 100 doses.  These prices are just averages of the actual retail cost.  Your phamacy price may vary.  I usually give MS contin  and generic Morphine ER three times a day.   Morphine ER (generic) is the least expensive of the pack.

Dr. Lois

I tried Kadian and it was very ineffective for me.  Opana seems to be the best so far, but it is still so hard at night that I am going to self-terminate.  I have tried all the medications that you mentined in your letter.  I have fought this for some time, and have a psych that I go to, but the pain is so intense that I cannot think of any other options.

Good luck to helping your patients.  I understand, so may be drug seeking people, but I suggest that most have real pain and real problems that are very difficult to adjust to.  I was injured in 2001, and was okay until 2005 (Oct) when it just go much more intense.  I just don't know how long I can hang on no matter how much it hurts my family, the pain is just so hard that I can no longer deal with it mentally, emotionally, psychologically, or physically.  I just hope you have better luck with your patients.

Steve

P.S. never heard of MS Cotin - what is it, and how does it related to helping with pain like opana?

Opana

I have had limited success with opana.  I take 20 mg 4 times a day.  It is supposed to be twice as strong as oxycodone, but it has only helped a little.  I take the Vicodan HP, with is stronger than the Vic ES.  The ES has 5 mg of oxy in it, and the HP has 10 mgs of the same.  The vics do help with break through pain, to some degree, but I am still in a lot of pain, and I do not see that changing, and that is why I am considering self termination.  At night it is just more than I can handle most of the time.  I am sure that if you have significant back pain you have considered self termination yourself.

I am not sure what I am going to do, I have a family and that is horrible to do to them, but I do not know what else to do.

Good luck

vicodin ES has 7.5mg of hydrocodone not 5mg. The 5mg is regular vicodin.

Judging by the last line of his post I would assume self termination to be a fancy term for ending your own life.

If Dilaudid was better for

If Dilaudid was better for you, oxymorphone is Dilaudid, so it is just time released, so you should be okay with it.  I would talk to you physician honestly about it.

Break through pain is help, for me with vicodan HP which is stronger than the vicodan ES.

Good luck.

Wow And to think I was going

Wow And to think I was going to switch from Oxycodone ER 40's to the Opana. This might be one of the biggest mistake's I cold of made. This med does not work on a lot of people. Years ago I had an injection of this drug and it worked for me very well I just imagine a lot of people have something in their system that will not allow it to work

I am on 10 mg Opana once

I am on 10 mg Opana once daily and i take 45 mg roxicodone for BT pain.... I have to say that Opana works a billion times better for me than hydromorphone. I always did better with morphine than hydromorphone for pain, but the MS Contin has such a crummy oral bioavailability that I didn't feel a thing when I took it, so I switched to Opana... it's been pretty amazing, I highly reccommend it
