Help with pain and docs

I guess I am just curious. I have suffered from SEVERE migraines all my life (like since age 2 or 3). I have anywhere from 2-6 a month in varying degrees. Most incapacitate me. I have tried all sorts of siezure meds, migraine meds, pain meds, etc. Loved topamax, but it gave me severe kidney stones. So now on top of the migraines I have constant kidney stones. I am currently taking depakote and seems to be minimizing the amount but not the severity of the migraines.

Any suggestions? I find that very few doctors understand the pain management involved. My urologist and primary will only give me 7.5 hydros for the pain of either. My primary only prescribes 800 mg aceta and triptans. I seem to have the best result with axert. But that is about 30% of the time.

My sister has the same problem with her fibromyalgia and she has severe herniated discs in her back. She lives in another state and finds that docs are lax in giving her anything for pain and she can barely walk. She has to beg for 5 mg hydros and usually they give her ultram or some other crap that doesn't work. She has tried lyrica (before it was on the market for fibro) and had no success.

Any suggestions on trying to get docs to understand the level of pain and prescribe accordingly? Any suggestions on alternative therapies?

Thanks!

same problem

Ihave suffered migranies since i was about 13 or so.....the only thing that works for me is: cool room, dark, Midrin, Phenergan, sometimes Imitrex, but it makes my heart race and that's not good for a migraine, but you said axert works well for you), and Stadol NS....It's a narcotic specifically approved for migraine pain...screw the pills, they take too long to work and the Stadol will have you on your feet in no time...once you get used to it....like it said it's a pretty heavy duty pain killer, but once you get used to it, you're have your life back......I don't know what I would do without it....Pure oxygen helps me sometimes too...I keep a tank under the bed and use it when i get a really bad one....Just something to think  about...
