Hey everyone, I had somthing very very strange happen to me today. Im currently on suboxone and have been on it for about five months,16mg a day. So, I walk into the doctors office nobody is in the waiting room and the Dr's staff is there and they all seemed very nervous. I usually go into a room right next to the doctor to pay for the visit and the staff told me to go into the Dr's room and that they needed to talk to me, so by now im thinking somthing has happened to the doctor. But I think i guessed wrong because they told me that the clinic has been shut down and i CANNOT get my normal script. I was shocked. Also the doctor was nowere to be found and they couldent tell me why he wasnt there or why the clinic has been shut down and that i will not be leaving with any medicine! Ive been on this medicine for 5 months i cant just stop taking this ill go into withdrawl within 24 hrs and i cant have that happen I need to go to every day of school for the rest of the year. so I have no idea what im going to do. thay basically said heres a list of doctors and we give you our sympathy. How is this going to help my situation is this legal for them to do Dr. Lois mabe you could help? Im starting to get very nervous but did, THANK GOD, have a couple of extra suboxones but what am i going to do ive called the doctors on the list and most are full or dont take my insurence so im basically screwed. anyones help or input would be greatly appriciated. Sorry for the rant/ any language and thanks for listening.

yep, it is 100% legal. it is

yep, it is 100% legal. it is very crummy, but legal.

the staff doesnt have much recourse as to what they could do to help your situation (except for what they already did - list a couple other docs and express their sorrow).

you are in a tough situation (as you already know). the best advice that i could give is for you to try to find another doctor as soon as possible (i know... i am stating the obvious). talk to another doctors office, tell them your situation, and ask them if they can work out a payment plan or something if money is an issue. also, it may be a smart idea to go ahead and ask for a copy of your medical records as soon as possible (before any more poo hits the fan). assuming that their is some type of legal issue going on at the office, it could prove to be difficult to get your records later on as the office/if the office begins to disolve.

good luck. i really hope that you can work out something soon.

suboxone.com

I know that your need is urgent but my advice is to go to suboxone.com and on the site they have a dr locating search with your area code that may help you find another dr, also there is another website naabt.com I believe that has a feature called a patient DR matching thing where you fill out a questioner and drs offices will contact you bye email. That is how i found my dr when i was on suboxone, the one unfortunate thing is very few drs accept insurance from what i found for suboxone therapy, i was able to use my ins to pay for the scripts but to cover the visits I only found 1 office in all of Rhode Island that accepted Ins and they had a 6 month waiting period. I had to pay 250 up front then 100 each visit there after and in the 1st 2 weeks was like 5 visits. It is unfortunate but I believe that the drs do it just to make money, me personally the way i look at it is when i was using opiates every penny I had went to my habit, I had to laugh when the receptionist said to me its going to be like 800 bucks for the first 2 weeks hahaha i was lucky to have 2 nickles in my pocket. Just hold on and do the best you can, the good thing is that suboxone has a 36 hr half life so you will benefit from that and I got to a point that i was dosing every other day. Hope some of that helps

Unfortunately it is legal

Unfortunately it is legal and your only real option is to take as little of your extra suboxone as possible until you find a new doctor. If all the doctors on the list your old doctor arn't good then do as posted above and go to suboxone.com and see if there are any doctors in your area that isn't on the list u have already. I do know that there are places in new york that take insurance for suboxone although not all types. Two of my friends went to the same doctor they took ones insurance and the other had to pay cash(money down and then monthly $425 for prescription plus $100 for visit.)

medical records

it's the medical records that are important.  As long as you have access to your medical records then you can start talking to the physicians on the referrel list and build a rapport with another physician.

Can I ask why medical

Can I ask why medical records are even relevant at all? it isn't like he needs his old mri's to get pain medicine he is on it for maintenance. I just dont see how medical records will get you into a suboxone treatment when they take new people in anyway. The only thing I can see it doing is speeding up the process a little bit because the doctor will know you were already on it but you can just show him a recent prescription bottle and it should do the same thing.

medical records are relevant

medical records are relevant for a variety of reasons.

first off, most doctors want medical records before prescribing any type of controlled substance. it is just considered good medical practice. secondly, medical records will illustrate to other physicians why the patient was on sub, what dosage the patient was on, how the patient has tolerated the drug, et cetera.  furthermore, it will provide the future prescriber other potentially relevant information (such as drug allergies).  most responsible physicians will want to have all of this information instead of relying on the patients word of mouth.

there is a reason that doctors ask for new patients medical records and not their old prescription bottles.

