Trying to get off of oxycontin with benzos

I talked to a pharmacist and he said anti anxiety meds are a good way to help with the withdrawal symptoms of coming off of oxycontin. I tried going cold turkey for 4 days and I was a wreck! I was using roughly 240mg oxycontin daily.this pharnacist also told me not to come off of oxycontin cold turkey so my question is can you safely use both drugs? thexanax does help the withdrawal sides but he said to continue taking the oxycontin just to taper down. what should I do? Im still using both. the amount I use is going down but the mixture cannot be healthy. If I cutt out the oxy completely I feel pretty awful even with the xanax. I take roughly 3mg xanax daily and am down to about 160mg oxycontin. should I just take the xanax? or stick with both and keep tapering off the oxy slowly? or just go cold turkey and use xanax only?

The benzo is not going to

The benzo is not going to make you physically feel better more emotionally. Most people going through withdrawals get anxious and stressed out so the benzo helps with that and is also a minor tranquilizer so that helps too. You are still going to be going through withdrawals unless you taper. I would go down 10mg of oxycodone every day. I would not stop cold turkey from 160mg....once i got below 40-50mg then i would stop completely and just resort to the benzo but i would still taper down more before stopping the opiate because i know the withdrawal would be severe enough to make me relapse from 160mg cold turkey.

Also as far as taking them together yes it is not the most safe mixture but you are relatively tolerant to the opiates and are going down steadily so i would not concern myself with that as you would of already had a problem if you were going to. I would not taper the xanax at all though untill you were completely off the oxycodone.

hey

Hey oxyman tough situation i know what it feels like and I want to wish you the best of luck. Through personal experience benzos do help but defently dont cut out the withdrawls and the insomnia. The worst thing you could do is go cold turkey!

Regards, jpd.

Yeah ive tried the cold

Yeah ive tried the cold turkey method and it was horrible. I am just thinking of the damage im doing to myself using both drugs. I guess I will just slowly continuing tapering off of the oxycontin and continue with the xanax. thanks for the responsesI know I cant fight this addicition overnight. its so easy to start using higher dosages and so hard to lower them. I have two herniated back discs thats why I was on so much oxycontin 3 80's a day. I am sick of being addicted I wanted off but I learned the hard way cold turkey was not going to work. Like I said I went 4 days cold turkey and I never felt worse. night sweats , insomnia, diarhea, depression. Thats why i called the pharmacist and he told me to go back on the oxys and slowly taper down. thanks for the responses.

The fact that you were

The fact that you were already off of them for 4 days changes the whole thing. For me the worst of it is over by the 5th day. Since you started back on it you have to go through the process all over again. If you just waited an extra day it would have started getting better or you could have taken a minimal dose just to ease the withdrawals. You shouldn't have stopped for four days then went up to 160mg again. Either way your back on them now so taper down.

well what i did was get

well what i did was get  script of 30mg roxicodone the actavis/amides. After 4 days of hell I did just one of the 30 mg roxicodones and I felt like a million bucks next thing you know I relapsed and the dosages started getting bigger and bigger. I planned on just tapering down with the 30's one or two a day but I couldnt control myself and started using roughly 5 tabs a day. It was definately my fault. The good news is im serious about quiting and know what the withdrawal syptoms are like that was my first time experiencing anything like that. I felt like I was dying or had a bad flu. I now know you must taper off these kind of meds even the xanax I will eventually have to taper off. this has been a bad ride. Im in pain due to back problems but I cant stand to feel addicited to anything. I am upset at myself and my poor lack of control and addicitve personality. life seems better when im on the oxys but like I said I have to get off of them sometime and that time is now! I want to get off this without any other drugs than xanax. I dont like the idea of taking methadone. anybody think suboxin would work? I know people who said it worked but all of them ended up relapsing eventually. back pain is awful it really ruined my life.

give pills to someone else

Do you have someone that you trust enough to give them the pills and let them give them to you as needed and also to give you less each day.  It is going to be REAL HARD to taper when you have easy access to the oxys. Opiate WD is the worst thing I have ever been through.  Methadone 120mg every morn. for 6 yrs cold turkey.

Chronic pain in a patient

Chronic pain in a patient with addiction is a tough problem to treat.  I have had pretty good luck with methadone, but nothing is ideal.  Suboxone will stop withdrawal symptoms within a few hours.  It is an effective medication for pain management or addiction, but I have not seen exceptional results in addicted chronic pain patients using Suboxone for pain management.  It is difficult to sort out failure of suboxone due to it's lack of a euphoric effect or due to it's lack of an effect on pain in addicted chronic pain patients.

not much body damage

you are doing little, if none at all, damage to yourself physiacally by taking the amount of both that you are taking. They are both pure in the manner that there is to acetometophin in them.  As everyone is saying taper down to zero mg and only then taper down on the xanax.
