Hello All,
I am new here, I have been lurking for a few months now and finally decided to join. I browse over posts here and at erowid at least once daily.
My question is as follows:
Do they still manufacture methaqualone? Sources say that it is still available by prescription in Canada but I haven't been able to find any information about trade names or anything about this drug. I know it has been outlawed here in the states, and in many other developed countries with the advent of benzodiaphines.
Any information on this would gladly be appreciated.
I have a short list of inactive trade names that I copied from erowid, but I haven't found any information about the availibity of any of these drugs, and I know for a fact that some of these are defunct, i.e. Quaalude.
Quaalude, Sopor, Cateudil, Isonox, Motolon, Normi-Nox, Optimil, Parest, Revonal, Somnafac, Sovinal.
Thanks in Advance,
James
Soper and Parest were different brands od quaaludes The Parest came in 400 mg I think but this was many years ago
This is a copy and paste from an old post by Rawoody.
It appears that this drug is available in CANADA by prescription.
Methaqualone was discovered by the Indian researcher M. L. Gujiral in 1955 during an anti-malaria research program. It was marketed as a sleeping pill during the 1960s under a number of tradenames including Renoval and Melsed and in combination with an antihistamine as Mandrax. From 1965 it was sold on the U.S. market as Quaalude, Sopor and Parest, by 1972 it was the sixth most popular sedative in the US.
With its addictive nature clear, it was withdrawn from many developed markets in the 1980s, being made a Schedule I drug in the US in 1984. Up until the fall of Nicolae Ceauşescu's Communist regime in the early 1990s, methaqualone (along with other sedatives) was used to pacify orphans in Romania's state-run orphanage system. Internationally, Methaqualone is a Schedule II drug under the Convention on Psychotropic Substances. [1]
it is produced in other parts of the world as a legitimate pharmaceutical. It is available by prescription in Canada

Hey I Have a copy of a drug identification guide from my local law enforcement, and it has a picture of a methaqualone pill in it. I tried to scan the image in so you could see what it looks like, but I can't get my scanner to work for the life of me.
The pill itself is a gelcap, darkblue/purple and lime green. The numbers printed on the pill on the lime green side are RD 574. It's in a section about barbituates so it could be a miss label but upon request google pulled back nothing with the print RD 574.
Here is the scan to the best of my ability.

The methaqualone pill is located in the bottom right hand location. Do you think I need to post this in the pill idenification section at this point?
here is pic of a chinese methaqualone (possibly illicit, looks similar to Mandrax) pic from a Hong Kong government drug information website

here's a pic of normi-nox from a taiwan government drug information website

and this site has great pics and information on illicit african and asian material:
I don't think that drug is even manufactured in the US anymore.....At least to my knowledge...I was just reading an article on it the other day and it is one of the most abused pharmaceutical drugs ever manufactured according to this report....I will try to find and post...

it is a schedule I in the USA - not for medical use.
In the 70's President Richard Nixon along with the DEA Outlawed the drug methaqualone along with cannabis americana as a useless drug that had no healing properties that were of any value to help patients except for abuse. therefore 712's and 714's gorrilla biscuits as we called them and pot could never be legalized for medical purpose in this country without a new law passed and the odds of that is slim to none. good luck just don't get caught with one you might get to see what a prison looks like
Prison isn't nice.....
....Thanks Richard and the DEA. I can understand that there are things that should be schedule I drugs....no medicinal value....I personally do not think that marijuana, i mean come on.....really, or heroin for use in pain mgmt in cancer patients....that is totally legit in my book. I think the government could squander our hard earned tax dollars for more purposeful things...like getting murders and rapists off the street.....controlling the thousands of illegal aliens entering the country and sucking the US dry.........but, that's just my opinion...I know for a fact, that for me personally marijuana does have many beneficial medical uses.....

Excellent post, you always have unique insights. Keep them coming.

I believe it is marketed as Mandrax in Europe and Africa. According to wiki, methaqualone is smoked in South Africa, and is one of the most abused drugs in the country.
So it is still manufactured licitly, just not in this part of the world. I can't find anything that says it is still rx'd in Canada either.
