Hello all, just wondering if anyone has had any experience with a spinal fusion in the lower back. Has anyone had this procedure done and what are your thoughts about its success/failure to remedy your lower back pain? Thanks, any insight would be helpful.
I have done a ton of reading too, just looking for some first-hand accounts. Thanks for the reply.
Most surgeons I refer to will not do spinal surgery for pain alone. They recommend surgery only if there is progressive neurologic damage, or to prevent neurologic damage from becoming permenant. What back problem do you have that warrants surgery?
This comes straight from the diagnosis report I recieved...
Spondylolisthesis and bilateral spondylolyses and L4 - 5 and L5 - S1.
L4 - 5 disc herniation.
I have done facet blocks and epidurals for over a year now and I not looking to be on pain medication for the rest of my life. I am confident that the procedure will go well. Thanks.
...I've had two family members go through with this procedure in different parts of the spine. Neither has much good to say about it. I personally would not unless I had a ruptured disc and there were no other alternatives. Bone grinding on bone, especially spinal bone must be harsh, but I haven't heard great things about the procedure. One member of my family had it in the neck and can't move her head around as much as before; the other family member who's had it needed it without question, but these procedures do limit mobility if I'm to be understood correctly from what they've had to say.
Now a kyphoplasty, I sure as heck wish that I could have that now. The first surgeons I saw said I couldn't have any surgery, but I had no insurance and years later I come to find that I probably could've had my wedge compression filled in with that goop they use for reconstructing your spine. I do know that you still suffer pain after the procedure, just less than without it.
I've had two epidurals, and they work temporarily like a charm. They don't get rid of pain but do help reduce it. Don't they work well with you?
One member, the one who didn't get the spinal fusion in his neck but instead the lower back, he still takes high doses of pain meds. You may be in for the pain med ride for life. It sort of sucks, trust me, I don't like it either; but things could be worse...right? You could be paralyzed.
i have three fusions from t10 to l5 and have rods and screws from that distance as well. at first the docs only fused t10-11 and i continued to have numbness and paralysis in my left leg and once i was worked on for the second time within six months i was walking and mostly have normal movement and sensation but pain has always been an issue
Fusion was done and was a success thus far. The pain I had prior is gone and what is there now is pain from the incision, procedure, and hardware put in. So far so good.
I am pleased and sorry to hear other's didn't go so well. Gotta stay positive.
Where did you get your procedure done?
New York University Medical Center with Dr. Thomas Errico in New York City.
Yours was a fusion?
Yes it was, a one level fusion. He used two rods, screws, and a cage with bone inserted between the two vertebrate.
Follow up with the doctor Sept. 25th and saw his nurse today for a check on the incisions. All is well and quite pleased thus far. So happy I am on a bright road to recovery, pain free (pre-op pain that is) except for incisional/pressure on muscles, and on the road to be med-free!!!
The last being most important to me and my number one goal.

I had the same exact question. I have gotten a ton of information from the internet. Good luck man.
