Well I went to the doctor today and he put me on Oxycontin 20mg twice a day. he wanted me to take 10mg 3x a day but I told him I wanted to go with the 20mg ones twice a day. He seams open to prescribing three times a day so that is an option later on if they aren't lasting the 12 hrs like they should. I also have 10mg percocets every 4-6 hrs as needed. What are your guys experience with oxycontin. Is this a good drug. I was very concerned about taking the oxycontin as there is so much negative press about this drug. I told my doctor about my concerns and he said that the active medication oxycodone is the same in the percocets and if the percocets work well than why switch to something different. I hope this medication regime works well to control my pain or at least keep it under 6 out of 10. Do the brand named oxys work for 12hrs like they are supposed to? I was able to get the brand named ones through my insurance for a copay of 25 dollars at least that is good. It seams to me not all medication are created equal. I have taken the oxycontin this morning and it doesn't give me a headache just a warm comforting feeling unlike the generic percocets . If anyone has taken this drug in the past or is currently on it please share you experiences with it or any information you know about it. I like to know what I'm taking and the common side effects and problems.

Constipation will be your

Constipation will be your main problem...lol. Oxycontin is just oxycodone in a time released version, so, in effect, it is like taking Percocets, just on a 12 hour time released basis. Can I ask what you are being prescribed all this pain medication for?

I take the oxycontin and

I take the oxycontin and percocets for Chronic pain in my leg following a femur fracture. I got in a bad car accident in Jan 27th 2004. I have pain around where the fracture was constantly. When it gets aggravated it starts to radiate out to my knee and hips. Cold weather bothers me allot as well. I have tried everything from a tens unit to Lyrica, Nsaids(bothers my stomach allot) , cortisone shots in my hip and knee, physical therapy, antidepressants. The opiates are the only thing that works. 10mg percocets is the lowest dose that takes the edge off my pain. Now that i've been on the 20mg oxycontin in the morning and at night and along with the percocets my pain lvl has been managed allot better. It doesn't get over a 8 out of 10 and the percocets get it down to around a 6 when it flares up.

In my case Oxycontin never

In my case Oxycontin never worked for the 12 hours. The doctor had no problem in increasing to 3 times daily and I do take oxycodone for breakthrough pain, being a chronic pain sufferer for going on 19 yrs. There are no more generic Oxycontin's being manufactured so in the near future one will only be getting the brand name. I could find no difference betweene generic or the brand name except for price. I will say that it is excellent for the pain I have which has slowly over the years has been advancing to severe pain due to my severe arthritis and of course my age being a factor. I do my best to get some type of exersize but some days it just is not possible. Getting the correct pain medication for me was a juggiling act and it took a few months but for you hopefully it will be easier.  Best of luck

Have you considered asking

Have you considered asking your doctor about taking methadone for the pain? It is cheap, long lasting, you don't build up a tolerance NEAR as quickly, and works as well (in my opinion) as oxycontin.  Methadone gets a bad wrap, but it's actually excellant for chronic pain.
