When did 50mg diphenhydramine moved to OTC?

I need to know when 50mg diphenhydramine moved to OTC status.

OTC Diphenhydromine

I'm not sure when it went for sale OTC, but I was buying it in 1988.  I would imagine every state might have their own rules on it.  It's great for use as a sleep aid, because you have nothing in with it, like some of the products do.
