Overactive reflexes are one of the neurologic signs that nerve impulses are not being transmitted correctly through the periferal nerves and spinal cord to the brain. Asymetry in the reflex may imply that their is a problem on one side only. Overactive reflexes usually mean that there is a lack of inhibitory impluses coming from the brain. This can be because of a brain problem, or because the impulses are only getting as far as the spinal cord because of an injury to the spinal cord at a higher level.
