Hello eveybody! I've been reading here a bit and decide to just float something along for opinions. Ive been dealing with terrible back pain for the better part of two years. I've been to a neurologist, physical therapy, several MRI's, and no dr can see anything wrong. I've been taking Vicodin 7.5/750 for about 6 months on an as neeed basis, probabaly, 5-6 times a week. But in all actuality it doesn't seem to really do anything. I asked my doctor if there was anything stronger, and he said yes, but he couldnt prescribe it, only pain management could. My neurologist flatley refuses any pain medication since he cannot see anything on the MRI. But i am in pain;lots! I was just looking for any suggestions for pain relief and curious why my doc could only prescribe Vicodin and nothing stronger. He didnt' say he wouldn't, he said he couldn't. Should i look into pain mangement?
I think he means he morally couldnt. If he can rx hydrocodone, he rx CII's. He sounds like a doc that likes to play it safe, and pass the rxing on to pain management.
You can't really blame him. With the DEA's witchhunt to "protect" ourselves from drugs, they are screwing up alot of patients and doctors lives.
Maybe he just has some office policy where he wont rx anything stronger than vics when there is no physical evidence of an illness or problem. You said your MRIs didn't show anything. I dont blame a doctor for covering his @!^ and not prescribing schedule II drugs when there is no documented condition. My suggestion would be to go to a pain management clinic because obviously your normal doc cant figure out whats wrong.
Yes, there are stronger drugs out there but they may not be the best way to go.
Depending on what is causing your pain there are other, better options available. For most problem non-surgical decompression, TENS units, Muscle stims, decompression massage therapy, or just a good adjustment by a chiropractor may be great options.
Best look for a way to alleviate the problem instead of taking more drugs.
Once you go to the CII's and they get to where they don't work where do you go from there.
Then you go back to other types of medication regiments which might have been out of the system long enough to become effective again. There are always medications that will help.
There are certainly stronger opiods that you could use, but my first suggestion would be trying a TENS unit, if you already haven't......They are a godsend for lower back pain. Especially in combination with a narcotic, and you could even take some Ibuprofen with your lortab.......Ibu works better for back pain than APAP does, in my opinion.
