AmitriptylineI was recently prescrobed Amitriptylene to help manage pain as a result of Scoliosis aggrevated by 2 herniated disks and mild stenosis. The side effects are scary. Can anyone shed some light on the effects of this drug?
Thanks ( categories: Discussion of Prescription and OTC Meds )
Amitryptiline/elavil
Speaking as someone who took elavil for many years as a headache preventative (didn't work that well, but was better than nothing I guess) the side effects weren't too bad. The sleepy issue was there, but I was able to manage it by taking only about 15 or so minutes before bedtime. Also elavil does (at least to me, and as a listed side affect, not ALL takers obviously) cause weight gain.
Not sure if the gain is just metabolic, or if one actually eats more. But I did lose after going off, it and being put on Topomax. 'Course you are taking the elavil for a different reason. And the side effects weren't THAT troublesome. IMHO Elavil
Elavil worked good for me as an anti depressant, medication for sleep and for peripherial neuropothy. I don't take it anymore, but when i first started taking it, it worked quite well and is cheap....and there is a small side effect profile compared to most of the other drugs that would be prescribed for the same thing Ray Remember: Just do it.. EVERY PILL EVERY DAY I found elavil to be an
I found elavil to be an absolutely horrible medication but as we all know everyone is different. One problem I had with it was that after I took it I became quite drowsy but when I would lay down to sleep I couldn't. My mind and heart would race, It was very un-nerving. I was originally Rx'd it for headaches but it didn't help much. Years later when I was Dx'd with peripheral neuropathy an neurologist I was seeing at the time suggested I take it again but when he found out I also had a cardiac arrhythmia and he changed his tune and wouldn't give it to me and after all the side effects I had from it I feel it was a wise decision.
elavil
I have been on elavil for over 25 yrs and it is for sleep. The few people I know that are on Elavil have said they cannot sleep when they have taken it, but I need to have them in a small dose to be able to sleep. Without having them to sleep I am stoned wired up at night and cannot even close my eyes. Now this certainly is not a good side efect and when I have not had them for a time where the doctor was away or such, I have very scary nightmares and I know I am dreaming.I try to tell myself to wake up but I just cannot. Very unpleasant feeling for sure so I know how many of you feel. I should really try to taper off on thim until they are no longer needed but I am nervous about doing that too. Very strange medicine, indeed Without them I have cat naps and can never go longer than 30-45 min. in sleepland Good med to stay away from IMO unless absolutley needed Amitriptylene
This med is a scary thing. My husband was Rx'd it for neuopathic pain. Yes, after a time and a large increase it did help with the pain but also created many mental side effects- all which were negative. Blurred vision, memory loss, isolation, black outs & personality changes are just some of the negative Stay away from it if you can. Ohhh noooo
These comments are mostly negative and it is starting scare me a little bit. I was just recently Rx'd this about 1 month ago and so far I have noticed some side effects but nothing really bad. I have gained 12 (needed) pounds in the last few weeks but I am not sure if it is from the amitriptyline or from my predinisone. I am supposed to take them with my Roxi and Morphine so it may help t hem and also to take them at bedtime to help me sleep. Even tho it currently does the job I am worried bad side effect will arise :( Should I be worried? I take 10mg every time I take my pain meds (every5-10 hours) and another 10mg when I go to bed........? If you're taking roxicodone
If you're taking roxicodone and morphine, you don't have anything to worry about from the side effects from a little elavil.....Believe me, you probably won't even know you've taken it.....Unless you're taking like, 100-200mg....doses for pain mgmt are usually really low...10-20...50-100 for sleep.....
