Hi everybody....i hope today is a good day ,i know for some of us we have more bad then good days! What a struggle to be pain free and be able to function and enjoy a day!I speak fo myself.Anyway i've been investigating the internet on some information about my patch....all i get is physicians terms that can be confusing, and frightening yano!I have been recieving these as part of my treatment through the" pain clinic"  For about 9 months  now plus a few other fairly milder narcotics . My question is.....What exactly is in the patch?A type of morphine? or Hydrocodone? If any body knows what "s in it please write me!! Thanks for your time...laura  Any questions for me please feel free to ask!

The patches are exactly what

The patches are exactly what they say...Fentanyl which is its own chemical. I am pretty sure it is a semi-synthetic opiate which means it is not found in the opium plant naturally like morphine, codeine, or thebaine but is derived or synthesized from the opium resin. It is pretty much the most potent opiate narcotic per mg used on humans for pain control.

I never really liked

I never really liked fentanyl for that reason. It always made me sweat a lot and made me nauseous. I dislike the patches because I am a rather hairy person and had to shave my back so it would stick right and then they would fall off anyway once they started working cause i would be sweating profusely.

Doesn't work...then really works!

I always had trouble getting the patch to stay on my skin for the entire time, too. Here's the one thing I do want you to know....when I was on the "Duragesic" (fentanyl) patch, I never felt like it was really working to well, then one night I fell asleep on the couch, unfortunatly I was lying on the area where the patch was located and because I did not roll or move all night, when my husband tried to wake me the next morning, I was non-responsive. He had to carry me into my pain mgmt clinic and the dr. there had to give me a shot of epinephrine. I could of died! Just be super careful with your patch, NEVER let it rupture while it is in contact with your skin.

For any "junkies" reading this post, rupturing the patch and trying to take all of its contents at once will kill you. Only one in five people who come into dermal contact with pure fentanyl live.

Wow! I've never heard of

Wow! I've never heard of that happening to anyone...why didn't your husband take you to the ER instead of your doc's office? So did the heat from laying on it put too much into your body, or did you actually rupture the patch? Also, where did you get the information about 1 in 5 living?

They do always say when

They do always say when using fentanyl patches to be careful about getting them hot, or getting too hot with them on. You should put the patch in a place on your body that does not sweat as much as other parts, such as a thigh, etc. Also, when putting the patch on, make sure you place it somewhere that does not have as much contact with other things. For example, make sure not to put it somewhere along the top of your pant line so your pants do not rub it, also for women, do not put it where a bra rubs against it. Do not put it in a place where your body moves or bends alot either.

The patches say not to shave just for the patch, but instead take scissors to trim the hair shorter. I have also found that the Mylan brand patches are better than Watson or Sandoz. Watson and Sandoz have a pouch in the middle where most of the medicine is, and the Mylan is more of a thin square.  The Watson seems to have more adhesive and glue, yet it still does not stay on well at all, it actually fell off more than the others.

Fentanyl "Duragesic' Patch

If you read the insert that comes in the box of patches; you will see a warning about wearing the patches in tempartures above either 100f or 102f (It has been a while since i have read one). Taking a hot shower with a patch on will make MORE medication flow from the patch and will also cause the patch not to last the entire 3 days as it should. Sleeping on the patch can raise its temp. considerably when it is being laid on for many hours as well and could present a dangerous situation. Lastly sports tape or a white medical tape can hold the patch on if your having problems with it sticking.