Thanks for clarifying that

Thanks for clarifying that for me phispher as I am only 19 years old all my previous doctor switches were handled by my mother so I didn't know transfering records was necessary or considered good medical practice. I always thought the new doctor just started a new medical record unless you had a pre-existing condition in which case they would want the old mri's or xrays.

It isn't always necessary to

It isn't always necessary to get a patient's old records.  Some patients have uncomplicated medical histories and are good historians.  Getting a patients old records can be a huge pain, and are not always useful.  Patients don't have a valid address or phone number for their old doctor, the notes are illegible, the notes are incomplete, the patient was seeing multiple specialists, etc.

I agree that sometimes if a

I agree that sometimes if a patient doesn't have a significant or lengthy medical history then records are not needed. however, i stand by the statement that most physicians (at least the responsible ones) would like to have a patients prior records before prescribing narcotics or any type of controlled substance. after all, a lot of patients are NOT good historians. also, it is always good to know significant data from the old physician to rule out any type of doctor shopping or non-compliance issues.

as for the notes being illegible... well, i can kind of understand that in years past, however, most of the clinics and offices these days have electronic charts which are very easy to read.

You are entitled to one free

You are entitled to one free copy of your medical records, so go get your copy now.....like someone said, before the poo hits the fan...I feel for you....the dr locator on suboxone.com try that....then you might try calling a few that are in your area and see if they are accepting new patients....Did you ever find out why the office closed?

Ouch.  The same thing

Ouch.  The same thing recently happened here.  A doctor who did suboxone suddenly had his license yanked, and had to shut down the office.  I picked up a lot of his suboxone patients.  The staff was copying the Suboxone patient's records and giving them to the patients along with a list of other providers when they came in for their appointments.

sub...

i think u should definately get copies of your records, as i was in a similar situation about a year ago.  i was living in maine seeing a pcp, who was rxing me 120 roxi 15s a month for neck pain from herniated discs and DDD with the arm and hand pains etc.  so after i finally got my wkmans comp retro pay, i moved back down to mass which is my home state, but was gonna continue seeing this dr in maine because we had a good trusting relationship and i hadnt found a dr down in mass yet.  so i ha dseen him twice while living in MA, once a month, until Feb. came.  i had an appt with him, now his office staff was a bunch of u know whats, but he had moved to a different office so i thought these new people might be better.  so i drive the 2 hours up to maine, and this was the appt i was gonna have him refer me to another doc down in MA near where I lived, and also have him refer me to a neurosurgeon that i had seen a couple years back.  so i get to his office, and the lady asked me , "didnt anyone call you?"  and "didnt u receive a letter?", i answered NO to both. and she proceeded to tell me that my doc had left the practice and found another job!!  WITH NO NOTICE TO ME !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!  so i drove up there for 2 hours, AND my roxis needed to be refilled.  so I went off on these people.  this was just a continuation of how i had been treated the whole time i saw this dr,  because i was young, had tattoos and piercings and am a big dude, they assumed i was a drug addict coz i was receiving narcotics every month for my pain.  So they didnt bother to let me know he was gone.   So i told them I was NOT leaving without a refill for my meds after what they pulled..  I really let them have it.  so i waited for about 15 mins and finally another dr came out and pulled me in a little hallway and gave me a script for my meds, and told me to find another doc.  I said "gee thanks I hadnt figured that out yet!!" but i was a lot more rude.  so right then and there I signed a release for my records to be sent right to my house in MA, because knowing this office i knew that if i waited too long my records might disappear too, or be misplaced etc.  The point being.... if u stop seeing a dr that was giving u narcotic pain meds, or subs or whatever it may be, GET your records ASAP.  not only will it make it easier on u when u find another doc, but you wont have to deal with them losing them or whatever.  ESPECIALLY if you are being discriminated against wether u know it or not.  For being an addict, or being on suboxone, methadone, it does not matter!!    So with that doc, most likely he was giving rxs out like candy and got busted.  unless u found out what really happened to him.  Anyways good luck with the suboxone.
