I was wondering if since methadone blocks receptors for opiate receptors, does it block benzo receptors or make it work weaker. Any knowledge would be great.

Nope

Nope methadone does not block out benzos. because there are two different receptors in your CNS for each of the drugs. Benzos in combination with the methadone actually makes the methadone more potent. regards, jpd.

don't over do it!

Try not to take more than prescribed of either one.  It can be deadly.  Where I live there have been many people die from methadone and benzo overdose in the past few years.  I even lost a couple of friends to it.  But I believe that methadone can work wonders if taken appropriately.

Methadone and brain receptors

I have been on Methadone for five years for CP and as far as I know, Methadone does not block the brain receptors.  In other words, you can still take other medications for breakthrough pain that use the same receptors.  What the Methadone does do is block the euphoric or high you would normally might get from the drug.

I take Klonopin myself, along with Methadone.  I am prescribed 1 mg TID, and it works fine for me.

jpd and hydro are correct

It does not block benzo's, it increases the potency of the methadone and is very dangerous.  I am off the methadone clinic now, but I too have seen people die from taking benzo's on top of their meth.  Truth is, that it's a bad idea to mix opiates and benzo's peroid.

well, actually methadone

well, actually methadone doesn't block opiate receptors. it just has a strong affinity to them. i take methadone since many years now.

what makes methadone weaker (faster metabolism) are for example alcohol and phenobarbital.

then i think there are benzos that make methadone act longer, if they are metabolized by the cyp450 in the liver (most benzodiazepines), an exception should be lorazepam that is metabolized by another enzyme (simplified). anyway, all benzos and opioides / opiates act stronger when consumed at the same time.
